Not sure if the embed is working, will try to copy and paste here as well:
NEWS: Michigan’s Dusty May is hiring Saint Mary’s Associate HC Justin Joyner as an assistant coach, sources tell
. Joyner has helped Saint Mary’s to two conference tournament titles and two regular season championships. Reeled in Gaels’ star Aidan Mahaney and other Top150 recruits in Jordan Ross, Mikey Lewis and Zion Sensley.

EDIT: Interesting... so the new "Media" button is an easier and better way to post/embed tweets. Nice little upgrade. Not sure how long that's been on the board, I'm just noticing it now.
Gonna be interesting to see how much this staff dives into international recruiting. Michigan has historically recruited internationally pretty well under Beilein and Howard, May seems to be into recruiting globally, then bringing in the Associate HC from St Mary's, which historically has really emphasized international recruiting, seems like a recipe for May looking to maximize bringing in talent from outside the US. This could definitely end up being a worthwhile strategy given that top end international talent seems to be catching up with or surpassing US talent (look at the NBA lottery picks this year and last few seasons) and you also don't really have to worry about NIL with them
Good point. Also, confirming thoughts from a St. Mary's connected media member:
That embedded tweet is laying it on a bit thick to say anyone reeled in Mahaney, who played high school ball at Campolindo, one hill and less than a mile and half from St. Mary's campus, and had personal reasons to stay in Lamorinda. His brother reeled him in, if anything.
I guess you could give Howard credit for holding onto Franz.
Howard was active internationally in additional to Franz. YoYo Khayat, Lee Aaliya, and we also almost got Australian Johnny Furphy who ended up at Kansas. Could also technically throw in Papa Kante, Caleb Houstan, and Moussa Diabate
And that was part of the problem. Diabate and Houstan couldn't get NIL. I worry some guys will come here and leave for the NBA early or go to Kentucky where they can pull whatever they did to get NIL for Tshiebwe. I know Diabate had an NBA body so was likely to go early anyway, but I feel like any international guy on the fence about going to the draft is gonna go if they aren't getting NIL. But May held on to guys at FAU who surely could have made more at other schools, so who knows.
Kentucky got NIL to Tshiebwe when they went to the Bahamas to play, where no laws prevent him from getting paid.
Everyday, I’m more impressed by May. He is the man with a plan.
The man with a plan.
Seems like the main thing with the 3 assistants is they're all great recruiters.
Additional info from Henschke
So, for those scoring at home (or even if you're by yourself), Michigan has five open "assistant" positions. Only three, however, are allowed to go on the road and recruit.
Boynton, Miskedeen and now Joyner appear to be those three. WIth FAU assistant Kyle Church and (maybe/probably not now) Rod Clark or KT Harrell coming along as well. Harrell potentially not as an assistant but basketball operations.
Are basketball assistant roles well defined (e.g. football assistants)?
I'm the Associate Head Coach for Chipotle Fetching, if that answers your question.
Associate (of the) Head Coach for Chipotle Fetching.
It's a relatively new rule. The NCAA expanded Men's and Women's coaching staffs to 5 from 3 (plus a Director of Basketball Operations and GAs/Analysts) before last season in July of 23.
Basically you have your three "bench" assistants who are your main assistants (Last year's Saddi, Eisley and Martelli), they're able to coach, recruit and travel, and you still can have a Director of Basketball Operations (Chris Hunter) plus GAs and Analysts. Only now you can also have two additional "basketball" coaches. They can be directly involved in skill instruction, game planning, scouting, and on-campus recruiting.
I don't think Juwan used his two additional coaching positions last year. I could be wrong on this.
I'm still just curious how many "coaches" a basketball team really needs. Obviously recruiting may require a large staff simply to keep up with all the options and vicissitudes of the field of players, but as far as actual development & in-game management... what other "roles" are really needed? Football has a number of specialized positions which necessitate dedicated staff, while baseball & hockey have fewer specialized positions (and players). Basketball has even fewer of both.
It looks like 5 coaches are needed as that is what the rules allow.

"Want" vs "need", as with all sports.
Having not known his name before now, I love this hire as I do the other 2. Church as DPP or a 4th assistant would be great.
Church might get the FAU job
As a Moraga dude, and a Michigan Man, I am all about this...

Is anyone else perusing the St. Mary's, Ok. St., and Georgia recruiting classes from '22-'24 on 24/7? These guys can recruit their tails off (who has been at Pepperdine, they are killing recruiting too and lots of players in the portal). I wonder if we will be pursuing any of their former commits or players besides the Ok. St. guys already mentioned.
Joyner recruited Jordan Pope for St. Mary's. Pope just entered the portal from Oregon State and May is in contact with him now. Hopefully, Joyner can help get him here. Pope would be a good get. He balled out for OSU and improved a lot from last year to this.
