Is the rumor that JJ McCarthy has a throwing arm injury, and need surgery?

Apparently the story is from Balas, who also said Harbaugh was gone to Minnesota. So it may or may not be true. But the rumor has taken wings on the internet.

So is it true?

To be fair, Harbaugh was planning on being gone, as he has since admitted himself.

Balas also reported that Sainristil was working with the DBs, which turned out to be true.

As for this rumor, that’d suck, especially for those of us who believe JJ’s upside is what this offense needs to take it to the next level. Hopefully it’s a quick recovery process and he can compete by fall.

Broke these taken wings
And learn to pass again
Learn to live so free
When we hear these rumors sing
The playbook of love will open up
And let us in
Broke these taken wings!

That's why we need at least two QBs... All the trash talk of Cade recently has been silly.  And JJ seems prone to injury.

Wishing for a speedy recovery if true.

Lingering shoulder injury.  Supposedly going in for surgery next week.  Out till mid-summer.

I have no proof or sources, so grains of salt and all that.

Out till mid-summer.

Will have extra time for film study. Silver lining in everything.

Trying to find a silver lining--could guarantee we keep both Cade and JJ for at least another season.  Cade won't leave if he has the inside track on starting, and JJ won't expect to be given the starting job if he isn't 100%.

As for why to not have the surgery until now, if it is a more minor cartilage injury you don't always rush to surgery with those.  Sometimes you prescribe rest and rehab and see how it responds.

So.....theory would be it hasn't responded well/quickly enough so next step is surgery.

Well it's obvious, whether the info is true or not, if you want everyone to "know" about it, you give it to Balas.

So would they leak a major injury that they knew of for sure?

Or would it be more likely they frame an injury that they know it isn't that serious to distract from the QB controversy that isn't there for them?

I guess maybe they could be softening the blow before the official announcement, but that sounds suspect to me.

Either way hope he is ready to go for the season.

@Catchafire

And JJ seems prone to injury.

Based on what? This is his first injury. He hasn’t left any games with an injury. He hasn’t missed any time with injury.

Meanwhile, Cade was injured in 2020 after taking over for Milton and was still “in the tent” with an injury in the loss to MSU on the miscommunication fumble.

Weird you would point out JJ as “injury prone” here.

Why would anyone at Michigan leak a fake injury?  That would serve no purpose.

I know some people don't like Balas, but I would be willing to bet decent money that he wouldn't throw this out there without a pretty high level of confidence.  He's been hinting for a while now that there was significant injury news coming.

2022 Michigan offense on paper looks to be one of the best in the past 2 decades or so!

Defending a B10 championship has a very nice ring to it and will require an all out effort each and every game to meet the lofty expectations that are upon this team

I would think there would be an open QB competition this fall if JJ is healthy. If that is the deal then I don’t think anyone is leaving this season. You don’t just walk onto another team and learn a new offense and take over a week before the opener.

Under this scenario a top QB recruit (Dante?) walks into a great depth chart situation.

JJ has already publicly said he has no plans to leave Michigan and loves it here. This topic gets  kind of old and beaten down.

My guess it was a sprain ligament or an RC micro tear that was minor enough that it could heal on its own but never healed up on its own. Now they are probably going to scope stitch. He should be fine by summer.

So Angelique confirmed that he’s banged up. Apparently it’s been a nagging injury going back before the bowl game, but no surgery. They are expecting him to rehab and not throw for a couple months though hoping it will heal.

Sucks, especially giving the magnitude of this offseason and the QB battle, but it could be worse I guess. I was hoping/expecting him to win the battle this year, but this definitely throws a wrench into things.

Balas's reporting has been much more reliable than he gets credit for.  Harbaugh was gone if MN offered.  Sainristill did move to DB.  McCarthy was first thought to need surgery.

And he still may.  It's not a tear or a micro tear as many here have speculated.  JJ has several more weeks of physical therapy and if not healed by then he will have shoulder surgically repaired - at which point he will be out 9-10 months (longer than normal time but needed because of the stress he puts on the shoulder as a QB).
