Question for the board: Does Deion Sanders have any cache with teenagers?

Submitted by ldevon1 on September 22nd, 2020 at 3:04 PM

He was hired by Jackson St as the new head coach and Sam brought it up this morning. None of these kids have seen anything other than YouTube videos about Primetime. He immediately offered a 5 star D tackle out of Lousiana and the kid says he interested. Jackson St is an HBC.

So you don't like a boisterous Black football player, but you do like hard-working nose-to-the-grindstone Black football players. I'm sure there's not any reason why you are just lazily classing Black football players according to. . . whether you approve of them or their styles. That's what racist message board inanity is for.

I had no idea that Prime Time was even coaching anywhere.   I have to hand it to Jackson St - that's a splashy hire.  There's no doubt he has a font of football knowledge, but it will be interesting to see if that translates well to coaching.   I have no idea if the Prime Time cachet moves the needle from a recruiting perspective, but Deion has been very visible on various NFL outlets after his retirement.  He's a known commodity for those who watch the NFL.  I won't be surprised at all if he successfully lures some bigger talent than a typical Jackson St. recruiting class.

College football is half X's and O's half salesmanship. Deion is obviously charismatic and a great sound bite. You add in to the fact that everyone of these kids dads will be excited to meet prime and he could see success. Also Makur Maker committing to an HBCU is huge if that becomes a trend Deion will be in the drivers seat for a lot of high profile recruits.

Sounds like his coaching staff will also have some big time names:

Terrell Owens - WR Coach

Warren Sapp - Dline Coach

Not joking.

Warren Sapp was one of the best defensive linemen I’ve seen play the game. Ever. You could double and triple team the guy and it still wouldn’t matter. He’d find a way to blow past you and take your QB down.

I don’t know how good a coach he is, but I damn well know for sure that he’s not the kind of guy you want as a role model to your sons. So him being a coach, to me, is a bit iffy.

Oh c'mon people, this was funny!

Seriously though, until he actually lands someone good, I'm skeptical.  Juwan Howard has gotten a bunch of guys "interested" and still hasn't been able to land a 5 star, and Michigan is a school that has gone to the national title game twice in the past decade.

Just because someone wasn't alive for his playing career doesn't mean they can't idolize him or want to play for him.

If I were a RB and Barry Sanders was the head coach of a school and offered, I would definitely be interested.

The same thing is going on with Michigan basketball right now. None of these recruits were alive for Juwan's college career or his prime NBA career, but it still helps with recruiting.

So to answer your question, yes.

He'll have the ear of the kids, for sure. However, I highly doubt he'll pull in many 4-5 star recruits. When a recruit visits The Big House, LSU, Oklahoma, etc... selling them on attending a small school in a small town with less than stellar facilities - and only local tv coverage - will be a task too great.

He may get a player or two, but football needs a player or two at each position group.

A girl walks into a men’s bathroom and it’s considered ‘hot’.

A guy walks into a women’s bathroom and he’s called a ‘pervert’.

Great hire for Jackson State! At minimum, it brings a lot of positive buzz to the program. At maximum, maybe it's the start of a cool resurgence for HBCU institutions!
