Sean Clifford returning to PSU

Using his COVID year to come back. This seems like good news for the rest of the B1G East IMO. Clifford is who he is, an average to above average QB who has either stagnated or regressed in his 3 years as a starter. If Clifford left PSU's QBs behind him were all bad, but there was a chance they could have brought in a much better QB from the portal. Now that he loses Dotson and a few OL, I can't imagine he takes step forward next year. And considering PSU may lose 7+ starters on defense, they could be in for another 7-5 year next year.

I wouldn't call that good. I would call it a known opponent. He isn't a great QB, but if he has the weapons (and an OL that won't let him die) he's capable of pushing good teams.

What is good is that PSU looks like a rebuild next year. They're losing a lot, the OL will still suck, and Clifford can't cover all that up. Had he left, PSU would be really screwed, but now they're only kind of screwed.

Also, hoping his ribs don't get turned into even less solid jelly.

He certainly wasn't going to go pro, but I don't see how this is good news for the B1G East. Clifford isn't fantastic, but he was miles better than anything else PSU had. If I were a PSU fan, I'd take Clifford in a heartbeat over a random shot from the portal.

This is especially true because PSU doesn't exactly have a great sales pitch to a potential QB in the portal. As you noted, they're losing their only good WR and part of their OL, which was dire to begin with. They're not going to attract a Kyler Murray or Justin Fields to play in that offense (or even a J.T. Daniels) - they would be in the market for somebody more like a John O'Korn, who is in the portal because he lost a competition at his current school.

I don't know, I think he's a pretty good QB.  The bigger problem is their inability to protect him.  I'd rather have PSU have to break in a new guy.

I think your wrong on this take.  This is real good news for PSU.  They would probably be in some trouble next year without him.  He is a solid QB.

He's a gluten for punishment but I admire his guts. Clifford does face an up hill battle at PSU. His draft stock must not be that high (I don't know where he ranks in the 2022 draft).

PSU's problem wasn't Clifford. If you can't run the ball at all or protect your QB, eventually that catches up to you. In fact, Clifford was the biggest reason they had a shot to beat Michigan at all.

He’s a solid QB who could make an NFL roster as a backup if he had an O-line to protect him at PSU and he could play to his potential.

No idea what their O-line looks like next year, but if not better, PSU coaches really failed him.  Guy is tough as they come, to the point that opposing fanbases and coaches take notice (even COY!) Harbaugh called it out after our game with them.

Yeah who wants a 5th year senior QB who can scramble and is top 3-4 in your conference to return.  Esp without two NFL DEs.  What a dumb post.
