rules question on the portal

Submitted by tspoon on December 5th, 2023 at 7:23 AM

So if we had a high profile transfer in from the portal (just to throw a juicy name out there, let's say it's Domani Jackson), when is he eligible to play?  Is it once the new semester starts?  I.e., the title game?

Just daydreaming....

There's no rule preventing a player in the transfer portal from playing in the bowl game for his former team.  There is a rule preventing a player in the transfer portal from playing in the bowl game for his new team.  You can request a waiver, but it will get denied unless your new team is in the SEC.

No. A winter semester transfer can participate in Spring Practice. Rosters for post season games are determined by Fall semester eligibility. E.g., if a player graduates in December, they do not need to.be enrolled in January to participate.

These rules are sensible and apply to all sports with postseason play extending beyond a normative semester or quarter.

You can't transfer and then play for a new team within the same season. (Sorry for the ESPN link.)

If a player enters the portal now, can he transfer midseason and play for his new team?

No. It isn't like a professional sports trade. Players would need to wait to be eligible until the following season.

Domani Jackson is not in the transfer portal as far as I know.

OMG Shirtless:

Like with Hinton I like the idea of our near misses coming back into the fold.

Barner, Nugent, Henderson and Hausman (among other transfers) made a big difference this year.

I just wish there were some kind of free internet service where we could type in a question like this, and it would search the entire worldwide web for the answer, and display matching results.

I for one would use that a lot.
