Semi-OT: Recruit's Father Hints that Butch Jones has a Fake Personality

Submitted by EastCoast Esq. on

I was reading an article on Scout ($) about Rutger Reitmaier and I came across a very interesting quote from his father (as an aside, the article makes it seem like we have a good shot at him). He was talking about coaches that are real with you, coaches that are like used car dealers, and a third kind of "sly" coach that is harder to weed out. Below is the quotation:

But there's another group of coaches that mask their true intentions and those have been the hardest ones to kind of go through. They seem real, but then when you get to know them a little better or adversity hits or something and you see their true colors. That's what I'm trying to guard against with Rutger. They're all going to pump him up and say he's the greatest and whatever you want you're going to get it and what I'm trying to do is make sure we can weed out each of these coaches. Rutger is pretty smart, but there's some coaches that are sly. There's one in particular that both Rutger and I looked at each other after we visited there and they lost the game and I'm like going, ‘that's the true colors right there my friend. That's the true colors.’ It's easy when you win but what do you do when you lose?"

A quick look at Rutger's 247 timeline shows that he's only had a couple visits and one of those was to Tennessee on October 15th. They were blown out by Alabama that week.

It's not surprising, but I think Rutger's father called out Butch Jones for being fake. Just thought that was interesting, especially after Harbaugh and Jones got into a mini-feud during the off-season.

Yes, although you don't hear a lot of people say, "Simply squeeze the bulb and gently Butch Jones the area", although maybe they should say that given the behavior of the man. Actually, that could very well apply to a few coaches.

I hear Hollywood bad guy sheriff in some cheesy revenge based spaghetti western, yeah fake would be a good word for that guy. I have to admit I like me some Butch Jones shadenfreude.

At the same time I have to admit I genuinely felt bad about Charlie Strong. Mainly because I don't think he is fake by the way he came in like a good guy sheriff who cleaned house at Texas when he came riding into town. I am not going to dig up proof or put down the article link. You are just gonna have to trust me....Sincerely, Chevy Chase.

Might that have anything to do with Jalen Hurd announcing he will transfer (now he's saying he'll enter the draft) half way through the season? That may fall more on the player, but doesn't look good from afar that a star player "quit" on his team and coach half way through the year, and blamed scheme for his struggles this season.

coaches are a huge part of the deal.

But in good football faith... you can't hit a 1.000.  Sometiimes bad things happen.

Case in point the penalty Harbaugh took in the game.  Sometimes Harbaugh loses his cool.  That cost the team dearly.  That could come off poorly to a recruit or parent.  Outside of the game - I don't think Jim misses too many times with parents.

If my kid was being recruited, I'd look at how the practice is run and/or the S&C.  That's where a coach shines and shows value.  That is where your kid will be for  4+ years.

Honestly many HCs are asses or phonies.
