Reactions to the ESPN 30 for 30 on the 1997 Heisman Race

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on December 9th, 2023 at 10:23 PM

Like many of you, I just got done watching the ESPN documentary on "The Great Heisman Race of 1997." Some reactions:

- I love Charles even more now and am even more convinced he deserved it.

- Interesting filmmaking technique - they didn't have a single current interview. They did the entire doc with old footage and news clips. Overall, I thought it was good. Reminded me of so much stuff I'd forgotten - not just Michigan stuff, but everything happening in college football at the time.

- The documentary was mostly about how Peyton Manning lost it than anything else. Trying to be objective, though, I thought they gave Charles his due. Damn, that guy was great.

- Disappointing that they totally glossed over Fulmer screwing us over and Scott Frost's whining in the coaches' poll. Didn't mention any of it. They just mentioned how it ended up a split national championship.

- I totally would not have guessed that Kirk Herbstreit was on ESPN at that time. My sense of historical time is waaaaaay off.

- Fuck Tennessee.

I remember that night - the press in Yost were actually huddled around a TV in that right corner watching the Heisman ceremony on a TV. They erupted in cheers when he was announced as the winner, and when word filtered around, the crowd started a "Charles Woodson" chant.

Pretty sure M blew out whomever they were playing that night,  but even if they didn't,  that whole night was a big win for the Wolverines.

I actually really enjoyed the vintage content angle a lot. Being a senior that year I was too close to it and went to every home game to consume much outside of what was going on in Ann Arbor. So to be able to see so much of the other candidates’ high and lowlights was new and interesting for me.

That whole season was just so special for me and all of my friends. That rose bowl was my first time west of Chicago, and now I’ve lived in California since 2005. I still have grass turf sealed in Mitch’s mugs from the osu and rose bowl games.

coincidentally during the summer of 1998 Leaf joined Woodson at the harbaugh celebrity golf outing in AA. My then gf was a bartender at scorekeepers and she said he tipped the staff generously, which still surprises me.

The family and I were driving back to Ohio through Tennessee on I75 the night of the ‘97 Heisman trophy announcement. Ohhhh Nelly…the local sport radio stations were in full blown meltdown over Woodson winning and the so called injustice delt Manning. Listening to the locals literally scream, cry and moan over the announcement was just another great memory from that 97 〽️ team.

I will say what no one else says because for all these years it is hard to ignore the big pictire. I have always thought part of the Tenn fan meltdown was partially (or more than partially) racist. Their white super hero with a deep southern accent, who had a birthright to the Heisman to crown his greatness, loses to a black guy from the north. Of course they couldn’t handle that, it insulted their sense of up and down, good versus bad, what things are supposed to be.

Did anyone notice the Southern fans at games with at least TWO props hanging someone in effagy? I mean… Southern culture at its finest

There’s really no doubt about this and if anything you’re being modest about it. These people have a (horribly ugly) statue of Nathan Bedford Forrest, a notorious terrorist and seditionist, in their capital city. If you find a TN fan that isn’t racist, that’s the exception to the rule. Maybe that’s changed in the last 20 some odd years, but I doubt it… just earlier this year one of the Nashville country stars put out a music video low-key (just obvious enough without being too obvious) celebrating the site of a lynching and mob justice. It was quite popular among the bitter folk.

Statue’s been down for years.

Admittedly WAY too late and the damn thing was ugly as sin, but it was on land owned by his descendants and there wasn’t much anyone could do about it.  It’s not like it was some sort of bit of civic pride, just a horribly embarrassing and ugly statue that has, thankfully, been taken down.

Glad to hear that, glad it’s been taken down. Hopefully that was met with less manufactured outrage and controversy than other recent removal of monuments honoring seditionists and terrorist post-Reconstruction southern governments. And my language was probably too broad and sweeping but point being, the planter cartel mastered the art of cultivating grievances to divide people and it is still a big part of how people indoctrinated that way engage with the world, so we should definitely expect that to be a factor in this whole thing.

