Report: Tom Herman to Texas is ‘all but official’

Submitted by boliver46 on

Not sure how reliable Yardbarker is, so consider the source...

but something we've all speculated on - whether Tom Herman will get a big-time job - and where will it be?

Big rumor today is that Tom Herman to #Longhorns is "all but offical." Reliable sources saying what has been suspected for awhile now.

Short and sweet as I'm heading to a meeting - but...

DISCUSS!

***EDIT - seeing more than just Yardbarker reporting it - so guessing this puppy might have some legs.***

Cutcliffe and what he's done at Duke - but Herman has been the "sexy name" at the top of people's lists.  Besides that though, Cutcliffe is 62.  Herman is 41.

I don't think they can go wrong with either based on what else is out there.  Hungry coaches with innovative systems.

If this is true, good for Tom Herman and good for Texas.  I have to imagine they will be a top-10 program again within a year or two.

Sigh.  Chalk this up to other HC stories.

1. Saban is NOT taking the Alabama job, he loves his Dolphins job.

2. Urban Meyer had health issues that made him retire from UF.  (Actually this really is true...he was genetically prone to being seduced by hot coeds, it's called the Y chromosome, it inflicts approximately 50% of the human population.)

3. Petrino has never interviewed for other jobs when he was employed.  And, he never ever gave rides to anyone on his motorcycle.  (Insert that "Y chromosome bit here too.)

4. Oakland is still in play!!!

Where will Charlie Strong go?

The pickings are so slim out there for head coaches that he'll be one of the hottest prospects available . . . by getting fired.

I don't know....but if I had to guess, he would go somewhere with more relaxed expectations, somewhere where the prospects of winning immediately would be slim but could be potentially increased with the right kind of long-range plan - say, 10-15 years. The problem is that Chris Ash currently has the Rutgers job.

Lost a lot of respect for this guy if its true......his team has been so unprepared these last 2 weeks, and to sell-out on his players in the middle of the season is deplorable.

I've always liked Texas, seeing similarities between their program and ours and with no rivalry to interfere.  Like Michigan, Texas has a great town, iconic uniforms, a long history of football success, is a top academic institution in its home state, and is a public school.  And Mack Brown always reminded me of Lloyd Carr, in both positive (character) and negative (stubbornly conservative approach) ways.

So I hope this happens.  Also, I like the idea of Herman being at Texas since it might take him out of the Ohio State picture when Urban Meyer retires.  And finally, Herman seems like an OK guy, Buckeye roots notwithstanding.

I like this rumor the most because of this. Herman's a great coach, and I've always worried that whenever Urban finally steps down at OSU, Herman would be the obvious successor to keep the Death Star in Columbus fully operational. Ain't gonna happen if he's the coach at Texas.

And it's the most logical move for both sides. Herman's going to be Plan A for any major Power 5 team with a coaching vacancy, so it makes sense for Texas to lock him down now if they're certain they won't keep Strong. And if Herman wants to jump now to a blue-blood job, Texas is the best fit. He has roots going way back in Texas -- besides his current time at UH, he was a grad assistant coach at UT in 1999, and coached at Sam Houston St., Texas St., and Rice early in his career. He knows the state and can recruit all the talent he needs at UT without ever crossing the Texas border.

The funny thing is, Herman doesn't even have much in the way of Buckeye roots; he only coached there for three years, though we immediately think of his time there since it was his springboard to the head coaching ranks. Ironically enough, Bo actually coached at OSU for about twice as long, and Moeller played there...

For Charlie Strong. Seemed a bit like a RichRod situation there in terms of not connecting with the fanbase and the big money folks at Texas. He'll land on his feet again.

I think Strong has done a good job of coming in and reshaping the culture of the program, and the recruiting was really starting to take off. However, you can't be a defensive guy and be this putrid on defense, even by Big 12 standards, in year three. His inability to build a functional defense even with Texas' relative youth has been shocking.

If true, Houston would be a great job for Fleck if he wants to step up in competition while avoiding the dregs of Purdue.

it could make for a great storyline when OSU & Texas play again in 2022 & 2023.  Obvious caveats apply to Herman succeeding at Texas, and Urban not succumbing to Harbaugh related health issues.
