Purdue fans predictions and comments for the Michigan game

Submitted by Decatur Jack on

To say that some Purdue fans are confident might be a massive understatement. They are riding high right now after upsetting Missouri, and expect no less against Michigan.

I was surfing around Big Ten blogs and message boards and I found a few comments that were a little mouthy from Purdue fans IMO, and I thought I'd post them here - just in case you weren't properly motivated.

Purdue could mess around and beat Michigan next week. Jeff Brohm is a difference maker.

Purdue upsets Michigan next week. You heard it here first
It feels strange to type this, but Purdue is the biggest test Michigan's defense has faced to this point.
Yes, Purdue is good enough to beat Michigan
Purdue has actually beaten Ohio State more times in the last 10 years than Michigan has.

Oh, and we needed fewer tries too.

Brohm is going to scheme against a very strong defense and Purdue is not going to get shut down completely. I am not expecting another 35-42 points, but We’re going to score some. Can we keep Michigan kicking field goals or worse?
I don’t think Michigan has the offensive talent to run away from us, let alone most teams in the Big Ten.
Purdue has more wins over Ohio State since 2004 than Michigan

I say that’s legit.

Michigan is way overrated
I wouldn't be surprised if UM ended up 6 - 6 or 7 - 5. I give UM at least 3 BIG victories because of their defense but unless our offense improves drastically from it's putrid play the previous two weeks against inferior opponents Purdue fans will be celebrating a decisive victory.

I agree with some fans here, if Purdue is able to get an early lead, UM simply doesn't have the offense to score enough points.
If Purdue can't beat UM then Brohm needs to be fired. The Big Ten is way down this year except Penn State which the only team getting a major bowl invite. Harbaugh has nothing to prove this year because if you true football fans have been paying any attention Harbaugh is heading to the Colts next year.
I watched them play a good but not great AFA team yesterday. Their QB did not throw accurately and made some poor decisions. Michigan defense is solid but certainly vulnerable, didn't have much of a pass rush on smaller AFA OL.

We can beat these guys.
Michigan is certainly beatable
Playing in front of a sellout homecoming crowd against atop ten team...I can't see a let down. Michigan could handle them but I dont think it would be because we're not ready to play.
We cannot lose to this clown
Two games in a row with mediocre performances till 4 the qtr. Should Purdue strike early and often by getting points, it might be too late for Michigan to catch up.
This year is different and feels different. We now know how to score with a balanced attack. Our defense plays stingy as well.
Purdue 35 MI 24.
Kids believing in themselves is the key,he is telling them right now lets win our first big ten game at home in front of a sellout crowd, shock the world again.
Purdue will blow the game open if Michigan plays as lethargic as they have in the past two games in the red zone thru 3 quarters. My hunch stays with a track race pace that Michigan cannot keep up with. Holding officially at Purdue 35 Michigan 24.
Michigan is ripe for the picking. I know we haven't beat a ranked team in yrs. It will happen on 9/23.
My guess is that Harbaugh tries to simply out tough and out muscle Purdue (which a team hasn't either tried or been able to) to run them down in the late 3rd and 4th quarter...my guess is that is what Missouri wanted to do but when Purdue got up 21-0 in the first quarter, that went to hell and a hand basket.
If you enjoyed watching us crush Missouri, you'll enjoy what Brohm has in store for Michigan. 42-12 Boilers
The great thing about playing Michigan right now is their quarterback SUCKS! Boiler the fuck up baby!
Brohm has us on a path to 9-3, just like Tiller in '97. We're going to whup that ass on Sept 23 and I'm going to say I told ya so
35-7 Boilermakers. Michigan is garbage.
They can't score in the red zone HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Fuck Michigan
Sellout crowd = huge Purdue win
Michigan is scared
Jeff Brohm > Don Brown
I have been waiting a long, long time for a huge Purdue upset, and I can feel it coming this Saturday against Michigan. For 4 yrs with Hazell we sucked, but now we have a legitimate coach in Brohm. Michigan is 100 percent overrated and 100 percent beatable. They have no idea what's in store for them. Harbaugh's "vaunted offense" has been a complete joke this year. Their defense will have no answer for Brohm's schemes. He's a brilliant play caller. Expect this to be just like the Missouri game. Michigan would get walloped by Missouri… we shut THEM DOWN. Can Michigan even move the ball? Can they even score points? We get through and sack Speight once and HE'S DONE. There is no reason why we can't win this game. Michigan dies officially on September 23, a day that will live in Purdue football history forever.
What a joy it would be to embarrass Michigan on national tv
Stat of the Day:
MICHIGAN SUCKS
Don Brown vs Jeff Brohm? One is a genius and the other coaches for Michigan. Brohm wins every day
Purdue wins and the meltdown from Michigan fans will be EPIC
This will be my daughter's first game and she is so excited to watch us beat Michigan.
Purdue 42, MI 6

I like that, based on three games of data, they've not only managed to make hasty generalizations but they are taking pride in those generalizations. It's kind of like when you call out someone on shitty reasoning but they seem awfully proud of the answer they gave all the same.

