Tebow rant against CA bill allowing NCAA athletes to profit off of likeness

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on September 13th, 2019 at 2:24 PM

This has been making the rounds on the internet today.

My favorite quote from this

When I was at the University of Florida, I think my jersey was one of the top selling jerseys around the world. It was like Kobe, LeBron and I was right behind them and I didn't make a dollar from it. But nor did I want to. I knew going into college what it was all about.

That's a great story, Tim.

What about those college athletes whose parents didn't own a 44-acre farm

Hey kids like Tebow don’t have to make money off their image if they choose not to, but why should their beliefs be considered above those that wish to capitalize?  I thought this was America.  Limiting compensation is beneficial to whom?  These football games are 3 hour infomercials for universities.

Man, this is the one topic I totally disagree with Mgoblog. You all hate Tebow. It’s hard to understand; there’s really nothing not to like about this guy. He’s at least a good person as well as not a rival.

How valuable is a college player’s likeness anyways? There probably aren’t even 10 total players in college football I could name who don’t play for Michigan. College football players, unless they’re exceptionally great, are only valuable to local fan bases. So if a player goes to a school with a large and affluent fanbase such as ours how is that fair that they are immediately more valuable than a player at another school?

Yeah, they are valuable to local fanbases. Unfortunately, they’re not able to maximize their value without losing eligibility. If a player at university of Toledo can do ads off a local car dealership, why shouldn’t he be able do? If he can get an extra $3-5,000 in college, awesome. More power to him. After he’s gone from college, he’s probably not making it in the NFL and after he’s done playing at a MAC school, he probably isn’t going to be making money. And lost some money he was, IMO, entitled to if someone was willing to pay.

How is it fair that better players are worth more? Ask any person in any any industry. Typically, the better people at their jobs are paid better. Theoretically, that’s how it works under capitalism.

Just because you’re at a bigger school doesn’t mean you’re better though. A career scout team player at Michigan would be bringing in more than a star at Toledo without a doubt. Which I think would eventually result in a virtual free agency for G5 and not as wealthy Power 5 schools, especially if the one time free transfer is instituted as well.

Why would a scout team player make more? We’re talking about the Olympic model. A star at Toledo would certainly make more than a scout team player at Michigan. Because the guy at Toledo plays and is recognizable around Toledo. Nobody is going to seek out John Doe on the scout team because he’s not going to raise the profile of the business and no one is going to come pay for autographs from him.

Tebow is rightfully getting blasted on Twitter by athletes who did not grow up so fortunate. Can this guy's 15 minutes of fame be over already.

Listen to this rant, and then imagine it’s a full-throated support for Mark Emmert’s $500k raises, Pep Hamiltons of the world making over $1million salaries, and paper pushers in AD’s offices driving BMWs.

You like a system that doesn’t pay the athletic performers more than a scholarship, fine. But don’t expect me to laud your faux-noble, rah rah, damn Millenials-rant unless you’re also ranting in favor of the above.

As a college student privileged enough to have parents who ensure I won't have student debt when I graduate, I have immeasurable respect for kids who go into college without that level of security, athletes or otherwise. Scholarships are nice, but free education doesn't put food on the table and you don't have the luxury of waiting four years before you have to eat again.

This isn't an issue of playing for a team instead of yourself or for preventing imbalance in college football (it is already imbalanced beyond help). This is an issue of being fairly compensated for the labor you provide. The benefit they give to the university far outweighs the benefit the university gives to them. They're the reason we watch the games and spend our money. The money deserves to go to them

Tebow gets it. I wonder if many UM fans really understand what they are advocating for going forward. A semi pro operation that will eliminate many non revenue sports and create greater and massive booster influence.

A system that won't be as popular and will become some sort of official minor league. Think of AAA baseball where it will lose many fans. Be careful what you wish for because the law of unintended consequences will apply.

How about this answer. Pretty simple. For all you advocates of playing players and promoting fair capitalistic opportunities, support a minor league for football and give the players a choice. That seems reasonable right?

I find the discussion on jersey sales to be particularly funny.  The NFL players make little to nothing off such sales and when the day comes that college players can make money off their likeness, I suspect they will continue to make nothing off jersey sales.
