Recruiting bits and a name to know...

Cincinnati (OH) Roger Bacon running back Corey Kiner is going to announce his commitment next Monday. Michigan was in his top 10, and there was a bit of confidence at one point, but lately it sounds like Cincinnati and Louisville are the frontrunners. I would be happy if Michigan could get a 1-2 punch of Kiner and Donovan Edwards in the 2021 class. Kiner gives me an Edwin Baker vibe, and I know Baker wasn't a superstar, but he was a very productive running back for MSU who turned into a 7th rounder.

Flower Mound (TX) Marcus quarterback Garrett Nussmeier committed to LSU last week. If that name sounds familiar, he's the son of former Michigan offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier, who's currently the Dallas Cowboys QB coach. Garrett is a 4-star, the #7 pro-style quarterback, and #104 overall. Here are his highlights (LINK).

Fresno (CA) Central East receiver Xavier Worthy (4-star, #39 WR, #208 overall) has been offered by Alabama and Georgia in the past few days. Michigan has the lone crystal ball right now, but I don't know if these new offers will change things up at all.

Kalamazoo (MI) Central athlete Cincear Lewis (class of 2022) has been picking up some offers lately. Right now he's a 247 Sports 3-star and the #28 safety. Michigan doesn't really recruit Kalamazoo a ton, but you might want to keep your eye on Lewis. He's listed anywhere from 6'2", 185 to 6'4", 180. Ultimately, I don't think he'll be a safety when it's all said and done; he's a little too heavy footed to play on the back end, and he really likes to be physical. Cincinnati, Indiana, Kentucky, and West Virginia have already offered. Here are some highlights (LINK).

I really hope Michigan can get Xavier Worthy. Dude can absolutely fly and he would fit speed in space so well. Magnus what do you think of Michigan’s other RB targets. Seems like they’re pursuing Prophet Brown heavily and I saw 247 had a recent article about Michigan pursuing Al-Shadee Salaam (Rutgers commit).

Really disappointed about Kiner. At one time we led for him. We gotta get top players from that state.

Not sure why Devotee is getting negged for stating the obvious.  Michigan getting commits from the top talent in the state of Ohio rather than the mid-tier talent would be in Michigan's best interest.

It's a shame Kiner is most likely going elsewhere.  If Michigan seals the deal with Donovan Edwards and grabs a talent like Prophet Brown, I think we'll survive.  Brown looks like Chris Evans and we could use those types of RB's in the Speed In Space offense.

Not hard to figure out the tendency of the Ohio recruit wants to win the Game, far more, than the Massachusetts recruit, all else equal....   far more on the line in their lives.

It's funny though, as soon as Urban Meyer took OSU's recruiting national, the amount of Ohio players has been decreasing and they're just getting better. Recruiting players from Ohio is not some secret sauce that will beat OSU

If Kiner does end up at Cincinnati or Louisville as Magnus suggests, or LSU as suggested below, this is one of the times I truly believe there is a good reason he will not be signing with Michigan. Different reasons depending on the choice, but a justifiable reason regardless.

Steve Lorenz put a crystal ball in for Kiner to LSU.

Allen Trieu put in a crystal ball for Tyler Mclaurin to Michigan, 3* LB from Illinois.

Btw Sam Webb mentioned on 247 that Michigan is taking 2-3 more LBs.  On top of the what, 5 we took last year?  There is little doubt in my mind Don Brown is changing his defense to a 3-3-5 base.  All of the safties/vipers/hybrid guys last year, the SDE DL's, and the lack of DTs.

Yeah, I think exactly something like that.

I re-watched the Wisconsin game because I'm a helpless fool.  (Summary: we deserved to lose badly but maybe wasn't as awful as it seemed - Mason fumble, terrible call on Bell reception overturned, unlucky deflected ball interception, and Coan making two incredible plays (the perfect throw over Ambry Thomas and an unbelievable foot-plant-in-the-ground scramble touchdown when Hutchinson had him dead to rights for a sack) and it could have been closer... also McGrone was starting then)

They will have to solve the problem of offensive lineman simply turning them and sealing them.  Wisconsin did it most of the day with relative ease.  I think that's the reason for all the LBs, including old school pluggers last year and Phinney this.

Doesn't a 3-3-5 defense have to be overly aggressive to make up for the lack of size and guys upfront?

If this is where Don is going, it would seem it would be in Michigan's best interest to recruit elite Defensive Lineman and Secondary players.  If the defense is going to continue to be aggressive the secondary is going to be stuck on an island.

Gary Patterson runs/ran the 4-2-5 and had really good success.  With OSU and Wisconsin being such dominant running scheme teams, wouldn't it be in Michigan's best interest to run a defense off of the 4-2-5 formation to add more beef upfront?  The thought of Wisky's and OSU's big OLine getting to the second level and destroying our LB's scares me to death.

That wasn't even a troll comment.  Removing one interior DLine and allowing an OLineman a free pass to clobber an LB that he outweighs by 60-80 lbs is not a recipe for success.

I was asking for expert opinion on the matter so I can understand the reasoning for it. I figured you were that expert, but apparently, I was wrong.

Thanks for being a complete douchebag.

Nobody on a message board is an expert.  Magnus is very good though.

Come on, you're complaining all day in every thread, saying Harbaugh/this team/Michigan program can't cut it and "maybe never will again... (wisps of dread)".  It's not subtle.

It doesn't mean you couldn't give your thoughts on the matter.  It would have been a very blog thing to do.  Magnus could have responded in your place.  It was a thought-provoking question while expressing my concerns.

As for my thoughts on Harbaugh and his staff...  We've been waiting for 5 years for something meaningful to happen to this program.  And yet, we're still waiting and apparently, we're going to be waiting for a while.  Michigan appears to be getting further and further away from what the goal of the program should be.  The majority of people wish Harbaugh the best.  I hope it happens.  I just don't see it.  The consensus seems to make excuses and then being content with what we have when Michigan falls short.

The unpopular opinion is not necessarily trolling.

When good things happen, we should praise it.  When bad things happen we should be able to discuss it.  Unfortunately, there hasn't been much to praise of late.

Sorry to be insulting, but it's just such poor view that it seems like concern trolling.  Harbaugh took the program from its lowest level ever, and returned it to it's historical 9-3 / 10-2 level almost immediately.  This was a monumental task, and he's done an excellent job.

He has not been as good as we hoped, partly because those expectations were probably unrealistic given the state of the program he took over, partly because of really bad luck, and partly because he hasn't been an Urban Meyer-level coach, at least thus far.

Meanwhile OSU built on Tressel to Meyer to Day, 20 years of increasing football excellence.  They're too far away right now, to their credit, to expect Michigan to be at their level.  It will take time.  And a QB.  Michigan wins 2016 Iowa, 2016 OSU, 2016 FSU, 2017 OSU, 2019 PSU and some other games with a top level QB.  Yes it's Harbaugh's job to get one.  I think they will soon.

Suggestion: Familiarize yourself with the equation for momentum.

p = m * v

Do you suppose that linebacker (who may weigh 240+) will be sitting still when the burly OL gets to him? It's more likely that the linebacker (knowing where he's going) will be traveling a bit faster than the 300-pound OL. His "v" doesn't need to be that high to win the collision. Wisconsin does this all the time with their 3-4.

Does anybody else feel like we may be making up ground on Garrett Dellinger? I think he’s slowly starting to build a relationship with Warriner and I think the longer his recruitment goes on the better for us. I don’t know though that’s just what I think. I could be totally reading the situation wrong.
