Quinn Nordin: What happened between HS and Michigan?

Submitted by othernel on August 8th, 2019 at 2:06 PM

With the season approaching, I've caught a couple of the games from last season on BTN. It reminded me how many great weapons we have returning on offense this year and how insane our D was. But the one thing I keep noticing is Quinn Nordin.

In almost every game, his misses are terrible, and kicks he does make look like knuckleballs that somehow found the right side of the uprights. There doesn't seem to be any preciseness or tight spin at all.

Legitimate question: how was the #1 kicking recruit in the entire country? Was he exceptional and just developed the yips in Ann Arbor? Was all the hype based off his leg strength and not off his accuracy?

I was thinking chronic masturbation. It must be hard to kick a field goal after you've rubbed your wang raw.

Honestly, I think the OP is pretty lame for calling out Nordin specifically. The history of college football is filled with dudes who looked awesome in HS and looked less than awesome in college. How many underwhelming players has Michigan had in the last 10 years?

That's like calling tooth-brushing a "chronic" activity. It's just something you do for daily maintenance, not a disease. And it's not that hard to perform physical functions after rubbing your wang raw. A friend told me.

It's certainly the yips.  He was lights out to start the '17 season, but then he started becoming unreliable for kicks in the 30-40 yard range, and even missed some XPs.  It's all mental.  You hate to see it, but if he can't get over it, he cannot be the kicker.

Exactly.  Kicking is HIGHLY mental. It requires the unique ability to stay loose and relaxed under a lot of pressure.  That has nothing to do with physical ability and it's impossible to know if someone has that ability coming out of HS.

It's like shooting FTs or putting.  You can do it perfectly a million times in practice (or in HS) and then get in front of 100,000+ with something on the line and get the yips even if you're super talented.

Glad I scrolled down. I was about to post the same Yogi-ism.

We have seen the physical talent, so it's probably a brain thing. If the 100,000 watching live and the millions on TV get in your head...  I'm not sure how you exorcise that.

To paraphrase Crash Davis; don't think, just kick.

I remember seeing him in the spring game hit one of the most gorgeous field goals I’ve seen a college kid make. Would have been good from over 60 and I thought we really had something with him.

Then the season rolled around and he looked like a bad high school kicker. To say he developed the yips would be a severe understatement.
