They recruit regions, typically not positions.

But more importantly as it relates to the point of the comment I was referring to, a depleted position typically falls on the responsibility of the coordinator or the head coach. It's a bit of a stretch to say a position is thin because thr position coach didn't do a good job of acquiring talent.

Evenyoubrutus is correct, but that isn't to say that the position coach doesn't also factor in to recruiting. Recruits often are pretty interested in who their position coach will be, and what sort of track record they have in developing players at their position.

Although Michigan coaches have geographic recruiting responsibities, its clear that part of the draw for recent OL recuits is Warriner's track record of putting guys into the NFL. Its also clear that Mattison's record of success with defensive linemen played a large role is attracting DL recruits to come to Michigan and I don't think its a coincidence that we've struggled with recruiting (and development) since he left.

This may be fine. Michigan's problems with recruiting seem to be more organizational. I'm not sure there is a Warriner level wizard out there that could come in and magically make our razor thin depth serviceable this year.

Don't know that we can blame Nua for all of the personnel shortages on the DL...

But there's no evidence that he was a positive for the position, either. Maybe he has helped develop Aiden and Kwity? Because those two are exceptions to an otherwise shocking position group.

Championship teams have elite DLs. We don't.

This, I’m not thrilled with. He didn’t seem to do much with what he had and didn’t recruit worth a crap. Granted he had the “COVID year from hell”, but still didn’t see much improvement over the year. If I’m wrong, I’ll gladly eat crow. Hell, I live in the Yoop, so I have eaten venison, rabbit, bear, partridge, etc. Why not add another to the meal plan.

So the one defensive coach generally acknowledged to be very successful at the coaching side of football—Zordich—is leaving, while guys who don't seem to have been very successful at that are staying.
