Tea Leaves: Pep on the way out. McElwain sticking around
McElwain is out on the recruiting trail and Pep is not. Looks like McElwain is staying around. This could be flawed logic because Drevno was on the recruiting trail quite a bit last year before he was gone. If this is the case though, is this really the answer? Maybe it’s recency bias because his stint at Florida was a disaster. He was the guy before Nussmeier at Bama, and Nussmeier was the last straw of the vanilla offense at Bama. Personally, I don’t think McElwain is the best answer for our offense. Interested to hear others thoughts

Now offer Jeff Brohm a massive pay raise to be our OC!

I would love to see this, but it happening/ and actually working out, would be on par with winning the power ball two times in a row.
You can only beat talent with scheme, and until we can recruit talent like Alabama and Ohio State, we can't afford to remain oblivious to the weaknesses shown by our upcoming opponents and ignore what has worked against them.
I have faith that Don Brown won't get embarrassed next year against Ohio State.(ex: 2017 PSU vs 2018 PSU). However, I really believe that we need to scheme on offense to confuse the more talented teams rather than relying on "Stick to this YEAR'S" game plan. (ex: 2017 OSU vs. 2018 osu).
Each game should have it's own scheme based on the weaknesses shown by the opponents previous games... along with a Severe SELF scouting report, from a hired analytical team, of your own tendencies on Defense as well as offense in order to give the best chance of winning every single game.

