I predict this isn't going to end well.  I'll let others do the negging.

(edit)

Actually, on further review, the topic was covered in a vaguely titled thread earlier today.  Might've made it harder to find and hence this new thread. Still, knowing MgoBoarders, good luck.

It's not the last piece...they had both the Caleb Love and Papa Kante scholarships.

They still have another spot to fill after this.

It was also talked about quite a bit, yesterday. Not sure he's better than Williams, who, IMO...is not a starter (but with Love gone, is now looking at a starting role at the moment).

  1. McDaniel
  2. Burnett
  3. Williams / Perez
  4. Nkamhoua
  5. Reed

  1. Llewellyn (who could also start over Williams/Perez if you want to go small)
  2. Howard
  3. Khayat
  4. Williams / Perez (he's not a 4, but for the sake of splitting with the starter spot)
  5. Jackson

  • Tschetter
  • Washington

...that leaves one more spot. Michigan needs a starting wing. Both Williams and Perez can come off the bench and push Khayat or Howard down with Tschetter and Washington. The problem that won't be solved this late? That starting wing has to be the best player on the team.

For example, add THJ or Franz or a healthy upperclassmen Caris Levert or Charles Matthews to that starting lineup, that's a solid team! Hell, even Chaundee Brown would be a HUGE addition to that starting lineup.

I much rather have Llwelleyn start at the 2 instead of Burnett. I pray Khayat can play the 3 and have Burnett come off the bench. I think Jackson will be the back up 4 and not the back up 5. If they do get Perez who's very meh and might be ok with limited use, I would rather him back up 2/3 than actually start.

They need a true back up big, because Jackson was awful playing the 5 at Seton Hall, so I think he's best backing up the 4.

Burnett can't do much on offense except slash and pass a little bit, so I rather have him on the wing than be a 2 where he'd have to handle the ball more. I just don't think a guy who couldn't really start at his previous schools or do much on offense will suddenly be a good starter and contribute a lot on offense.

I don't get the hate on Perez or people acting like he is just going to be a scrub.  He was a MAAC player of the year and has spent over a year at WVU practicing against other players in the BIG12.   Is he most likely going to come in a be a superstar no but a guy who gets 12 5 5 is possible and shoot around 35% from 3.   But to suggest he is going to be some average guy is not giving him any credit.   An older experienced 3 position player would be a nice get and he was expected to start at WVU

I don't think he's a scrub or anything. I just don't think he really changes the outlook for the team. I saw someone else said he had a good assist rate which can translate.

He shot 35% on catch and shoot 3s which is average I would say. I'm not sure where he found that stat. He seems to be a poor shooter from 3 overall and a poor shooter from 2. I understand that his efficiency may go up if his usage goes down, but he seems like he's not a good shooter regardless, because unless every 3 he takes pretty much is off the dribble, shooting under 30% multiple seasons is bad.

I know Mike Smith had better numbers from 3 after coming to Michigan, but he was a decent shooter at Colombia before and he took a lot of 3s there. Michigan also had a bunch of shooters to create space, while this roster doesn't have that. I think Perez will be fine, maybe he starts, maybe he's a back up. If he does start, I feel like it's more because we have nothing at 2/3 than because he's that good. Our other options are Burnett, someone who couldn't really start at 2 prior schools, Williams, and Khayat.

I don't think he's a 3 either...but Juwan Howard disagrees with both of us considering he's used him at that position plenty throughout his college career.

Livers was more of a 3 than Williams. Who isn't a starter...which is why my whole point is, this kid Perez provided depth, but this team is missing a STARTER.

He is not a 4.  At least will never play 4 on next year’s roster.

Here are a few items that make me optimistic about him.

25 years old.  Makes us a very old team next season. Full grown man. Stark contrast to last season.

80% free throw percentage.  Generally a good indicator of shooting ability.

35% on catch and shoot threes on decent volume in his last full season.  Poor on off the dribble numbers brings down his overall percentage. Had to take a lot of late shot clock chucks which leads me to…

30% usage rate.  A la Mike Smith he had to do a lot of heavy lifting. Efficiency should go up with less usage.

very good assist rate.  He is an excellent passer.  Probably his best skill. He and Nkamhoua are both elite passers and will play off each other very well.

All in all, he raises the floor dramatically.  Another option at the 2/3 and we really need one of Perez, JL, or YoYo to be at least big 10 replacement level.  We need a secondary creator and another scorer.  He may not be a shooter but he is a scorer.
