Shaun Nua expected to return
"Defensive line coach Shaun Nua is being retained, sources said..."
January 19th, 2021 at 5:50 PM ^
Why indeed, this makes little sense. Our DL has regressed since he arrived.
This seems like such a dumb retention.
January 19th, 2021 at 5:56 PM ^
We’re gonna need legendary coaching of legendary cornerbacks to cover receivers since we’ll be competing with Toledo for defensive line recruits
January 19th, 2021 at 6:20 PM ^
If I Nua good reason, I’d tell you.
January 19th, 2021 at 5:20 PM ^
So are we done?
January 19th, 2021 at 6:40 PM ^
Sam says no
January 19th, 2021 at 5:20 PM ^
Cool...but we need some fucking players he'd coach more than we need him.
January 19th, 2021 at 5:27 PM ^
His plan is to have no players in his group so he can be the one to work remotely this season.
January 19th, 2021 at 5:31 PM ^
Things are making more sense now!
January 19th, 2021 at 5:31 PM ^
Isn’t recruiting said players kind of his job too? Don’t see many DTs coming up through the pipeline.
January 19th, 2021 at 5:32 PM ^
One would think. Partially why this is a little bit of a head scratcher.
January 19th, 2021 at 5:33 PM ^
That isn't how it works.
January 19th, 2021 at 6:32 PM ^
So you're saying position coaches don't recruit players for the positions they are coaching? Well I just never would have guessed that..
January 19th, 2021 at 6:38 PM ^
They recruit regions, typically not positions.
But more importantly as it relates to the point of the comment I was referring to, a depleted position typically falls on the responsibility of the coordinator or the head coach. It's a bit of a stretch to say a position is thin because thr position coach didn't do a good job of acquiring talent.
January 19th, 2021 at 8:44 PM ^
They recruit regions and as the recruitment progresses, recruits are passed off to the positions coaches. So Nua has a region, but also has a hand in recruiting all defensive linemen.
January 19th, 2021 at 6:53 PM ^
I’m honestly left wondering if this is a for serious post.
January 19th, 2021 at 8:21 PM ^
Evenyoubrutus is correct, but that isn't to say that the position coach doesn't also factor in to recruiting. Recruits often are pretty interested in who their position coach will be, and what sort of track record they have in developing players at their position.
Although Michigan coaches have geographic recruiting responsibities, its clear that part of the draw for recent OL recuits is Warriner's track record of putting guys into the NFL. Its also clear that Mattison's record of success with defensive linemen played a large role is attracting DL recruits to come to Michigan and I don't think its a coincidence that we've struggled with recruiting (and development) since he left.
January 19th, 2021 at 8:01 PM ^
Don't worry, the Samoans are coming.
January 19th, 2021 at 5:23 PM ^
Nuat great, Bob!
January 19th, 2021 at 5:31 PM ^
Bob Shoop didn't see your note. He hasn't logged onto Zoom yet.
January 19th, 2021 at 5:55 PM ^
Pretty sure Bob has left the chat.
January 19th, 2021 at 5:29 PM ^
golf clap...
January 19th, 2021 at 5:33 PM ^
Well Fuck
January 19th, 2021 at 5:35 PM ^
This may be fine. Michigan's problems with recruiting seem to be more organizational. I'm not sure there is a Warriner level wizard out there that could come in and magically make our razor thin depth serviceable this year.
January 19th, 2021 at 5:36 PM ^
I can think of one. He has man boobs and looks ugly in red.
January 20th, 2021 at 12:45 PM ^
Santa?
January 19th, 2021 at 5:54 PM ^
Right, so how is Dudek still employed?
January 19th, 2021 at 6:20 PM ^
Because his main job is to coordinate on-sight visits, which he does very well
January 19th, 2021 at 5:35 PM ^
DL-Nua
OLB-Jean-Mary
ILB-Macdonald
CB-Zordich
S-Linguist
Is that everyone or is Zordich still gone?
January 19th, 2021 at 5:40 PM ^
S - Helow
CB - Linguist
January 19th, 2021 at 5:50 PM ^
You have to be fucking kidding. The dude can’t coach or recruit. And I guess the LBs will suck while we’re at it too. Harbaugh is trying to get fired and nobody is taking the bait.
January 19th, 2021 at 5:58 PM ^
Id cash in his position and get a high level recruiter. At least start helping out the next coaching squad.
January 19th, 2021 at 6:33 PM ^
You really are an angry lil feller aren't ya.
January 19th, 2021 at 5:39 PM ^
Nua is a nothing. He doesn't recruit elite line talent, he doesn't develop players, hell I don't even know he is awake.
January 19th, 2021 at 5:43 PM ^
The Poly pipeline - slightly less successful than the Enbridge pipeline.
January 19th, 2021 at 5:48 PM ^
Don't know that we can blame Nua for all of the personnel shortages on the DL...
But there's no evidence that he was a positive for the position, either. Maybe he has helped develop Aiden and Kwity? Because those two are exceptions to an otherwise shocking position group.
Championship teams have elite DLs. We don't.
January 19th, 2021 at 6:00 PM ^
How many d-lineman has Nua recruited? I don’t really know the answer but I’d say not many. I would think the d-line would be his area of responsibility
January 19th, 2021 at 6:02 PM ^
Position coaches don’t recruit their position exclusively. That being said, he is listed as primary or secondary recruiter for McGregor, VanSumeren, Jenkins, and Bennett. All DL
January 19th, 2021 at 6:25 PM ^
January 19th, 2021 at 6:57 PM ^
This can’t be correct (according to MGoLogic)... one of those kids is an OT!
January 19th, 2021 at 5:50 PM ^
This, I’m not thrilled with. He didn’t seem to do much with what he had and didn’t recruit worth a crap. Granted he had the “COVID year from hell”, but still didn’t see much improvement over the year. If I’m wrong, I’ll gladly eat crow. Hell, I live in the Yoop, so I have eaten venison, rabbit, bear, partridge, etc. Why not add another to the meal plan.
January 19th, 2021 at 5:52 PM ^
Well, he was a better on field coach that Shoop last year.
January 19th, 2021 at 6:12 PM ^
You sure about that?
January 19th, 2021 at 8:47 PM ^
r/wooosh.
Shoop never made it to the 'field'.
January 20th, 2021 at 8:55 PM ^
I believe you’re the one that missed it...
I was implying Nua wasn’t a better on field coach than someone that never coached on the field...
January 19th, 2021 at 5:53 PM ^
So the one defensive coach generally acknowledged to be very successful at the coaching side of football—Zordich—is leaving, while guys who don't seem to have been very successful at that are staying.
