Rutgers President Shows His Cards: Not on Board for Fall Football, Insults President Trump for Advocating for Return of B1G Football

Submitted by Indy Pete - Go Blue on September 11th, 2020 at 11:18 AM

Jonathan Holloway, President of Rutgers accuses Trump of 'cheap politics' and questions the national importance of B1G football:

"I mean, it's just cheap politics," he told NJ Advance Media. "I want that person to be paying attention to matters of national security and national importance. This does not rise to that level -- not for a half-second. And even if it was a president that I was completely in love with that was doing this, I'd still think it would be cheap politics."

"If I'm wrong because I was erring on the side of safety, I don't have a problem with that," said Holloway, who played football at Stanford, where he was teammates with Cory Booker, now a U.S. senator representing New Jersey. "I don't think I'm wrong, though. I just don't think it. And if I had to put money down, we're going to see some radical changes within a month -- no later than October. I'm really worried about what we're heading toward, on just college campuses in general, not just sports. It's deeply concerning."

Here we have a B1G university president (unfortunately Rutgers counts) insulting the President of the United States, stating a billion dollar B1G football/sports industry does not rise to national importance, not for a half-second, and cryptically speculating on 'some radical changes within a month - no later than October' without providing specifics.  Holloway sounds like he is trying his own hand at 'cheap politics'.  This guy is one of the 14 people with a vote on whether or not to allow B1G athletes to make their own choice to play or not this fall.  Meanwhile, the athletes' peers have the opportunity to play the sport they love, improve their skills, market themselves for NFL teams, and improve their chances of huge paydays in the NFL.  High school football is happening.  Youth football is happening.  Professional football is happening.  But guys like Holloway will not allow college athletes to play football; a group that the majority already believes is unfairly exploited in the current system.  The irony is truly remarkable.  Many of you openly dislike our nation's President - for valid reasons that I respect.  But, a university president arrogantly speculating with a very political stance, while accusing the President of the USA of playing cheap politics is embarrassing.  Holloway made one thing clear: he does not think he is wrong.  He just doesn't think it.  Bringing in Rutgers continues to cause embarrassment for the conference.

mGrow, Trump has slurred speech, lapses in memory, and disorganized thinking and speech.  Because his speeches/rallies are so off the cuff, it is rarely noticed or discussed.

He was recently hospitalized for what has not disclosed (rumor is strokes), is hardly the vision of good health (overweight to obese), and is no spring chicken, at 74 himself.

I think both are clearly well past their physical and mental prime, but Biden in a coma is better than Trump....First, do no harm.  I'd vote for anybody that won't actively partake in destroying our institutions, shitting on he military, lying about a pandemic, isn't a sociopathic narcissist, and a suspected traitor.

Whatever crap the far right tries to throw at Biden, I know one thing for certain - he is a far better human being than the orange conman.

It's a low bar, I know, but with only two options, the choice is very clear.

I cannot take people seriously when they cite mental acuity as a reason to vote for Donald Fucking Trump. The guy who talks about injecting cleaning solution, who said Biden will "hurt God" if he's elected, who says windmills cause cancer, who thinks F-35 jets are literally invisible, and who thinks nuking hurricanes might be a good idea. The man is also obviously so narcissistic that it's a pathology.

Your usually a pretty reasonable poster, but this comment says you're either spending too much time watching conservative propaganda or have become an armchair MD (neither of which is particularly appealing). Biden stumbles in his speeches and fumbles words -- this is true, but it is a leap to say that somebody who has faced stuttering problems fumbling words indicates he now has "early onset dimensia" and/or "diminished mental capacity"

Oh, and if verbal diarrhea is the qualifier for the diseases you think afflict Biden, then I'd encourage you to look at a transcript from any of Trump's spontaneous remarks to the press over his entire presidency and ask yourself if he is not suffering from the same afflictions and worse.

The responses to my post are fascinating (to me anyway).  Hatter stated "I can't think of a single reason why anyone would vote for Trump" so I provided one.  And I took the additional step of providing additional criticism of Trump (while agreeing with his negarive assessment of him as a person) and closed with stating "both candidates suck".

Nowhere did I say I was voting for Trump.  Nowhere did I say I was supporting Trump.  I simply gave one of the biggest concerns many voters have about Biden (and Trump) as reported recently by Politico-hardly a right wing mouthpiece by anyones standard:

 https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2020/03/07/2020-dementia-campaig…

And yes I'm well aware of Joe's speech impediment.  And also yes, I think he's undoubtedly an exponentially better person than POTUS.  But to claim there are zero reasons to not vote for him implies he's perfect in every way and sorry, I don't see that in him.

To me this election is simply choosing the lesser of two evils (so to speak).  And lastly, I was actually a supporter of Mayor Pete and/or Yang-not Trump-in the primaries here in Ohio before both dropped out.

Yeah, and a lot of people believe that actors and Democratic politicians are kidnapping children to sell them into sex slavery, drink their blood, and harvest adrenochrome from them. Those are the same people who believe that because Joe Biden occasionally stumbles over a word that he has dementia.

It wasn't your criticism of Biden that led me to comment on your approval of the judges he's installed, but instead the years that both of us have been active on this board.

That being said, I'm willing to listen. What is it about Joe Biden that allows you to state with such certainty that he has dementia. I'd also be curious as to your opinion on Trump's mental faculties given his struggles with extemporaneous speaking, reading from a teleprompter, or understanding basic facts about the function of the government he nominally oversees.

