Maybe he got a second opinion from another doctor and wants to explore playing time?

It has happened before...  I believe one player left due to medical redshirt and went to go to Texas Tech...  I believe couple of years back...

Not necessarily the reason for St. Juste but could be possible

I get that you're joking with the latter part of your statement, but I wouldn't rule out some form of processing happening here. Not saying there is any evidence, but if we saw this happening at another university, I don't think we'd be quite as quick to rule it out.

I don’t think so. It was doctors at UM telling the kid he should not play as was the same with AP. Don’t thing Harbaugh has any real pull with them. UM doctors actually care about the student athlete and give them sound advice. Now could they find another doctor who says they can still play probably

The simplest explanation is that M's doctors believe he is facing a significant possibility of permanent injury and won't sign off on his participation. That's clearly what happened with Pipkins who was at a position of need at a time when scholarship limits weren't an issue. That doesn't mean he will certainly face severe, permanent injury if he plays, it would mean the risk is more than Michigan is willing to allow. Again, the Pipkins situation is illustrative. He found a school that was willing to allow him to take the risk, he played and he didn't suffer a significant injury of which I'm aware. Different schools have different standards. Competent doctors can have different opinions.

As long as I'm posting, I'd like to wish him well. I always liked him.

IIRC Freddie Canteen medically retired at Michigan because the doctors wouldn't let him play, then went somewhere else to play and got injured seriously again.

Edit: Looks like he suffered another shoulder injury at ND, then transferred to Tulane and unfortunately reinjured it again.

Yes, I wish him well too. You have the perfect take on this all. And he got a degree in hand from U of M, which is half of what he signed up for. That degree and the network that goes with it will serve him well once he is done with football.

I know it's out of fashion, but it's perfectly acceptable for two people or groups of people to have different opinions and neither be wrong.

This is the right take.  Pipkins was able to stay healthy at Texas Tech but he had enough injuries at UM (including at least one scary neck injury) that it was totally reasonable for Michigan to not want him to play football for them again.  Texas Tech thought differently and it worked out for all of them.

The only times my ears really perk up are when a school oversigns guys or have some clear roster issues and all of a sudden a bunch of guys who were lower on the depth chart suddenly can't play.  That doesn't seem to be the case here.  I wish him luck and hope he can find a place to play.

FYI he posted a lengthy graduation instagram 3 days ago which ended with:  "to clarify things on my situation, I NEVER RETIRED FROM PLAYING FOOTBALL, I had no power in the decision..."

sounds like there's some animosity there

Perhaps, but it's also possible that he was responding to published reports that he had agreed to medically retire. The animosity could have been directed there.

In any case, that decision should be left up to the doctors. Not to the player and certainly not to the coaches. If the player doesn't like it, he's free to look around for a different medical opinion, just like St Juste is doing. He's already mentioned that he's interested in CMU if they offer.

Of course he's bitter about being told he can no longer play at UM!  He had two season ending injuries and never got the chance to play because if them.  I'd be bitter, too, if some random doctor decided to end my career before I was ready to end it.

None of that means he has any animosity towards the coaching staff, teammates, or the school.  And I really hope he doesn't.

Not sure why everyone is assuming something nefarious here. Doctors can and should be able to unilaterally bar a player from participating in sports. Sometimes the player doesn't like it or agree with it, but that's kinda by design that they don't get to make the call. It sounds like St Juste is looking around for a school that would clear him, and hopefully he finds that as long as they're not making a football decision instead of a medical one.

A player disagreeing with a medical disqualification is nothing new and it doesn’t always mean they are processing guys out. OSU gave a medical hardship to Jamel Dean right after he enrolled early. He disagreed with their opinion, transferred to Auburn, played, started, became all-conference, ran one of the fastest 40s at the combine, and was selected in the draft. I think he was a 3rd rounder, but I could be wrong. I doubt OSU would allow someone to enroll early and then process the player off the team. That doctor might have some explaining to do, but it’s the doctors call.

Sam McGuffie was medically retired by Michigan due to multiple concussions - 3 during his freshman year. I guess he could not pass the UM tests to get cleared by medical - word was he was really messed up.  He enrolled at Rice where he eventually got cleared to play.

This could be Ben's issue.  UM has a very strict neurological test program for multiple concussion injuries.

McGuffie left because he was homesick.   And UM is the only school with a strict concussion process with all the attention on football and head injuries.  This kid was processed out to open up room for another scholarship because he wasn’t going to play for UM,  and BSJ will be cleared to play for another team.

If you’re a starter like Newsome then you are kept around. If you won’t ever play then you are medically retired immediately to open room for a scholarship.

That too ... he did not want to stay in A2 just to be a regular student.  Took a year off and then got cleared by Rice.  Eventually switched to WR to reduce the further risk of head injury.

I realize this isn't the point, but I find the details and the questions raised by this fascinating. Does he lose his medical scholarship by being in the portal or does that fact that it is medical mean he can look around without the risk of losing it?  Since he is a medical, does he have to still sit out a year?  UM is essentially saying he can no longer play, I would think he could/should be immediately eligible at another school, assuming the doctors clear him.  What kind of interview at other schools will he have? How extensive is the medical testing before offering him another scholarship?
