Rutgers Starting QB Sitkowski considering redshirt

Artur Sitkowski, aka the Quarterback Rutgers Keeps Trying to Replace but Nobody is Healthy and Better (QRKTRNHB), has asked to sit out this weekend's game against Maryland.

"I had a discussion with Art this morning and he came to me and said he’s considering — he obviously had a really tough week and he’s going through a lot — so he’s contemplating evaluating taking a redshirt,'' [Interim Head Coach] Campanile told reporters Thursday, four days after replacing fired head coach Chris Ash. "He asked not to play in this game so we’ll give him some time, supporting him 1,000 percent."

It seems Sitkowski (who's a true sophomore) is strongly considering becoming the latest healthy starting player to bench himself after 4 games to keep his options open for a redshirt and immediate eligibility elsewhere next season.

True freshman Johnny Langan is your new Quarterback Rutgers Keeps Trying to Replace but Nobody is Healthy and Better and Not Strongly Considering a Transfer (QRKTRNHBNSCT) for the big game against Maryland on Saturday.

He's a sophmore, though. If he takes advantage of the four-game redshirt rule this year he'd have three years of eligibility left.

He's looked terrible but he's playing behind the Rutgers offensive line throwing to the Rugters receivers. What kind of chance has he had to look good? He was recruited by legitimate, non-Rutgers P5 schools, so he might have enough talent to land at a lesser P5 school.

I mean, unless playing at Rutgers has broken the poor bastard competely. Which is not out of the question.

At some point, you have to start feeling sorry for Rutgers.  I think I have reached that point.  Mired in awful, no sign it will ever change.  The only thing they contribute is a chance for Michigan alums living in NY to see a curb stomping every other year.

No. They did this to themselves.

Rutgers could have been the team that quietly lost a lot, recruited what they could, and develop a long-term coaching strategy that mitigates their disadvantages.

Instead, they tried to swagger their way past the heavy hitters of the conference, get mouthy, and pick fights thinking that Ohio State would back them up.

Smart consideration by the new coach as well.  When I get hired into a new company mid-year, I find the garbage and get it all out in the current year, and make moves to strengthen the upcoming new year.  You are not going to get blamed for the interim year - you may as well take the hit, and do what you can to make the next 2020 season stronger, when you will get full blame/credit as the coach and leader.

Campanile was always going to be a long shot to get the job after this season. There are plenty of rumors that Rutgers is already trying to hire Schiano. I don't see how having his starting QB quit rather than play for him is going to help though.

In any case, I don't think other schools are going to judge him on this season if things go south. He wasn't in line to get interest for HC jobs. He was only the Rutgers TE coach.

I don't get it.

You started 11 games last year as a freshman.  You are starting this year as a sophomore.

Unless you are looking to transfer down to FCS or D2 I don't see what sitting out gains you...

He probably thinks he can get a starting gig at pretty much any Group of 5 school that loses a starting QB to graduation this year. And he's probably not far off.

He also gets the added benefit of not having to get beat to hell because his OL is in no way to prepared to defend him against OSU, MSU, PSU, and Michigan and that isn't going to change with a new coach.

But why does he want a starting gig at a G5 school when he is a multi year starting QB in the big ten, albeit at Rutgers....

Like did this kid just quit on his career?  What G5 team would be interested in him if he doesn't think he has what it takes to keep starting at Rutgers.  If he was getting benched I would totally get it.  But he is starting.

Was he really that close to Ash?

Your argument makes no sense. Of course he could continue starting for Rutger but why keep getting yourself killed behind a shitty offensive with no identify and a line that is liable to get you injured.  G5 and lesser P5 teams take backups that couldn’t sniff the field and make them starters repeatedly.

He’s in a dead end situation this year and is about to get a new coach who may or may not run the kind of offense that he is suited for and has gotten beat the hell up. Save your body and eligibility and keep your options open.

I think he believes the current offense/coaching is hot garbage, and why not redshirt this year and see what Rutgers is bringing in.  If Schiano is coming back, Sitkowski likely expects next year's offense to be competent and give him a chance at success.  If not, he can try to find greener pastures elsewhere.

He's knows this season will just be more of the same.  Why play?

we might not have the greatest year this year, but we'll always have that one time we beat a team so bad they fired their coach AND their QB didn't want to play football for the rest of the season.

Probably just trying to save his health. He took some big shots against Michigan and can see it isn't going to get any better.
