Shea Patterson cut by the Michigan Panthers

Shea was the number one pick in the USFL draft this year. He was picked up immediately by the New Orleans Breakers. He has had an up and down season so far but every time I watched he was running for his life from a porous offensive line.

I've always wondered about the accuracy of Gattis' comment. Did Shea really spend too much time on the course? It's been repeated so often by so many, even this long after the fact. But was it ever corroborated, or was that Gattis just shooting off his mouth?

I did find it funny that Gattis left in a huff for the same position in Miami, claiming he'd been disrespected by the administration when it was apparent that he wasn't being considered as a successor to Harbaugh. Calling out your QB in public doesn't seem like such a respectful move, either. Maybe it was things like that that made Manuel think Gattis wasn't right for the job.

I agree.  That offensive line is horrible for the Panthers!  When he had time he looked really good, but he had time maybe 30% of the snaps that were passing plays.

Shea has enough physical talent. Not being able to read a defense and lacking composure and pocket presence are more at the heart of Shea's short-comings as a QB. Indications, from the outside looking in, are that he was a wonderful practice player-with the "do not hit me" shirt on.

From what I've seen, when he isn't running for his life, he's scraping the snap off the turf or jumping to try to knock it down.  He has looked best in the two-minute drills where he is deciding what the play should look like. That smells like bad coaching to me and bad play calling during the competitive portion of the game. Also, whoever said he had good receivers hasn't been watching because they drop anything outside their frame (and a good number of throws that hit them in both hands).

Having Fischer as GM and head coach surely did not help his chances or the teams chances at doing anything. Said it the second that Fischer become coach of this team they were doomed, well before Shea got drafted number 1 which honestly he should not have been.

I venture to say that the vast majority here were quite surprised by Patterson being picked first overall, as I know I was.   And for the first overall pick to be cut already, is a fireable offense by the Panthers scouting staff. Think about it... the teams haven't been formed yet, unlike the NFL, the latter is simply fortifying the roster.  The first overall pick should be the top player in the league, and is cut six games later.  Epic fail by the scouting, regardless if the player was a Michigan alum.

I love Shea and all players that put on the winged helmet, but he's just a below average QB with a ton of unwarranted hype around him really since Ole Miss.

Its just the truth.  I think its great there's a league he can compete in and make some kind of a living playing a game.

Panthers coaching decisions are bone headed.

I watched most of the Panthers games.

Shea Patterson was usually pretty good given the situation.  He often didn't have a lot of time to pass.  It wasn't uncommon for receivers to drop passes that hit their hands.

Most of the trouble for the Panthers was an amazing level of coaching ineptitude in a couple key areas.

For most of the season, they didn't have a kicker who could make even extra points, let alone field goals.  They did this on purpose to save a roster spot, but picked a punter who couldn't make FG's rather than kicker who could punt.  They only changed this situation a couple of games ago.  They lost some games because of this.

Also, every game I watched, whenever the clock was under about 2 minutes, they threw away clock and plays.  Going slowly, wasting time.  Failing to use available time outs.  Choosing to try for FG (and miss) when they could have run more plays then gone for FG.  Choosing to punt from the 50 yard line with 45 seconds left in 2nd Q when they could have run 2 more plays to run out the clock and maybe score.  The other team ended up scoring in those 45 seconds.

Unbelievable levels of coaching ineptitude in those regards.

Then, they would have the worst luck sometimes.  Like those Michigan vs. anOSU games where the ball keeps bouncing right to anOSU like magic.  It seemed like every time a Panther's pass was tipped, it went right to a defender.  Or a Panthers player would fumble at a key point that would break the back of a critical drive and all momentum.  That sort of stuff.

In all of this, Shea was generally pretty good, given the situation.  When defenders got through the line, he had lots of great scrambles, buying time and making some really nice plays.  He had a lot of good throws and good runs.  2 games ago, he threw for 300 yards.  He's the #3 QB in the USFL in passing stats, even with the various difficulties.  He was one of the better contributions to the Panthers.

So, I think it was another bonehead move to get rid of him.

I won't be watching any more Panthers games.  I was watching and enjoying the games because I wanted to see our former Wolverine QB play.

Shea was as good at Michigan as you could expect a 3 star QB who paid his dues and learned his craft to be. Unfortunately Shea was a 5 star that was handed the job the day he arrived, allowed to keep the job regardless of his repeated failure to improve his weaknesses and from all reports gave minimal offseason effort. So we have to judge his career by those criteria. In which case. Shea was a disappointment.