Michigan was undefeated and went down to Purdue and lost. I thought it would be an easy road win and our defense was excellent at the time. The Purdue running back was nicked up earlier in the season and finally was well enough to play against Michigan and gained 150 yards on the Michigan defense, the most given up by any back. Rick Leach was also off on his passing game and Purdue played a stack D line to stop our running game.  The '76 team was far superior to the '76 Purdue squad but somehow lost. So, I am worried that the offense could lose this game. I just hope the offense can put it together and we win easily.

I'm nervous about this one....I doubt we lose but we are vulnerable to short quck passes on D and our O has yet to prove itself. There IS a scenario where we lose this one like Iowa last year. I'm not as confident as I should be for this one.

The D isnt vulnerable to short, quick passes unless a reciever beats a pressing corner or safety right off the snap. They are kind of vulnerable to getting RPSed if a tunnel screen is thrown over a blitzing safety. That's what we saw against Cinci. To say this defense is vulnerable to short, quick passes is short-sighted. Opponents have gotten a few plays out of that aspect of the passing game because thats the only passing game worth trying against a pass rush like Michigan's.

MileHighWolverine

September 21st, 2017 at 1:47 PM ^

But it's worked...2 years running. You get a tunnel screen that goes for a TD and maybe some other fluke score and we are down two TDs with a bad redzone Offense.

I'm not saying it WILL happen but I'm not confident in any game right now until I see our offense improve dramatically. Throw in Black out, Isaac injured, road game, etc. and who knows?

Wilt needs to step up big time because I see this one being another potential Cincy game - that should have been a sleeper and wasn't.

Michigan's D under Don Brown has been battle tested against spread offenses and came out smelling like a rose much more often than not.  I don't think this weekend's game will be any different.  Again, it's the effectiveness of Michigan's offense that will dictate whether this is an easy cover or sweat it out type of game.

Purdue doesn't generate pressure.  When Speight (or even any average QB) has time to read and throw from a clean pocket he throws mostly accurate passes to open receivers.  Even without Black, Crawford, Perry, DPJ and the TE's will get open move the chains..  From there, the running game should open up nicely for some gash runs from Isaac and Evans. I suspect we'll see some Harbaugh wrinkles broken out now that it's Big 10 play

Oh their MAC level offense won't look so impressive against Gary, Winovich, Hurst, Bush and the rest of Doc Brown's boys.

I understand their enthusiasm but I believe Michigan will go to West Lafayette and handle it's business just like it did in Dallas.  They're are in store for a rude awakening.

The fact that these people keep mentioning Don Brown in a negative way shows just how little these people understand about our football team.

If all price points were still for sale during game week and it took a run on cheap tickets at the venue by opposition fans to sell out? Is this game even sold out?

I'll share this story, and maybe it is more common than I think.

So, I purchased tickets in section 102 for Saturday on Monday evening for about $67 each with fees included on Stubhub. Tuesday afternoon rolls around and I start getting emails from the Purdue Athletic Department thanking me for purchasing tickets to the game.  I thought to myself, "Well that's odd, I didn't buy them directly from the department."  I continued to get these emails and then I figured out that the seller of the tickets was actually the Purdue Athletic Department.

Long story short, it appears as though they were actually (and I believe they still are in the endzone section) dumping AD owned tickets for less than face value on secondary sites.

I'm sincerely hoping to see a LOT of Maize and Blue there on Saturday.

Put me in the + 24 point win category. Their D line is HORRIBLE with pass rush. Statistically one of the worst in D1 and just what our Oline needs. Look for Speight to have big day. Also, Purdue will not score more than 17 pts. Of course Purdue will be all jacked up and try some trickeration. They will hit a play or two. They will have two semi-successful drives. That's it. By the end of game, the alpha dogs will be Michigan. All that said, if Michigan doesn't have a good passing day, then Michigan truly is in trouble. Purdue is a bad defense. If I am not mistaken, Purdue has only 3 tackles and/or QB sacks for loss for the entire year! That's 1 per game!

Purdue is having a respectable season so far. That's great for the Big Ten, and they are to be congratulated; it's a much better team than last year, and I hope they give us a game. Back in the day, Purdue was often called "The Spoilermakers." Our team is young, we're prone to offensive mistakes so far, but the eyeballs don't lie about our defense. The Boilers/Spoilers will have more trouble than they think. 27-13 Michigan.

As someone who played football for 10 years, followed it for 25, and got raised in the sport by a father/coach of 40 years, nothing irritates me more than amateur analysis from people with no clue what they're talking about. 42-6? Jesus...

Good lord some people just have no clue.  They passed the ball 7 fucking times.  And...

Cover her eyes when Devin Bush, Rashan Gary, Mo Hurst, and Chase Winovich hit Blough at the same time from 3 different directions.

I'm not sure the result will be suitable viewing for young audiences.

