Report: JB's contract will now include a rolling extension

Submitted by Human Torpedo on

Translation: A new year will be automatically be added to his contract annually in addition to a two year extension currently being made thru 2023. Sounds like a lifer to me. Doesn't look like asked us to break the bank either. His salary will probably only go up to $4 million according to this report

Just give him a lifetime contract and name the court after him and be done with it.

I feel like naming something after someone who hasn't retired yet is tacky, but maybe that's just me.

I've never liked the Izzone because of that. Wait until someone finishes their career before you name something after them. Because what if they end up being involved in a sexual assault scandal and disgrace themselves... then you gotta make a public change of whatever you named.

It's Coach K court in Durham.  There are other examples.  But yeah, I'd generally agree with your point-- wait until they retire.

Technically, someone can tarnish/scandal/disgrace themselves after their career ends, too.  Or something can come out after they're dead, for that matter.  I don't think we have to worry about any of that with JB, though.

So it really wasn’t about leverage. Can’t blame him for at least entertaining the idea of coaching in the NBA. But I still think this is the best for all parties involved.

Will be interesting to see if any assistant coach contracts change.

Unless his buyout has also increased I don’t see how this means he sticks around til he retires. The extra year is really so he can continue to recruit otherwise if he gets down to 3, 2, or 1 year left nobody is coming. He could still bolt for the NBA anytime so really this doesn’t mean that much.

A buyout has rarely stopped major college or pro teams from going after the coaches they want. Regardless, this was probably a unique opportunity (granted, I don't think the Pistons would've actually hired him) given that it would have allowed him to not uproot his family, and I don't recall his name being legitimately attached to an NBA search before. Beilein is already 65, it's going to be far less likely he gets NBA interest as he ages than the converse.

I just hope this includes some raises for his assistants. Especially Yaklich.

I'd be foolish to think Yaklich will stick around here forever, but at least make it more difficult for him to want to leave.

I actually think he'd be a good NBA coach, and I'd love to see him work with my favorite player on my favorite team (Nikola Jokic)

But if the NBA comes for him again, they are dead to me.

A person close to the situation told me that JB's plans for his post UM career was an important factor in his willingness to talk to Pistons -- perhaps a front office position once he retires from UM.

You don't have to name the court after JB just because he is our best ever coach. That should be reserved for iconic coaches.  Like it or not he isn't at that level

Good. He deserves it. Now work on the assistants and get them on par with the rest of the big boys in our conference so we can keep them a few more years before we need to find new ones.
