So now everyone is scared Harbaugh is leaving? [See edit]

Submitted by OaklandInPlay on January 4th, 2022 at 9:37 PM

12 months ago most of the fan base wanted him gone so don't cry now. Cutting his salary in half was publicly humiliating and will make it a lot easier for him to walk away. How soon Warde forgot what Michigan was in the 7 seasons before the Harbaugh era. In my opinion, he gone.

Username checks out.

It is what it is regarding the reduced salary.  He  failed to accomplish any of the goals we'd have to assume were communicated to him when he was hired.  He finally beat OSU and achieved a conference title only after the school essentially put his feet to the fire. It shouldn't have ever comw down to that.

Well, he is due for a pay raise one way or another.  He does seem very happy here now and Vegas isn't the best place to raise a family.  I'd bet he stays.

I don't think he's leaving BUT he's already at a disadvantage getting kids in academically. If Michigan refuses to do this NIL shit the same way the big boys do he may feel he has maxed out what he can achieve here.

I will start by saying that I did not think even after the 2-4 season that it was the right time to get rid of Harbaugh. I thought that Warde did a smart thing with the new contract.

The team and staff came together and had a great season.

With all of that said, if Coach Harbaugh does not want to be at UM anymore, I am disappointed,  but I am not going to hold a grudge. When he came in we expected a few more seasons like this, and if he were to choose to leave now, it feels like he is leaving a few more seasons like this on the table. But I don't know what he wants in life.

I transferred twice in college and was not an athlete putting in the time that they do. And I have changed jobs multiple times now and make nowhere near what Harbaugh does. So who am I to tell an athlete or coach what to do?

If he does choose to leave, he has left the place far better than he found it. I hope he stays, but if that's not what he wants, thanks for the memories and good luck in the future.

I just read a clickbait article that said expect Bill O'Brien to be a UM target if Jim leaves. Just 30min ago I saw another saying BoB is on the Jags radar.

Something tells me we may have our source ??

First and foremost, he's a career journeyman. If (and that's a huge if) he lights it up at Michigan, he'll ditch us for a Florida or LSU job or the like as soon as he's offered. Furthermore, his offense at Alabama didn't impress this year until the Georgia game and I'm never eager to give credit for Alabama's success to any of their coordinators. Gattis, Hart, McDonald, JayBaugh wouldn't be homerun hires but they at least have a non-zero chance of being a longterm solution (or close to it) as coach, whereas BoB to me offers zero possibility of being around in 5 years, regardless of how good or bad it goes

This is silly anyway because Harbaugh isn't leaving, but if hell freezes over, I don't want BoB trying to thaw us out

None of this is about money.  All of this is about respect.

I agree with the OP but not for the same reasons - this fanbase turned RAPIDLY on one of its program's great heroes after a totally black swan event of a season.  I cannot think of another college football coach that was made to PUBLICLY take less money in the way Harbaugh was.

And we lowered his buyout so now it's less of a penalty if he leaves.  They should have righted this wrong in the middle of the season and offered him a major contract.  Maybe they tried.  Instead we have one of the top three coaches in the country with every reason to be somewhat annoyed if he so chooses.

Hopefully we unfuck this and make him the highest paid coach in the land - he deserves it.

Hold up.  It's one season, and one win over OSU.  He is NOT one of the top three coaches. because of that.

If/when Jim leaves, maybe Jay takes over? Objectively, that would approximate the shock level when Uncle John took over the Ravens after coaching special teams. Maybe Jim retiring or taking one last swing at the NFL and turning it over to Jay was the plan all along? We could do worse.

Fact:  Every position group Jay has coached at Michigan has performed very well.

While he obviously does not yet have the resume to be a HC, I bet he is a really good coach and over time could build the resume/experience to become a HC somewhere.  He'd have to take a string of assistant jobs in other programs first...

Not sure why I'm getting down votes. I posed this as a alternative to consider if/when Jim leaves. This board (and myself) generally think very highly of Jay so is it shocking he'd be considered for the head job over Gattis or MacDonald (thinking only of internal hires), both of whom have much shorter tenures and who have weaker connections to the university than Jay? I am not being a smartass when I say Jay may be the next guy up. He probably wouldn't this year but if Jim sticks around another five years or so it would become more and more likely given the competence Jay has displayed.

OP is a troll, but I think JH is actually gone this time. Realizing that we ain’t paying $25-$30M per recruiting class like A&M and not getting several 5* per class like Georgia and Bama, where’s the upside for him? He gave us an incredible season, a generational beatdown of OSU and a B1G championship, all while taking a beating from the fan base and media and taking a humiliating pay cut. He’s got nothing left to prove here.

He’s 58 so it’s now or never. Also has a family that has settled in a school system and (for the time being) is a god in A2. He obviously doesn’t care about money, and probably has no clue how much he even has. If he wanted to walk, last year was the time. This whole thing has happened every year and I look for JH to squash it real soon. It’s not good for recruiting and he knows that.

he's not leaving.  he doesn't need the money.  he bleeds maize and blue.  he is home.  he has lots of kids, including young kids, and wants no part of the pro carousel of coaches.  he's not moving his family.  he's not leaving AA.

i don't care what some click-bait reporter says, opines, guesses, hears a whisper of, it's all total manure.  he's not leaving.

EDIT:  Op at a -60 right now.  lets see how far we can go.

EDIT:  well good morning fellow campers. we have doubled that to a -120 @ 0548 hrs.  i know we'll lose steam today but hat tip to the collective.

Already rich coaches and athletes don’t negotiate new contracts based on whether they need the money. Money’s great, but it’s also about respect and making sure an organization values you enough to pay you what the market says you deserve. Why should an athlete or coach ever take less than market value from a hugely wealthy school or team owner?

yes and no.  i'm in the same age range and man, i miss having little ones.  our 5 youngest are teenagers and they are a blast, but the thought that the 'end of the road' in terms of kids being home is not one i am eagerly anticipating.  all my siblings are empty-nesters and i know there are some enjoyable parts to that, but after having such a full, active, fun house i will miss those days very much.

please dear God i hope that is true. i have told all the kids that the farm is theirs. get married, bring spouse home.  start having babies.  i'll build them a house on the farm for a price they won't ever be able to beat. we'll see.  providence may lead them all far away, but i am very hopeful that at least some will be nearby.   the twins have told me most recently that after they get done playing college football they want to come home and be co-head coaches of our local high school team.  oh man, that would be off the chart fun.

I still go back to his interview after the big ten championship game with the bigten network crew. His son Jack was with him, he made the comment that Jack was a future Michigan quarterback and quipped "hes got a pretty good arm". I think he would love to coach his son at Michigan.

Count me out of the "most" of the fan base wanting him gone. And. Put me down for the "nah, he's not gone": he's probably the Wolverine HC for as long as he wants.

Harbaugh is correct the only way he is able to compete with the elite teams is for Michigan to open up the NIL faucet!  I think if things do not improve he may leave at the end of next season. I think he would also like to bring more talent in through the portal. Michigan would be in a good position to get DE and DL through the portal but I don't think it will happen.
