Taylor Lewan signs the largest OL contract in NFL history

Submitted by aaamichfan on

5 years, $80M with $50M guaranteed.

Congrats to this fantastic Michigan Man, who really seems loved by one of the fastest growing cities in America!

Frank Clark is a good Michigan man, and a great family man. Has kept his nose completely clean since going to the NFL.

The guy was homeless as a child and didn't have the greatest upbringing. Sometimes it takes that type if person longer to mature.

I was as emotionally invested in those Hoke teams as anyone on this board. I remember chuckling at those shenanigans like the pet pig and moustache tattoo. I also know TL is a hell of a player and is worth every penny if the Titans want to accomplish anything in the coming yyears.Aafterwatching his interview on the NFL top 100 show, I combine that with all the other anecdotes I've heard to come to the conclusion that I would not want to hang out or be around Lewan.

Yeah, going to veto the "fantastic Michigan Man" part.  Threatening victims of sexual assault is not ok.

I will say I watched a few Titans games last year and he is one of the few LT's in the NFL that really stand out - I found myself watching him instead of the ball on a lot of plays.  Incredible lateral movement and quickness for a 6' 8" 300lb+ guy, but then again that's probably why he's the highest paid player at the position.

I had thought that the Patriots gave Nate Solder a pretty substantial contract back in March, but clearly this beats that in terms of its, well, terms. It seems like there's a bit of a race to the huge contract at just about every position now.

Congratulations to Taylor Lewan on getting paid though.

You guys are weird. So it's ok to say f*** Lewan and f*** Frank Clark but if someone here says they are disappointed in a 2 star's commitment with an uninspiring highlight tape then the whole "he and his family are reading this blog and you are shitting all over him!" mob comes out and tells how terrible of a person you are for having that opinion.

You honestly think I was implying there is no difference between such things? What is wrong with you?

My point is this is a sports blog and sports opinions are commonly berated here unless they are unrealistically optimistic rather they come with valid points or not.

I know allegations of Lewan and Clark but none of us know the whole truths and we never will either. I know they have made bad mistakes and decisions in their lives. I also know none of us have been in their shoes. We all make regrettable life choices. We all hope to become better men/women from who we were in our young college days.

But here you are on your high horse crucifying Michigan men like you are some sort of pious king of judgement. Think about this, you are on Michigan blog saying fuck former Michigan players based on hearsay you will never truly know that occurred a decade ago. You went full sparty...never go full sparty.

The whole "Michigan Man" trope is so fucking tired. There's pieces of shit in every large group of people. The Michigan alumni base is absolutely massive. Going to Michigan doesn't make you a good person, it doesn't make you a better person, it's just a really good state school.

The way to NOT be like MSU is not to slavishly defend every ex-football player, but to hold the accountable for their actions.

I don’t know, man. Going “full Sparty” seems more like finding an excuse to condone every inappropriate/illegal thing whenever any Spartan is accused. Glad I can be a part of a blog where people aren’t afraid to hold their own accountable for their actions. Even if we don’t know the whole story, sometimes you only need to know part of it in order to make a pretty good judgment.

You have to remember, the type of people who engage in virtue signaling on the internet are generally very unsuccessful in their real lives. They see people like Lewan and Clark having great success from hard work and are deathly jealous.

You have to remember, the people who gargle the the nuts of people who abuse women are probably abusers or at least sympathetic to it. They see people raising issues with praising men who abuse women and feel threatened themselves.

Triple-A,

As a general rule, across the entire internet, your comment is probably true.

Personally, I'm C level at my IT firm and I'm a survivor of assault myself.

But, you're right, I AM a bit jealous.  I got in a bar fight in college that took me years and tens of thousands of dollars to expunge, so anytime I see someone get a pass, especially when a woman is involved, it grinds my gears.

However, Larry Appleton just convinced me to let this situation go by reminding me of who it's like to be young and have a close friend.  In that context it's a bit easier to let this stuff go, and I'm happy about that because it's more fun to root for someone.

That doesn't mean I would ever be surprised by someone else having a hard time letting this go.

I think we can root for someone and rejoice in their success, while at the same time not wanting to deal with all the triggers.

It is very silly, the practice of wanting to extend justice over a message board.

I certainly see where you're coming from, and congratulate you on your success!

I just think it's time collectively as a society to begin pushing back on the internet lynch-mob. We have a justice system for very good reason, and with all the data at their disposal it is applied much more fairly nowadays than it ever has been.

Unpopular opinion..I agree.  There are certain players that as soon as their name is brought up, the self-righteous indignation of the Michigan fan base comes out. "Guy gets huge contract"...response is "so what, he's a prick because he did a thing in college." Ultimately, I don't understand why anyone on this board...most of whom i assume are older, with jobs, lives etc, feel the need to hold a grudge, or constantly point out mistakes past players made. It's almost as if some people feel better about themselves because they can say "well "Ped U fans stood by Joepa and MSU brass knew and did nothing..but I'm better than those fans because I will not let the internet forget what that 22 year old did that day."

You're right.  That's totally unhealthy behavior.

I will add that football players are inherent psychological triggers that are meant to be freely consumed by the public (most often in a good way).  This means that some of what you just described can be difficult to avoid.

I think the swift response was triggered by one phrase: "fantastic Michigan Man." Were that phrase excluded, I believe the response on the board would have been different (though some may still have brought up this past). I think many on here hold up the phrase Michigan Man as something to aspire to, and find his actions fall short of their ideals.

There's so many potential #NoPoliticsOnThisBoard...Redacted# responses that I could throw out here. Suffice it to say that a decision made by the judicial system does not now nor will it ever render a person completely innocent. People commit crimes all the time that they don't ultimately get charged for. Doesn't mean they aren't guilty, it means that fault can't be proven. Obvious is obvious but that is a subtle, but real distinction.

As for the internet lynch-mob, I'd say that while this blog is popular among a small cohort, this is a very small sliver of the interweb. I don't see lots of outlets mobbing this Taylor Lewan story. You're talking about a set of highly invested, keyed up Michigan fans who want to protect the name of their school (I did not attend, full disclosure). I see no problem with holding even a young man to account for actions he chose to take in haste.

You make choices and you live with them.
