Tea Leaves: Pep on the way out. McElwain sticking around

Submitted by Michwolve21 on December 1st, 2018 at 1:18 PM

McElwain is out on the recruiting trail and Pep is not. Looks like McElwain is staying around. This could be flawed logic because Drevno was on the recruiting trail quite a bit last year before he was gone. If this is the case though, is this really the answer? Maybe it’s recency bias because his stint at Florida was a disaster. He was the guy before Nussmeier at Bama, and Nussmeier was the last straw of the vanilla offense at Bama. Personally, I don’t think McElwain is the best answer for our offense. Interested to hear others thoughts

I would love to see this, but it happening/ and actually working out, would be on par with winning the power ball two times in a row.

You can only beat talent with scheme, and until we can recruit talent like Alabama and Ohio State, we can't afford to remain oblivious to the weaknesses shown by our upcoming opponents and ignore what has worked against them.

I have faith that Don Brown won't get embarrassed next year against Ohio State.(ex: 2017 PSU vs 2018 PSU). However, I really believe that we need to scheme on offense to confuse the more talented teams rather than relying on "Stick to this YEAR'S" game plan. (ex: 2017 OSU vs. 2018 osu).

Each game should have it's own scheme based on the weaknesses shown by the opponents previous games... along with a Severe SELF scouting report, from a hired analytical team, of your own tendencies on Defense as well as offense in order to give the best chance of winning every single game.

Since when was Pep ever a guy who hit the recruiting trail hard?

As for McElwain WR recruiting has taken a huge dip since he came onboard. Literally no size on any of the commits we've gotten.

There's a clear emphasis on recruiting speedy slots since he arrived. Obviously there's a change in offensive philosophy, but we don't know if McElwain is behind it. True he hasn't reeled in one of the top tall targets and he's not a great recruiter.  But we're not taking plan C guys that fit the mold like in the past.

I don't understand why you wouldn't want to keep filling your roster at WR with guys like Black, DPJ, and Collins. What happens when those guys all leave next year? Bell and Kent had no other power 5 offers and are both barely 6 feet. George Johnson is just as small and almost ranked in the 1000's. At least Giles Jackson appears to be a good get.

I can't sit here and pretend rankings don't matter after watching guys like Gil and Watson get cooked by OSU.

Ah yes MSU, they shared a big ten title in a year they didn't have to play OSU and there was no conference championship game, then won another in a year they led UM and OSU for zero combined seconds of actual game time along with winning 1 score games against Purdue and Rutgers and losing to Nebraska, then getting molly whopped by Bama. Since then their program has fallen off a cliff going 20-17 in the last 3 seasons. Great model for Michigan football to follow.

I know Harbaugh just raves about Ronnie Bell, but really

Ronnie Bell. He has no business being out there. There has been a serious WR recruiting deficiency that has led Michigan to where it is with WR depth. They have Nico and PJ. Black has been hurt for 2 years. After that...nothing, a big black hole. True freshman 0 * recruit Ronnie Bell should not have seen the field this year.

Ronnie, if you're reading this. I'm a big fan and hope you have a great career at Michigan. I just wish there were a few 4* or 5* senior WR on the team that were getting PT ahead of you this year. If you turn out to be a true diamond in the rough, I will be ecstatic.

Pep has been decent about recruiting. He's very good in developing relationships with his targets and has been one of the main recruiters in state. That being said his offense is very vanilla so I hope Harbaugh gets someone who can design more explosive plays and can get our playmakers in space

As for WR recruiting, Michigan is trying to get more speed. But the lack of size on new WRs may be due to recruiting 3 tall WRs in 2017.

If a kid is truly elite he won’t be scared off by being the back up for a year.  If he is a day one starter all he has to do is beat one of these guys out.  Odds are he isn’t as good as he thinks he is...

Tarik is great but he has been healthy for about 8/26 games he has been here.  A FR would have had 8 games to show out this year.

You don’t see elite programs who aren’t stacking blue chips like cord wood.

It wouldn't be totally surprising to see McElwain become OC and Roundtree become the WR coach. Not as much of a splash as many would want, but I can see it happening. With that said, McElwain needs to start recruiting worth a damn if he wants to stay.

I prefer for McElwain to stay but only if that does NOT include promotion. He did yeoman's work as WR coach with DPJ and Collins this year. And Oliver and Black (probably) too, though that isn't as obvious for various reasons.

Roy Roundtree could be an excellent JMc replacement, but he's young and less proven. If he's the long term plan, another year as protege would be comforting.

Good to great coordinator....good To great G5 coach mediocre P5 coach...not a dig but where has Hamilton been overly successful? Andrew lucks coattails...didn’t work out in Indy.  That being said the offense wasn’t terrible just very conservative...still searching for 62 answers on the other side have not had one logical explanation that makes a lick of sense. Almost like they had our playbook

I hear ya, but taking out the head coaching fiasco at Florida I think McElwains resume is actually very good and he was an ascending coach, before then he was national coach of the year at CSU, I think that is great experience for an OC