Everyone talks about how Michigan hasn't played a real offense yet, but has Purdue played a real defense yet? Louisville, a MAC team, and Missouri. Hell didn't Missouri State score almost twice as many points against Missouri than Purdue did? This game feels a lot like 2015 NW, other team gets a lot of hype and finally expects to compete with the conference and then...well you remember how well that went for 2015 NW /Jehu'd

Again, I think it is silly to dismiss Purdue. Michigan does not play well on the road and we saw what happened at Iowa last year. The Michigan D won't be able to totally shut down Purdue, I think they score 17-21 points. Can Michigan actually convert their red zone opportunities?

On both sides. Going to be an interesting game. Purdue may or may not be the biggest challenge Michigan has faced so far. Who really knows? All about who shows up. I sure hope our guys come out guns blazing and set the tone with some tough play in the the trenches and at the point of attack. I truly believe our O-line is capable of playing better than they did last week. We shall see.

Here's mine.........While I realize that Harbaugh is indeed the QB whisperer, and knows more about coaching than any of us mgobloggers ever could dream of, the wrong guy is playing QB.  One of his backups, Peters, will transfer to Purdue, and put up 300+ yards 2 of the 3 times he plays UM, provided Brohm stays in place.  Coaches get to see the QB's in all sorts of situations, and I am sure they have their reasons, but I have always placed a premium value on the guy who can best throw it from point A to point B.  I can't believe Speight is that guy.  His plus side was supposed to be his experience, but it hasn't shown this season, and we are through the non BIG part of the schedule, with things same same as last year, if that.

That said, while making predictions, we squeak by Purdue.  At least it will be exciting.  When you bank on your defense, they need to shut down the (apparent) good offense.  Heaven help us if they don't.

I think the motivational level of this team will be high because of the closer than expected wins during the past 2 games. If we had blown out Cincinnati and AF, the team would think the Purdue game would be a cupcake game. This happened under Bo a few times in '76 against Purdue and against the Gophers in '86.  It may have been the case against Iowa last season. I think the team is hungry to prove how good they're especially the offense.

mexwolv

September 21st, 2017 at 3:18 PM ^

Maybe because it's Prudue.

But I was much more worried against AF & Florida.  No one should forget we have not been in any real danger in any of our first three games and the coaching staff has played relatively safe and conservative because there just hasn't been the need to be more agressive in offense.

Purdue has not seen a Defense even remotely as strong and as agressive as Michigan's.  All we need is small improvements from our ofense so we can be in good shape for when they will be needed most (Wisconsin, PSU, OSU).

Trust our players and trust our coaching staff.

And Glo Blue!

These two teams are comparable. The bigggest delta is Michigan's defense, which hopefully will play well enough to win the game.  Michigan's offense is comparatively worse than Purdues.

Total Offense:    Purdue: 45th, 459 ypg      Michigan: 72nd, 402 ypg

Passing Offense:   Purdue, 35th, 287 ypg   Michigan: 84th, 203 ypg

Rushing Offense:   Purdue 84th, 173 ypg    Michigan 41st, 199 ypg

Scoring Offense:    Purdue 43rd, 36 ppg,     Michigan 57th, 33 ppg

Total Defense:      Purdue, 68th, 374 ypg     Michigan 5th, 208 ypg

Rushing Defense: Purdue, 53rd, 130 ypg    Michigan 9th, 82 ypg

Passing Defense: Purdue 83rd, 244 ypg     Michigan 12th 125 ypg

Scoring Defense: Purdue 41st, 20 ppg      Michigan 24th, 15 ppg

If there were ever an opponent on Michigan's schedule against which Wilton Speight could potentially regain his confidence then it has to be at Purdue.  Purdue's defensive line is not stout, they don't get pressure and the Purdue secondary has been horrifyingly bad in pass defense, short and long.

go 6-6 or maaaybe 7-5. Probably a Purdue guy trying to look (to them) like a "reasonable" Wolverine fan, which would be slightly past "delicious" on the "how delusional?" scale.

But I prefer to think it's an actual UMich fan, seeking to sharpen their pain for even thinking like they are.

I love the comments about them scoring points early and then coasting from there... like, how you gonna expect to ACTUALLY score those early points? To get an early lead you have to, you know, score on this defense. Good fuckin luck.

I mean, I get their optimism.  I'd be talking the same if I could finally root for a team that was even somewhat relevant nationally.  Good for them.

Michigan is still going to run over that offensive line and Purdue is going to have to figure out a way to actually complete passes against a competent defense, but it's a way tougher game than I thought a couple weeks ago.

Extremely young, raw and talented. Unlike OSU then defense doesn't look it. They had a sr QB too who also didn't look good. Critics forget team will evolve every week.

I remember a dog 5-2 game at Purdue in winter many years ago, early 2000s

Game was at the Big House. There was no way there was over 100,000 there even at the beginning of the game. Just insanely miserable weather and it is still the only game I have left early. Left at halftime. Game ended up 5-0 Michigan.
