Ronnie Bell comments on Shea Patterson

Submitted by Nervous Bird on October 13th, 2019 at 7:31 PM

Receiver Ronnie Bell, who was in the huddle, noted that the drive was an example of quarterback Shea Patterson’s leadership. The senior quarterback struggled throwing in swirling winds nearing 20 miles per hour, but was locked in to begin the drive.

“ ‘Just be the difference. Let’s make it happen,’ ” Bell recalled Patterson saying. “ ‘Trust in one another, trust in the coaches and let’s make it happen.’ ”

I believe! Beat Penn State!

It’s good to remember that these are just kids doing their best. We get to watch Michigan football every year. This is Shea’s only senior season. Nobody feels worse about how he’s played than him. Enjoy every Saturday and support the team. Go blue!

They are likely doing their best and I don't think it's right to criticize the person.  But this idea that they are just kids who should sheltered form criticism is not what we should be about.  They are young adults accepting benefits to play football and playing for people's whose livelihoods are on the line.  There is no reason you can't criticize their play when it doesn't live up to expectations just because they are young adults.  That kind of thinking that college students are kids is silly.  If it was a 21 year old working a job on his own who was not doing a good job at work his boss wouldn't hesitate to critique his work just because he's only 21.  I get there is a process of kids becoming adults and learning how to accept responsibility for their actions and learn to accept criticism and process failure.  But, generally that's what the transition from middle school to high school is for.  By the time young people graduate from high school they should be able to deal with criticism in positions where they are being compensating for their work.

You get tuition room and board in prison... and you don't work nearly as hard (okay the education  probably isn't world class either, but it's probably on par with what you'd get at teh osu).

Let's not act like these players are making bank and should thank us fans for the opportunity to play.

How often do you put your health and safety on the line for the entertainment of others..and for HIGHLY compensated coaches/bosses? How long would you let that go one before you felt a little jaded? And then you see all of the hanger-ons like the lame-ass, ask dumb questions and cash a check news reporters, announcers, and even the guys at the concessions who are getting PAID for their efforts...and like damn.

The tuition and board is GREAT if that's what's important to you....but if your dream is to go far with Football there is literally no other path than through the grind mill of the NCAA.

Back when I was in Uni and studying engineering I got a scholarship and board too. I also was able to make cash on the side doing whatever the fuck I wanted..and I could spend it on whatever the fuck I wanted. Had it been any other way I would have been pissed...as I suspect most would. But of course I wasn't as valuable a commodity as these guys and my efforts were not helping the Uni bring in shit loads of cash with which they could go on a spending spree for multimillionaire coaches,  world class tennis courts, swimming pools, and frisbee pitches :)

Dude, have you ever spoken to or watched college football players speak? 99% of them LOVE their situations. It is ludicrous alt-reality to read people who try to compare college athletes to the broken down proletariat. I'm totally for them making more money on their likeness etc. But that's not the same thing as thinking they are oppressed or something. That is nuts.

They in fact ARE really thankful they are where they are. They are also "making bank" through cash stipends. In addition to the free healthcare, free travel, free food 24/7 and adulation of the other students on campus. The idea that any football athlete is in ANY way in any hardship of any kind is ludicrous nonsense. It is pretty damn great to be a college athlete

Let's also NOT ACT like completely rich spoiled brats and say that $240,000 is pennies. That's a lot of fuckin money, plus other fringe benefits, and a top notch education from an incredible institution. Either way you look at it your argument sucks ass... either a Michigan education isn't worth jack shit, or it is worth A LOT and you're blowing smoke.

Your analogy to prison being free is also really fuckin' stupid, stop with that shit now! Despite OSUs lower educational standards, it's still an education; holy fuck you're an entitled brat. America is great because we PROVIDE education to everyone, and it's actually mandatory for grade school. Most people around the world would kill for these types of opportunities. That's why we're able to recruit from around the globe.

