Rick Leach TD with Harbaugh celebrating in the end zone (Ufer on the call)

Submitted by Dave98 on

September 17, 1977 (Ann Arbor, MI) - Bob Ufer calls Rick Leach's 6-yard touchdown run against Duke in 1977. The score, Leach's 34th in his career, would be punctuated by a young Jim Harbaugh running into the end zone to celebrate with his favorite player growing up.

Even though I didn't get to ever hear him live whenever one of his replays is on the radio I find myself being drawn in without even realizing it.  He really had a way of describing the game that is unmatched.

I had the pleaure of working for his son for 5 years in Ann Arbor, great man.  I got to go to the Ufer cabin a few times, as I sat in a chair, I wondered about the conversations Bo and Bob Sr. had.

I love Bob, I have the CD's from the Ufer foundation. Gets me amped no matter what. It would have been amazing to hear one of his calls live and in person.

Always remember that ohio is still a four letter word!!!

9 yrs old, with my dad... (he took me to the non-conference games so that he could use his regular season games to entertain clients...sheesh).

I recall holding the ticket stub in my hand and I, at the time foolishly, thought that Duke was in the Big Ten.

Ahhh, those were the days.

as '77 was year #1 of holding season tickets (the 2015 season makes 39 years!).

Funny, though, I don't remember much of that game and certainly don't recall seeing a young Harbaugh on the field.  That might be because of our tradition back then of taking a "touchdown toke" every time Michigan scored a TD.  By the time Harbaugh got on the field in that shot, we were all taking a shot from our flasks and one of us was likely flicking the Bic .

Bob is a legend.  I still have my autographed copy of his first album (that's vinyl for you young-uns).  I wrote Bob a fan letter in 1977, and got the album in the mail as a response.  Unbelievable that he did that for a 12 year old kid.  Don Lund was his "color" man (like Ufer needed one), and my dad and I used to laugh as Don would try to stick in a comment, only to be steamrolled by Ufer.  Great man, great sportscaster...and about 50% of the reason I went to UM.

...just to +1.

Man, I'll be honest, this Harbaugh thing seems pretty incredible.  If it isn't some macho fairy tale for dudes, it certainly does seem far-fetched.  Some kid who was the son of a Michigan coach who coach with (arguably) our most legendary and well-known head coach, grew up to play at Michigan, and then comes back to coach at Michigan after a successful NFL & college/pro coaching career?  Insane.  I love it.
