Odd that there's one on offense and three on defense. Assume there was a three-way tie on D or close to it? As for Devin, he's the undisputed starting quarterback, he's a defacto leader on the team, captain or not. Nice to see some of the other guys get some official recognition.

Apparently James Whitley isn't on the wall of captains in Schembechler anymore? But he is still listed as a captain on the Bentley site.

2000 was the first time Michigan had 4 captains but I guess Whitley isn't considered a captain anymore. I know what happened but I didn't know they pulled his photo.

To be 'surpirsed' a certain player is not a captain, you would have to know something about the selection criteria and process. Without that knowledge, there is nothing to base a 'surprise' on.

Wonder if Devin yielded to Cam Gordon this year being that they were old HS teamates and all knowing this is his team in 2014.

Probably not....just taking a shot in the dark.

This team definitely doesn't have a leadership problem!

All 4 guys are guys who have endured adveristy and made sacrifices for the team:

Lewan - turned down a 1st round draft spot to win a big ten championship.

Gordon - multiple position switches, relegated to back up, then comes in after Ryan goes down, and works his tail off to get on the field.

Avery - displaced by underclassmen, and now position switching after Thomas came in as a freshman to move him out of nickle.

Ryan - Torn ACL, but doesn't get discouraged and does everything he can to get back on the field, plus I'm guessing he's been quite motivating.

And that's just the stuff we know about. Either way, when dealing with the quality men we have on our team, there were probably no wrong choices.

Congratulations to all four of these players for their opportunity to be leaders of Team 134. As someone mentioned above, when it comes to captains and electing them, this team has some nice problems with many excellent choices.

big and bad this year. he's going to surprise us, he finally looks like a LB'we. I never though much of him but he reminds of many former senior LBs who surprized us, the opposite of Obi Ezehs career.

Why can't those of you that fall into either of those two questions just be happy for the guys that DID get selected by their peers and keep it at that?

Should have been Lewan and Q-Wash and that's it. Don't get the picks for Avery, Cam Gordon(!?!?), and Ryan. Ryan's good but he'll be here next year. Also, four is too many.

It seems fitting of George Jewett's great, great, great grandson (?) to make team captain. And I suspect Courtney will make many crucial interceptions, like in the 2011 Michigan-Ohio State game.

Congrats to all four captains.

Have talked to him personally on several occasions and there couldn't be a better representative of the University and the team.

Happy for all four guys, but elated even more for Courtney.