I saw that. It just goes to show that they think hanging anyone is an ok display of hate or dismay.  And in fact carries an extra level of hate for Manning… as if treating him as one of “those people we used to hang.”

Would anyone here even think for a nanosecond if going to a game with a prop of hanging Day or MHJ? Hell no   (and if anyone would, get the eff out if here, you are not among friends.)

Does this mean that someone here should hesitate to attend a game with a hanged effigy of Day or MHJ, or that they should not hesitate?  If you think that they should not, then " get the eff out if here, you are not among friends."

I have rooted against both Tennessee and Manning ever since that travesty.  Nebraska was undefeated only because of an illegally kicked ball that was caught for a TD.  They did not deserve consideration.  Fuck Fullmer.

Not to mention that both teams played Colorado, and while Michigan destroyed them (27-3) Nebraska barely escaped (27-24).

The case for Nebraska - aside from getting Osborne a retirement gift - was that they beat #3 Tennessee.  But UT had nothing to play for once we won our game the day before (they needed us to lose to have a shot at #1), and rolled over.

Herbstreit joined ESPN almost out of university. He would have graduated from OSU in 1993 (?) and I am sure his first year on ESPN was 1996. That's when I first remember him doing what at the time would have been the second-tier games.

GameDay was a pretty sedate affair in the 90s, even for the first few years of the campus locations. It was cool if they were coming, but I don't really remember it being the production it is today. Kirk was there from the beginning, but he hadn't really built the Herbie persona yet. The whole thing blew up into the traveling circus it is today by the early 2000s. Now it's almost a parody of itself.

I seem to recall there was also a second-tier GameDay-esque pregame show on (IIRC) ESPN2 (?), I remember them doing broadcasts from the little porch wrapping around Crisler near the tunnel?

GameDay started in the mid 80's.  I started watching in the early 90's when I had access to cable.  My asshole landlord wouldn't let them install it because I think he wanted a kickback.  As someone said above, ESPN used to be good and the show was an hour and I would watch it regularly before the game started at noon.  Now it's just TMZ sports for SEC fans.

He won by overcoming the voting bias towards offense, by having played both sides of ball plus scoring TDs on punt returns.    It's the only way for a defensive player to win. Had Sainrisitl also had Wilsons numbers on offense and returned punts, and he would be on the list.

The comment at the end about how 3/4 of the finalist are 1st ballot hall of famers (an each can make an argument for being one of the best at their position all time) made Ryan Leaf look pretty out of place lol.

I did think that was rough for Leaf. He was not out of place at that time. He had the talent. But obviously he had other issues that got in the way and the other three are NFL all-timers and he's a washout. It's probably true that he's mostly remembered because he was part of the Charles Woodson story.

It was good that they showed him being the #2 pick in the draft right behind Peyton. Also, I liked the scene when they were in New York and Woodson and Moss were walking around I think the Rockefeller Center and then Leaf shows up behind them and puts his arms around them to pose for the camera. One guy was conspicuously absent...

I think Leaf is remembered more than, say, Tim Couch, who also featured briefly in the documentary. Or JaMarcus Russell.

I'm sure part of it is his very public troubles (and the "Don't talk to me, alright?!" blowup) but I also think a large part of it is that he was in this particular Heisman race. Although honestly it's probably more about Manning than Woodson, and the belief by some that Leaf should have been the #1 pick.

I'll never forget sitting in my parent's family room watching it from the floor. My sports/Michigan crazy 12 year old mind wanted Charles to win so bad but I felt like Manning would ultimately win just because he was a QB. I'll never forget the feeling of hearing, "From Michigan". Every young sports fan should be able to experience something like that. They all don't which is why I feel incredibly fortunate.

