I guess they're talking about just tackles.  But if it's the whole oline, plenty of teams have had multiple players taken.  I think the VT team Michigan played in the Sugar Bowl had 4 Olinemen taken in the draft that year (though not all first 3 rounds).

“It gives us a lot of different options," Executive Vice President of Football Operations/General Manager John Elway said. "With the offensive line there we’re depending on what we do with Orlando (Franklin) and if he can stay (at left guard), but we’re going to look at all of the different options. With [Schofield's] versatility he’ll start at tackle and move inside and play some guard also. We’re going to be playing with a bunch of different combinations and by the end I’m sure we’ll come out with the best combination. Nothing is in concrete but Mike was just a guy that brings great competition and athletic and has done it.”

It certainly wasn't one of the best.  Seeing our center get knocked backwards (Miller) was a first for me.

Borges' playcalling was suspect, esp. the trash tornado game.  IMO he was definitely part of the problem.

However our OL ... yikes.  May take a year  or two before the OL straightens itself out (by that I mean 5 , experienced starters).  No one wants to hear it but that's where it looks like it's headed.

Schofield is the first Wolverine to be drafted by Denver since Jeremy LeSueur in 2004.

I had not heard the name Ian Gold in a while, but I remember his presence on the team well as he was on campus during the same years as me and he was a very good LB in Ann Arbor, and as I recall, very productive at the next level as well in his two stints with Denver.

To the intent of this thread, however, congratulations to Michael Schofield and hopefully he ends up having a good craeer at the next level. Very glad whenever we get to see Wolverines get a shot at a pro career.

I think it's just a given that you're going to struggle as a freshman or RS freshman OL unless you're Jake Long or Taylor Lewan. By your RS sophomore year you should be somewhat good. If we have trouble running it this year then we should run something of an air raid offense.

I'm excited as I think Schofields best football is in front of him. What a great landing spot for him. He was killing it this off season in drills and camps etc! Good for him! Pulling for Gallon to be drafted by Philly Denver Indy or NE

Those are all great fits for him IMO!

For all we know the next Lewan, Long, Hutchinson could be one of Kugler, Fox, Cole, Dawson, Tuley Tillman. Guys that haven't even played yet. Youth is an excuse when the majority of the line is freshmen however there better be progress being made as sophomores.

I'm pretty sure all of these people who want us to hire RR back wanted him fired in 2010. If we do end up firing BH, three years later they'll say that we should fire fire the new guy and bring BH back.

After reading the above comments, I'm now convinced the NFL draft is the perfect Rorschach test for Michigan fans.  The optimists see the silver lining and the haters see confirmation that the coaches suck.

as so many things have come together to create what is going on now and some are our fault, circumstance and flat out bad luck with many more to boot. I'll get the "TL;DR" reply but don't care. I may diary but I'll start here by saying that CFB has changed from our "glory years" but we have not. No sport has its teams success directly correlate with coaching more than CFB. Not even close. Just for reference, a kid I know personally from SE MI (wanted a UM offer, never got one so it was BC, Stanford or MAC) played at Stanford during their terrible years. His last year was under Harbaugh. Same kids that won (IIRC) a single game the year prior and those same kids beat USC in USC's juggernaut years. Won 4 games that year (IIRC) but with the same guys and were competitive. He hung around the program as an unpaid guy the year after. So, two years after playing, I see him home in a grocery store and we shoot the shit when Harbaugh really had Stanford rolling in year 3. I tell him I got to watch him play, etc but to the question of what was so different that last year he said to me that it was nothing more than coaching. He said it felt like going from a HS coach to an NFL coach. He looked at unranked recruits and found their talents and fully maximized them. He reevaluated EVERY PLAYER. He had a no name FB/LB that played every down very well, ffs. He had a big, slow FB turn HB nearly win a Heisman. The OL? He benched higher rated kids/upperclassmen for younger, nastier, hungry guys that took to coaching. They didn't start off as strong as who they replaced or even as mentally ready......but they wanted to knock the shit out of people and they learned fast. They weren't soft. They turned into high draft picks. I'm just saying that when something isn't working, you owe NO PLAYER anything. Rankings or seniority be damned. THE TEAM, THE TEAM, THE TEAM! The school that invented the mantra doesn't even live by it anymore, IMO. All I'll say unless I write a diary much longer than this. The problem? RR? Hoke? Staff? Bad luck? Poor OL recruiting? Michigan AD mentality itself? Being soft? Playing a worse player due to seniority? Guys, it's a bit of everything. I'm not a Debbie downer. Harbaugh was just an example as many coaches do the same. Michigan just isn't MICHIGAN anymore and for more reasons than I could say in the next 5 hours. The program needs a reboot but those that could do it are those that don't mind being mediocre. Seemingly so, at least. Money still comes in by the train load......

we have talent. Even our OL. Young but just physically better than most they'll face. The right coach can squeeze a dollar out of a dime. The youth excuse is no longer valid to me THIS YEAR. Win now or Michigan needs to be MICHIGAN again and write a blank check to a modern, top end coach that MICHIGAN deserves. If Hoke, great! If not, stop F'n around and blank check a truly elite HC. Finally, could give a shit about the "lineage" anymore. If he can win, get him. Going to bed ha.

I'm really surprised tho that at least the "toughness" hasn't returned with hoke. I've always sensed that was his mantra. I also think he's a helluva salesman and a players coach. He says and does all of the right things with the program. He has yet to win tho?!?
I never thought he was the most cerebral of football minds but that's why we hire coordinators, right? I guess the next year...sigh....or two will tell us. I could certainly see keeping him through '15 especially if there isn't a great replacement candidate around. If he can't get to the big ten championship in 2015 tho, he probably doesn't deserve another shot (Unless the team is teetering on the edge of something great about to happen).
You can see where my indecisiveness would make a terrible AD.

Have you ever seen Hoke rip a kid or get mad. Even when he is acting mad he seems like a kitten. Bo said Michigan Man because our basketball coach left to a different university while we were entering the tournament. He didn't mean a Michigan man could only be hired. So tired of hearing that wrong, and Hoke is an idiot when he references it.

Danwillhor

May 11th, 2014 at 3:41 AM ^

We knew what we hired in Hoke and that was a personality with UM ties that could reunite the fans/alums. As for coaching, he'd leave the actual decisions on game day to his staff but he'd personally refuse to slow the team to be soft across the board. It's one thing to call injuries "boo boos" and another to see the overall team be soft as baby shit on the collective level. Not saying you have to go Kelly on kids. You need to let them know "that play/mentality is not acceptable", even if in private. As I said, it's this year for me and it's more what the team looks like than winning a NC or even the conference.

I thought he was projected as a 5th-7th rounder so I was pleasantly surprised to see his name this morning.

Not sure what to make of two OTs drafted in the 1st 3 rounds and still having basically the worst O-line ever. That interior must've been something close to the worst in Michigan history

From the start I thought it was an epic mistake that they did not put Schofield at right guard Lending experience inside. I think the line would've played a lot better last year Had they done that. Is Borges or Funk responsible ???? I do remember hearing Borges justify it by saying having a rook RT would be far worse. id take that bet