Since when was Pep ever a guy who hit the recruiting trail hard?
As for McElwain WR recruiting has taken a huge dip since he came onboard. Literally no size on any of the commits we've gotten.
December 1st, 2018 at 1:35 PM ^
Figuratively is the word you would use to describe your deficient take on the size of the WR recruits. Literally is the word I use to describe your mental state, as in, “Diagonal was literally born without a brain.”
December 1st, 2018 at 2:16 PM ^
That's a dead horse now, rockydude. Even the major dictionaries have added a definition for 'literally' to mean place an emphasis on something. You are an anachronism, rockydude; join us or literally perish in the annals of history...
December 1st, 2018 at 2:20 PM ^
Still makes you sound dumb.
December 1st, 2018 at 3:24 PM ^
Literally, figuratively, and for all intensive purposes.
December 1st, 2018 at 4:20 PM ^
"all intensive purposes" I seen what you did there, I seen it.
December 1st, 2018 at 9:14 PM ^
You made a joke cause it was funny...
December 1st, 2018 at 2:22 PM ^
He has put his new account aside for now. Back to D-Blue.
December 1st, 2018 at 1:36 PM ^
There's a clear emphasis on recruiting speedy slots since he arrived. Obviously there's a change in offensive philosophy, but we don't know if McElwain is behind it. True he hasn't reeled in one of the top tall targets and he's not a great recruiter. But we're not taking plan C guys that fit the mold like in the past.
December 1st, 2018 at 1:53 PM ^
I don't understand why you wouldn't want to keep filling your roster at WR with guys like Black, DPJ, and Collins. What happens when those guys all leave next year? Bell and Kent had no other power 5 offers and are both barely 6 feet. George Johnson is just as small and almost ranked in the 1000's. At least Giles Jackson appears to be a good get.
I can't sit here and pretend rankings don't matter after watching guys like Gil and Watson get cooked by OSU.
December 1st, 2018 at 1:57 PM ^
Bell has turned out to be pretty good. There are players all over college football who don't get offer lists who are pretty good.
OSU has a defense loaded with 4/5 stars and they have gotten roasted several times this year.
December 1st, 2018 at 2:02 PM ^
And yet OSU is still 11-1 playing for another B1G championship after kicking our ass once again. I'm sure it has nothing to do with their seven consecutive #1 recruiting classes in the B1G though.
December 1st, 2018 at 2:12 PM ^
MSU won 3 three Big Ten titles with mostly three star recruits. Apparently you don't need top 3 classes to win conference titles.
December 1st, 2018 at 2:25 PM ^
steriods are a hell of a drug...
December 1st, 2018 at 4:37 PM ^
And so are anomalies
December 1st, 2018 at 2:35 PM ^
Ah yes MSU, they shared a big ten title in a year they didn't have to play OSU and there was no conference championship game, then won another in a year they led UM and OSU for zero combined seconds of actual game time along with winning 1 score games against Purdue and Rutgers and losing to Nebraska, then getting molly whopped by Bama. Since then their program has fallen off a cliff going 20-17 in the last 3 seasons. Great model for Michigan football to follow.
December 1st, 2018 at 3:28 PM ^
What did poor Molly do to deserve a whopping by Bama?
December 1st, 2018 at 4:13 PM ^
I think the point is people who think the only way to beat OSU is more talent are wrong. MSU flat out beat the hell out of OSU in 2013. Yet somehow we can't.
December 1st, 2018 at 2:43 PM ^
In Kent’s defense he’s severely underrated
December 1st, 2018 at 4:21 PM ^
No he's not. Bill Greene has seen him live more than anyone and said he's now properly rated.
December 1st, 2018 at 5:01 PM ^
Bill Greene can suck a dick. I’ll stick with the judgement coming from a tight circle of high school coaches that are consistently in the state championship and have seen kids at that level for 10+ years
December 1st, 2018 at 4:07 PM ^
We definitely need an outside WR in this class. That position is empty the last few classes.
December 1st, 2018 at 6:44 PM ^
Huh? The 2017 class had DPJ, Black, and Collins. How is that "empty?"
December 1st, 2018 at 1:37 PM ^
I’d rather see some 6”0 speedy slot types, we have exactly zero of those on the roster, ambry Thomas should be playing slot
December 1st, 2018 at 1:39 PM ^
So Ronnie Bell, Oliver Martin, and Quintel Kent?
December 1st, 2018 at 1:53 PM ^
Exactly, and none of those guys are starting over Collins, Black and DPJ.
December 1st, 2018 at 1:59 PM ^
Bell is a true freshman, Martin a RS freshman(who was a 4 star), and Kent isn't even on the team yet. Conversely, Collins and DPJ are both true sophomores.
December 1st, 2018 at 2:04 PM ^
Ok, and?
December 1st, 2018 at 2:14 PM ^
Seriously?
December 1st, 2018 at 3:25 PM ^
I know Harbaugh just raves about Ronnie Bell, but really
Ronnie Bell. He has no business being out there. There has been a serious WR recruiting deficiency that has led Michigan to where it is with WR depth. They have Nico and PJ. Black has been hurt for 2 years. After that...nothing, a big black hole. True freshman 0 * recruit Ronnie Bell should not have seen the field this year.
Ronnie, if you're reading this. I'm a big fan and hope you have a great career at Michigan. I just wish there were a few 4* or 5* senior WR on the team that were getting PT ahead of you this year. If you turn out to be a true diamond in the rough, I will be ecstatic.
December 1st, 2018 at 5:24 PM ^
Is that your hot take? Seriously? I think Bell has shown more already than any thought he would. Dude gets yards after the catch and has a nose for the end zone but because he wasn’t a four or five star that doesn’t matter...
December 1st, 2018 at 2:42 PM ^
Yes. My fear with the WRs is that 2/3 of Collins,DPJ, Black leave early (after next year) and UM would be left without much size at that position.
December 1st, 2018 at 5:48 PM ^
Those guys r not speedy slots, they r slots, I was thinking more like kJ hamler type
December 1st, 2018 at 1:38 PM ^
Pep has been decent about recruiting. He's very good in developing relationships with his targets and has been one of the main recruiters in state. That being said his offense is very vanilla so I hope Harbaugh gets someone who can design more explosive plays and can get our playmakers in space
As for WR recruiting, Michigan is trying to get more speed. But the lack of size on new WRs may be due to recruiting 3 tall WRs in 2017.
December 1st, 2018 at 2:19 PM ^
Pep did a decent job a couple years ago, but he hasn't done much lately with recruiting. He secured Cade McNamara's commitment in March, but otherwise hasn't landed anyone since 2017.
December 1st, 2018 at 4:01 PM ^
The offensive philosophy is Harbaugh's so when calling it vanilla ascribe it to him not his assistants. I don't care how much input they have or how he says its a committee, he has basically run this offense since Stanford.
December 1st, 2018 at 4:14 PM ^
Somewhat true, but the passing game was much more interesting at the end of 2015 with Rudock than it has been with Pep.
December 1st, 2018 at 2:18 PM ^
Ah, Maizen season has finally arrived!
December 1st, 2018 at 2:32 PM ^
It's gonna be a long, cold winter. But at least he can't shit on the basketball team?
December 1st, 2018 at 3:04 PM ^
You left out cruel. And yes, yes he could shit on the basketball team!
December 1st, 2018 at 2:29 PM ^
Maybe this is because elite recruits look on our depth chart and see DPJ, Nico Collins, and Tarik Black.
December 4th, 2018 at 2:04 AM ^
If a kid is truly elite he won’t be scared off by being the back up for a year. If he is a day one starter all he has to do is beat one of these guys out. Odds are he isn’t as good as he thinks he is...
Tarik is great but he has been healthy for about 8/26 games he has been here. A FR would have had 8 games to show out this year.
You don’t see elite programs who aren’t stacking blue chips like cord wood.
December 1st, 2018 at 1:22 PM ^
Forgot to put this but I assume the only way McElwain is staying is he will be promoted to OC
December 1st, 2018 at 2:24 PM ^
It wouldn't be totally surprising to see McElwain become OC and Roundtree become the WR coach. Not as much of a splash as many would want, but I can see it happening. With that said, McElwain needs to start recruiting worth a damn if he wants to stay.
December 1st, 2018 at 1:25 PM ^
I prefer for McElwain to stay but only if that does NOT include promotion. He did yeoman's work as WR coach with DPJ and Collins this year. And Oliver and Black (probably) too, though that isn't as obvious for various reasons.
Roy Roundtree could be an excellent JMc replacement, but he's young and less proven. If he's the long term plan, another year as protege would be comforting.
December 1st, 2018 at 1:27 PM ^
Good to great coordinator....good To great G5 coach mediocre P5 coach...not a dig but where has Hamilton been overly successful? Andrew lucks coattails...didn’t work out in Indy. That being said the offense wasn’t terrible just very conservative...still searching for 62 answers on the other side have not had one logical explanation that makes a lick of sense. Almost like they had our playbook
December 1st, 2018 at 1:37 PM ^
I’m not saying Pep is good. He’s awful in my opinion, but not convinced McElwain is better
December 1st, 2018 at 1:40 PM ^
I hear ya, but taking out the head coaching fiasco at Florida I think McElwains resume is actually very good and he was an ascending coach, before then he was national coach of the year at CSU, I think that is great experience for an OC
