QB starter vs Illinois

Submitted by GoBlue1969 on October 9th, 2019 at 8:24 AM

Would there be any help to the offense to start Dylan McCaffrey (if he is healthy) against Illinois? Have Shea on the sidelines helping to send in plays, it might give him some different perspective and help him with the offense.  Even if McCaffrey is not healthy, insert Milton this week-

There are obvious problems with the offensive scheme, but a glaring one is Shea’s grasp of it, his vision, rhythm and ability to hit receivers.
It will give McCaffrey and Milton game experience also, and against an opponent these guys should beat.

Thoughts?

Well, yes, the elements of truth in my sarcastic reply:

1) Limit the playbook.

2) Make arm punts to Nico part of the limited playbook and run it frequently.

3) Get the ball in the flat to slot WRs.

You know, the same shit everyone has been saying since Army.

I know this hot take is getting old for everyone but honestly what else is there to talk about? The defense kicked ass and all but there is a huge, glaring, freakishly weird thing occurring with this offense to the likes of which I don't know if I've ever seen so can we really complain about the constant threads like this?

Well, I guess we can, but damn it is going to happen with such a hugely odd thing occurring.

This is stupid. How many times do we have to go over this. Dmac ain't even cleared to practice yet and prolly won't be available for at least a couple more weeks. The ship has sailed for him to take over the starting job

I want to know why tons of other programs can start RS freshman and soph's and they seem ready? What's going on with our coaching that dylan/milton can't step in if called on? Who was the last QB to actually progress throughout his time here? Can't really say Rudock.

No McCaffrey should not start, he is not the best QB on the team.

A few good plays against 2nd and 3rd string defenders in mop up duty do not a starter make, esp. a starter that has been injured, TWICE, in very few game reps.

Just stop

I’m not sure why this has been getting a negative reaction or the idea of this.  Have you been watching this team and Shea??? Do you think it is wise to see if someone else can get prepared and have some games to get ready for the only one that matters.  From what I see you are losing at least 4 more games with what has been thrown on the field thus far.  I don’t care about sheas feelings he has looked awful, and the turnovers most are absolutely unacceptable

So are the people looking for a big uptick in the offense after 5 or 6 games the same ones who were saying after MTSU that a team improves the most between their first and second game?

2 Int's would be just about on average with Shae dropping it on the carpet and throwing at least one per game over the last 5 games.

So... it'd be just like having Shae in there, but faster on his feet, and quicker release times. True dual threat would possibly open things up.

As frustrating as it is, there are certain positions where Harbaugh will lean on the older player and qb is one of those. Hes of that Bo, Lloyd lineage where they like the juniors and seniors, especially on the oline and quarterback. The only exception to this rule will be if someone comes in and is clearly way more talented.

This is not in support of the OP but it should be noted that at this point in the season and given the significantly poor play of the offense there are no "Hawt takes". The coaches are surely in a better position to make good decisions in this regard than the fans. However, "the offense is hitting it's stride on all fronts" would seem to be the "Hawest take" out there. So, it seems to me that everything is on the table and open for debate.

From the fan side of me, which I have little respect for, I would love to see what Milton has to offer in a full-game review...just from the curiosity side.

Maybe the coach is the problem and not the qb? look at Oklahoma, ohio state...different qb different year same results of domination. Where Michigan has a medicore to bad 4-5 star qb every year

Have not seen any comments on play calling and confusion to get the play in. Roll Shea out w a Rb. Get tapes of Leach and get him out of the pocket.

goblue1969, you mean well, but please add real content and not mere speculation. We all know that the offense has been . . . underwhelming. We also know that Harbaugh is going to do what he wants to do, and doesn't listen to the fans (and really, shouldn't listen to the fans.) It also is a recipe for disaster to make a wholesale change right now. As already said by other posters, short of an injury or glaring mistakes, Harbaugh is going to go with Shea Patterson. While I am pretty glum about this season, living in the BPONE, I think there is at least a slight precedent. Jake Rudock improved massively over the course of the 2015 season. Personally, I think the change in offense this year is much larger. I am giving Harbaugh the benefit of the doubt that it just has taken a lot of time to install. If this is a year of pain and we don't really fire on all cylinders until next year, I can live with that, even though I don't like it. But there is more. I absolutely don't want McCaffrey playing until he is 100% cleared on concussion protocol. And I really suspect that Milton and others just aren't ready. So even if it is very painful, I'd rather suffer through Shea Patterson than to make a QB change prematurely.

It wasn't speculation, but a thought I have had that obviously can't be commented on without the post being a negative because everyone seems to have said it already? I was merely trying to start a conversation and the cannibals came out to eat because I broke some MGoBoard laws.

I only wanted to have some decent conversation about the future of the program, and the game upcoming and I had a thought on it and wanted some feedback and some actual discussion- and I sure got it. And I knew I would get it and for some reason I still posted.

If anyone gets pissed that I posted something like this, then fine- what I'm saying is those who are commenting negative, why even comment if it bothers you? read it, and if you don't like it move on. No need to negative everything. Just move on. the ones who would like to comment and add to it- welcome.

Harbaugh, having been a starting QB, doesn't want his starter playing timidly because he's looking over his shoulder fearing getting the hook.  I understand you don't want to undermine your starter and potentially make things worse.  Then again, given the data before us, I still think if Dylan is healthy for Sat. that Harbaugh give him the second quarter.  Go with the best performer for the rest of the season and be done with the chatter.  Of course this assumes their play separates them pretty clearly....

Not going to happen unless Patterson gets hurt.  Everyone wants the back up until the back up does not perform.  Remember when everyone said Speight sucked and they wanted peters or O'Korn, yeah that worked out well.

Maybe it is just me but I think the guys that get paid to coach know a little bit about what they are doing.

McCaffrey is not available.

Milton over Shea? Only if Shea is not available.

Your thought process would be more appropriate if M was 1-4, not 4-1. If M wins out they're still in the B1GCG with a likely UW rematch. A huge "If", but CUMONG MAN. This takes times even with the most intelligent and talented stock. 5th-year Sr. Jake Rudock took 5-6 games in a new offensive system under Harbaugh before he eventually blossomed, and he was a pre-Med student who made it into the NFL.

Yeah I shouldn't respond to people calling names. I get that. I am just saying offer something to the thread other than act like a middle schooler, or an Ohio fan. I don't take it too personal, until i see someone just out and out calling me an idiot or dumbass- then I've got a problem, because they talk tough behind a profile, but come down to it will not say that out loud face to face. If someone doesn't like the thread, just pass over it instead of acting juvenile. I felt like I could start a legitimate conversation about the upcoming game, and the possible future of the QB situation and the offense. No offense.

Why the fuck do so many people with 200-300 points feel the need to post the EXACT SAME THING four or five times every day?

Every.  Damn.  Day.  Some schmoe is one here bitching about QB play and asking our thoughts, and it's clear they don't have a clue what they're talking about.

You want our thoughts?  Go read any one of the 237 shitpost threads identical to the one you just made.

D-caff needs another year to bulk up. He will get wrecked again if he starts against the big boys of the B10.

Hopefully Milton gets a half against Illinois. Then if he Shea is struggling vs PSU - throw him in before it's too late.

You get what you wish for...Grass is not always greener on other side, etc., etc..

I trust that coaches know the best from all the practices and so on..

But from the revelation of McCrone only due to the injury to Ross, I am now sure if coaches know the best...