I suppose if someone does believe that a candidate has dementia that would be a valid reason to vote for someone else, especially after having Nancy Reagan's astrologer running the country for three years.

However, we have a binary choice. And I'd rather almost anyone else be in charge.

Also I think hillbilly's points are valid.

No, actually, a bunch of you are petty small business tyrants, too. The kind of selfish assholes that own a Sea Doo dealership they inherited from their father and think they are "self made." The kind of people who have "boat parades--where 5 boats sink--that serve as a metaphor for their entire "me first, fuck everyone else" ideology.

[EDIT: this is in response to The Mayor's comment above where he says "I guess us conservatives are just dumb, working class people that can barely read and write"]

No, most of us are people you rub shoulders with every day. I work 2 full time jobs ( one for the Big three and the other a medium size nonprofit). I wouldn’t say I’m self made because I don’t really feel like I’ve accomplished much in the grand scheme of things. Both of my kids are married and successful and I’ve been married 29 years. I don’t own a boat and grew up poor. I probably don’t fit the U of M demographic. I said all of that to say, I really came here for the football and Basketball conversations because I’ve been a life long Michigan fan. I bleed Maize and Blue. All of my uncles went to U of M and I grew up loving the school. Been to the Big House 50 times or so. I realize that I’m definitely the minority on this board and will exit. The behavior on this board is why I’d rather go to a road game than the Big House because it is more enjoyable then to sit around a bunch of entitled, arrogant, know it all fans. ✌?

That's why I said proto-fascist.

He is wrapped up in jigoistic, preformative displays of strength and showmanship. He longs for a lost golden age. He eliminates people from his administration that show the slightest trace of independence or who attempt to follow the law when they are instructed to violate norms or legal standards. His rhetoric elevates a tiny rabble of anarchists to the level of a looming communist takeover, meanwhile ignoring overt and routine acts of violence committed by his supporters against those people. He glowingly admires strongman leaders who have subverted democratic systems in their own country. He has a litany of authoritarian strongman tendencies, that if empowered, could lead down the road of fascism. He's not there yet, but he has consistently shown a strong propensity for fascism.

He and his party have totally given up on trying to win the support of the majority of Americans. They are trying to win a narrow political victory by suppressing the vote in key swing states. Heck, his party isn't even doing anything to govern anymore. All Trump does is write executive orders, while the Senate occupies their time doing nothing but handing out lifetime appointments to federal judges to try to cement their power for the coming generation.

I'm just listing things that can be inferred from his statements and actions. I don't feel like it would be a useful exercise to cite sources for each of the things I wrote, but let it suffice to say that all of my assertions are backed up by numerous media reports. I defy you to dispute anything I wrote with sourced information.

The people affectionately calling our governor "big gretch" as she shutters small businesses and shunts infected people into nursing homes while she lectures you about the importance of taking to the streets to scream at people to fight the comorbid racism pandemic are saying these things. Just remember that. They hate you, and as much as you just want to be left alone, they aren't going to allow it. This is control.

It's courageous because there is a small, but extremely motivated and vocal minority of sports fans that are pushing for the B1G to throw caution to the wind and to start the season. I'm sure that all of the B1G presidents are getting bombarded by letters, emails, phone calls and protests that are demanding that they allow football to happen immediately. These people are being egged on by sports talk personalities and right wing political figures.

Eh, not really.

To do so right now is to directly insert yourself into the political shitfest. You might score praise and attention in the media, but you will also get  one side screaming and howling terrible things at you.

Jim Gaffigan spoke up recently against Trump. He has received an endless stream of hate in response, and may have lost some fans in the process.

Some people are staying away simply to avoid pissing anyone off right now.

Did not read this once I saw that you seem bothered by someone insulting Trump.  You know Trump, the draft dodger who thinks my dad and the millions of other Americans who did not dodge the draft and served in Vietnam are a bunch of suckers.

I read the full post. I think the assumption was spot on.

I deleted most of my original draft to do my best to toe the no-politics line, but I think the president of Rutgers is correct. I say that as a person who has opinions about whether college football should be happening, but who feels that many reasonable people can validly have a different opinion about that.

But it's a very reasonable interpretation of Trump's actions to infer that he's playing cheap politics--Trump has never carefully weighed pros and cons, he's always railed against any governor taking actions to mitigate a pandemic despite knowing that such actions were necessary.

Trump enjoys overwhelming support from Veterans. They have personally felt his concern for them and his 2 bills have revolutionized the VA. VA Choice Act was long overdue. Thank God we can now get service elsewhere if the wait is too long or the service is unavailable. The VA accountability act finally allows us to fire awful employees and administrators who were impossible to get rid of before.

Is it surprising that Trump supporters will make assertions like this without checking one single fact? And that their memories are entirely selective?

How about Trump not doing anything about intel on Russian bounties in Afghanistan? How does that sit with veterans? How does Trump insulting a gold star father sit with veterans? How does Trump calling war dead losers sit with veterans?

How does Trump's abandonment of Kurdish allies in Iraq to the Turks, which caused carnage among allies, sit with veterans?

How does Trump's offhand revelation of national security secrets to make himself look more important sit with veterans?

I'm so sick of the lies and tunnel vision.

Rutgers is embarrassing, but this is perhaps their best moment since joining the Big Ten.

He's right...Trump is definitely engaging in cheap politics.

"If I'm wrong because I was erring on the side of safety, I don't have a problem with that,"

This is a fantastic quote and shows the kind of understanding a leader MUST exhibit at a time like this. Overreaction to a global pandemic is absolutely preferred to under-reaction. Why is this hard to understand?
