Report: Tom Herman to Texas is ‘all but official’

Submitted by boliver46 on

Not sure how reliable Yardbarker is, so consider the source...

but something we've all speculated on - whether Tom Herman will get a big-time job - and where will it be?

Big rumor today is that Tom Herman to #Longhorns is "all but offical." Reliable sources saying what has been suspected for awhile now.

Short and sweet as I'm heading to a meeting - but...

DISCUSS!

***EDIT - seeing more than just Yardbarker reporting it - so guessing this puppy might have some legs.***

If this is true, it's pretty unprofessional of both Texas and Herman to go behind Charlie Strong's back like that. Having said that, I doubt it's true. How would it benefit Herman to talk to Texas before his season is over? As a guy who will likely have three or four big name programs vying for his services come December, what would he stand to lose by telling Texas to wait?

How would it benefit the coach of Houston to talk to Texas?  Because Texas might offer him a job, that's why.  One would never turn down Texas to stay at Houston. And as for other major programs that may come calling, Herman surely would recognize that none of those may pan out or that Texas might be his preferred option in any case.  If he gets Texas and they give him what he wants, why hold out to see what other schools do?

I don't.

I know he's just a kid, but he (or at least his parents) should've been smart enough to realize that Herman was never going to be a lifer at Houston. That place was just going to be a stop gap until Texas or LSU came calling. If Herman lasted longer than 2-3 years there, it wasn't going to be for a good reason.

He didn't make a bad choice, per se, to go to Houston. But he made his bed. Time to sleep in it.

Tom Herman's stock is still high right now.  In another four weeks, probably not.

Thing is, Houston football is not performing to expectations.

They lost to Navy by 6, and then decisively to SMU on the road.

They have to play UCF (4-3) this week followed by Louisville (6-1) and @ Memphis (5-2).

I remember after their Oklahoma win that a lot of people were crapping on Houston Cougars football for their "weak" schedule.

Well, their schedule is a lot of things, but "weak" ain't one of them.

I'm not saying Herman will fail at Texas, but we've basically seen 1.5 years of him as an HC and last year they rode a crazy turnover margin (+1.5 a game) to a good year.  This season, they are slightly negative and have been pushed around defensively by a couple of teams, even in wins.  He might be a great coach, or he might have a bit of magic that first year and this is more a steady-state for him.  Maybe he'll be a crack recruiter, but Strong hasn't been too bad at Texas in that regard.  This just feels like a foregone conclusion based on expectations that tangible proof Herman would be demonstrably better than Strong as a coach.  Now, as someone who the Texas fans and boosters would accept and rally behind, then obviously Strong needs to be gone.

Personally, I think its tacky to talk about who will be the new coach at Texaś. I understand fans arent happy but they need to show some class and wait until the season is nearly over. Heś no worse than Notre Dames coach who threw his Defensive Coordinator under the bus in order to take the attention away from the fact that he ultimately makes the decisions for his team. Theyre still losing, to mediocre teams.  I dont think Houston has a record of winning for long enough and Herman doesnt  have the resume to afford him that high profile of job. Just saying, what has he done that was really so great????

Texas could make a run at Les Miles but without a doubt Strong is out at the end of the season. Miles has a proven record of success at the college level and with a qb that can actually play, I feel like he could take Texas far. If miles decides to not go to Texas then I bekuve Herman should be next on the list. He is known by instate recruits and has shown he knows how to lead a program. If Herman leaves Texas, there is no way PJ Fleck takes the job at least for another year or two. According to some reports, Fleck has mentioned that he has unfinished business at Western. I believe he stays until he gets the program where he wants it and finds a successor who can lead the program like he did. Once he decides to leave western, he could make a move to a big ten school, possibly even Michigan state. Datonio is gone after this year or next because of terrible on field playing and his lack of ability to recruit multiple 4 and 5 star talented players. Dantonios time is limited in East Lansing and look for him to continue his coaching elsewhere either in the SEC or possibly the ACC. I can't see him going to a big 12 school as their play style out west, mostly spread offense that puts up lots of points with hardly any defense. The ACC could also be a viable option for him if a spot becomes available. The best fit I see for him in the SEC is Florida.
