Question about helmet stickers

Submitted by trueblue262 on
I noticed when watching the game that Kalis had what appeared to be a sticker less helmet.
Do they have a choice whether to put the stickers on? I would have to think that he has earned atleast a few? Maybe not......I thought he played a great game so maybe next week they'll appear! Thoughts?

I will also use this opportunity to say I still really dislike the helmet stickers and think they do their best to ruin the whole aesthetic of the helmet.

I liked the mock-up thin block M that was shared here previously.

With the current design, to try and clean things up I would say have an inverse (Blue background) that you trade 10 Maize for, or whatever)  Then you keep the number of bright stickers to a maximum of 9 and having a helmet full of the Blue stickers would be quite the achievement.

I wasn't a fan of those. I feel that we overuse the block M already. It's fine and all, but it doesn't need to be the only logo we ever use. The snarling wolverine is unique. And I love that there are two versions: one for the left side and one for the right side. They just shouldn't be as big.

And think smaller ones is a reasonable middle ground between the sticker factions. I love the stickers: they are a visible manifestation of the kind of meritocracy Harbaugh is building. But at this rate these guys are going to have the entire helmet filled with them, which is too much clutter, and in a way cheapens the value of the award itself.

My wife does not interfere with my Michigan habit, but she is not an active CFB fan.  While watching the game yesterday, she came into the room and watched for a couple of minutes.

It must have been the first time she's done that in a while because she said "Eeew.  Helmet stickers on Michigan's helmets?  They look awful.  Do you all think you are Ohio State?"

I explained that our new coach liked them because that's how they looked when he was a kid.  And since he has us winning again, as long as he likes them, we're going to have them.

She wasn't buying it and said they still look awful, like a high school helmet.

So FWIW, there's a viewpoint from a disinterested observer.

I too dislike the helmet stickers. They really distract from the beauty and uniqueness of the helmet. It's like putting 24" rims on a Bugatti. I would rather them leave the helmet alone and do an alternate pant or jersey. Not a Dave Brandon alternate, but maybe all navy.. Just leave the helmet alone.

and, as everybody knows, purple light scatters more. That, in turn, makes them invisible from more than 20 rows up or higher Where are your seats?

I think that Harbaugh himself hinted that the primary motivation for the return of the stickers was as another tangible aspect of the environment of competition that he fosters, and part of that is definitely team goals. From the tone of the interview, as I recall, if you "grade out" (his words) on something in a game or in practice (and in other situations), you get one.

The problem is Harbaugh is more generous than Bo and Mo were and secondly the angle of the helmet stripes hog too much room on the helmet. Need to look at UM helmets from late 70s. They had more space for helmet stickers. And the stripes and wings looked more aggressive.

No you don't. They were never put down the middle of the helmet. After the sides were full that was it.

The new equipment staff is spacing these things out completely wrong and totally inconsistently. When you look at Peppers' helmet, it's like a 5 year old just started putting them wherever they wanted.

Are we really going to bitch about the placement of fucking stickers? Jim can put pictures of dicks on the helmet and I wouldn't give 2 shits because he's Jim Harbaugh. It's like bitching at Bo because he built an indoor practice facility in the midwest and no other school was doing it or Michigan didn't do it before. THEY'RE STICKERS and we're winning games.

Now that Peppers and others have crossed the Rubicon by putting stickers between the stripes, what happens when they fill that space? Stickers on the stripes? Stickers on the wings? The mind revolts at the thought.

I wonder what kind of reward a player will get for being the first to completely fill all available helmet real estate with stickers. Maybe there's some kind of "club" for those who fill their helmets kind of like the Ball Hawk sweatshirts Durking gives for intereceptions. It just feels like there has to be something because... Maybe a dumb question; don't these things get refinished quite regularly? Like I thought I saw a ND feature that showed how they get their helmets repainted for every game- I'm assuming Michigan's equipment gets similar treatment. Or suppose they break, does someone sit there and replace each sticker before every game?

I think they do get reconditioned to some degree after every game. Strangely, I was thinking about this during the game when they showed a few close ups of the helmets...it looks like there is a gloss over the stickers. So if they were to put more stickers on, they'd have to put another coat of gloss on top? Or perhaps the helmets are totally stripped and repainted/re-stickered after every game? This would be a full time job! Then I thought about the templates that they might use, etc. it's all very fascinating.