I don’t regret watching it, but I found it unsatisfying. Others have commented that there were no current interviews, which would have definitely strengthened the final product, but I thought the editors whiffed on the narrative, which they took to be “It was Peyton Manning’s to lose.” That’s actually an interesting narrative, but theyy didn’t effectively communicate it, with the result that they undersold what Woodson achieved. There was way too much emphasis on what the talking heads at that time were saying and not a good examination of what the players were actually doing. Too much off-field stuff, and not enough on-field.

But it was a remarkable class. Go back and look at the lists of Heisman finalists since 1982 (https://www.sportskeeda.com/college-football/list-of-heisman-trophy-finalists-year-by-year) and you can’t help but be struck by how many of them had negligible pro careers, much less Hall of Fame ones. By my count the list has 12 HoFers, 3 of whom were in that ‘97 class. Granted, more will be joining, but that was an exceptionally competitive year.

I was completely satisfied but I'm sensing I'm the only one. I can't argue with everyone's critique, though, that a completely different approach that looks back on it through today's perspective could be significantly better. Maybe Netflix will try it at some point.

The only thing I would say in the defense of the way they did it is that you can't mess it up. High floor, low ceiling. The other way, to do it really well, probably takes actual talent.

It’s hard for me to say who has been more butthurt by mannings failures to overcome his poor big game play: Tennessee fans or Indianapolis Colts fans. In 97-98 I didn’t live anywhere near Tennessee or Michigan, and the internet wasn’t as widely used (plus no social media). I’ve lived in Indiana since 2005 though and being surrounded by colts fans who still cannot accept that deflategate was pure bs, or Brady’s success over such a long career that has way overshadowed what Manning did in the nfl has me leaning towards towards them over Tennessee fans.

97 was one of the few years I know of over the decades I’ve been following college football that the Heisman trophy actually got it right. Most years it’s been the best player on one of the best teams, but not necessarily THE best player in CFB.

What an awesome season!

Woodson’s season was a complete buildup and crescendo to The Game!  Every game Woodson changed the game!   He made plays on both sides of the ball. With each game from The start of the season Michigan was not expected to win the Big Ten or contend for the National Championship.  Preseason article titles What’s Wrong with Michigan?,  laid out the talent and approach.  Talked about beating top ten teams but blowing games clearly should be winning under Carr.

Tennessee was supposed to contend for the sec title with Florida and as usual the winner of that game would win the sec east and likely sec champ.  But Manning’s senior season was more a victory lap than statement season.  Lost to Florida, had a couple very underwhelming games including late in the season against Vandy where he went 12-27 for 159yds as Woodson dominated against osu!  This was the difference imo.  While Manning had some monster games he didn’t have them against Florida in losses and the 8-25 for 126yds mid season against South Carolina really opened the door to other candidates!!!  The fact is most thought Peyton Manning had already earned the Heisman as a career award.  While ESPN was gaining massive momentum in its cf gameday show was talking about several candidates.

ESPN Gameday appeared at 6 Michigan games that season for its pregame and post game shows.  Judgement Day changed everything for Michigan and Woodson!!   Woodson scoring td and locking down another future nfl receiver as well as an absolute domination of Penn State left the game day crew talking about Woodson for the Heisman and the discussion of best offensive player or best player in the game….  That final game versus Ohio state where Woodson changed the game setting up the first td for Michigan on a huge reception taking the ball to the redzone then the punt return for a td and then an interception in the end zone had Woodsons stamp on the biggest game of the regular season again, while Peyton Mannint had a subpar performance against Vandy really was the difference!

I loved the little '97 styled internet message board motif they came up with. That was some nice craftsmanship. I think Mgoblog uses version 2 of that software (OOF).

Saw it today and liked it.

One thing that an ESPN exec I know mentioned to me that I think might be relevant to the decision to use footage only: apparently it has become very hard to do these documentaries independently from the athletes, who now want to have co-producing credit or even shared revenue through their own production companies. One way to avoid that is to do what was done here, though I don’t know for a fact that is why it ended up that way.
