Rules question: showboating before crossing goal line

Submitted by LSA Aught One on October 17th, 2020 at 4:57 PM

Watching UCF vs Memphis.  UCF receiver made a nice catch and ran for an 85-yd TD.  He flashed a peace/deuces sign to the defender before he crossed the goal line.  I remember that kind of stuff being flagged in the past.  When/did that change?  I’m all for allowing celebration after the play.

Taunting/celebration before a TD is still supposed to be a penalty. Actually, within the last 5-10 years they changed the rule so that it could negate the TD. I'm guessing the officials just deemed the act not significant enough for a penalty.

I saw it as well. I am sure it technically should have been flagged, but let's be honest - as long as you don't make patently inflammatory gestures, or indeed streak across the goal line, you stand a chance of getting away with it.

In general I find these types of penalties to, usually, be flagrant violations to our humanness-pathetic, controlling adults lording over young people for actions that harm nobody. Bring back the joy of the athletic endeavor!!!

Poor coaching allows this stuff to happen. It should not be tolerated by the coaching staff. Refs should also be on top of this and throw the flag. The lack of reinforcement does not help.