No one said they're makin' "bank" and only a complete brat would think that they're entitled to earn it.

Better analogy since you're a complete douche bag is... astronauts, they don't get paid all that much, they put their life on the line all the time, yet they chose the profession for the experience, the scientific value, and the chance to make history.

*Pull head out of rectum...it's a fuckin' game, they're not contributing to the betterment of society in any way, other than giving you a hard-on if they win!

$27,500 is more than a pittance. And that's for instate students ($15,558 for tuition and $11,996 for room and board). Out of state students pay $51,200 for tuition, that's over $63,000. (Tuition is from University website, room and board from an MLive article).

Figures an LS&A student would say stupid shit like this.

You go to school... TO LEARN! Fuckjoy! Damn, is Michigan really putting out this type of student now?! Far cry from the origins, mantra, and mission statements of past generations/alum

Live like peasants? At UofM? ROFLMAO

Wow, just fuckin wow...

If you really want to know hardship, find some of the social services students, who are on scholarship, barely surviving, that will NEVER make "bank". Or any of the med students that don't have mommy and daddy supporting them. Those are the real heroes at the University!

Those kids put in more intern hours than most people stay awake during their meager lives.

Not sure if M pushes med students like Hopkins, but it wasn't unusual to have 48 - 72hr intern shifts, then collapsing for a couple days after just to regenerate. Lives on the line? YES, every time you stick a needle in someone you don't know!

They are, just not at true market value. Their stipends and benefits are more than most graduate assistants get and GAs teach undergrads and engage in transformative research. Academe does athletes dirty and we gripe about it because we care about sports, but no one cares about GAs and adjuncts, who are getting similarly screwed.

This is like complaining because you tried to go to school to become an actor, you never made it, and now you're broke...

Tough titty said the kitty!

Maybe you should have gone to school for med, engineering, business, or even sports medicine...

You can criticize all you want! It’s a sport with winners and losers. Totally fair game. I’m just trying to say that we should all take a step back once in a while and understand that these are college kids who care more about winning than any of us could ever possibly imagine. Not to mention they’re grossly under compensated which is a whole other thing.

If some grown ass man with an outsized interest in the goings on of college age kids, like yourself, was criticizing the intelligence, will, determination, heart, etc. of your daughter who played college field hockey, I'm sure you'd feel the same way.

A high school senior is a kid, but a freshman in college is a fully grown adult. Got it.

There is an ocean of difference between being coachable and open to constructive criticism from his position and head coach, which he should be totally open to, and the drumbeat of endless negativity that swirls and redoubles on the internet.

How well could you do your job if you couldn't get online without seeing or hearing the endless micromanagement from everyone with a keyboard.

There is the old saying 'Never argue with someone who buys ink by the barrel'; but with the internet people aren't even limited by barrels. Electrons are nearly free. And it creates this pervasive, hyper critical environment.

So yeah. I'm going to cut the kid some slack.

It would never happen for a variety of good reasons; but I'd love for Brian to do a live UFR with someone like Shea next to him; where Shea could say 'Yeah, should have kept it, my bad' or 'You aren't seeing X, Y and Z in this situation and that's why I made this decision'.

I'm 100% sure that Jim is owning this, and he has said as much after games like Wisconsin: i.e. they got outcoached.

He knows he hired a green OC and I'm sure he realized that OC has further to go than he would have liked.  Sometimes you take a swing on a potential up and comer and you miss.  I think it was a needless risk to take when you have the money to hire a more proven guy but Harbaugh liked something about him. And maybe the potential will be realized eventually.

But I assure you JH and Gattis and Warriner are working hard to try to get the offense on track.  They just might not have the ability and if not, JH will need to make a change in the offseason.

Glad to see the kids speakimg well.of one another...a positive sign.

But with all due reapect Nervous Bird after 6 games I'm sort of not believing anymore.  I hope to be quoted in sheudenfreud threads at the end of the year as being wrong as hell.
