PSU Doctor Clarifies Comments on Myocarditis % in B1G Athletes

Submitted by JR's Flow on September 3rd, 2020 at 6:55 PM

I know there is a post on the original story already, but didn't want this important update to go unnoticed under 120 comments.

I am not posting this to dis-value the issue of myocarditis, but we all know how important accurate info has been throughout the pandemic.

Ain’t that the truth.

I quit trying to even keep track of the news because what’s true changes hour to hour.
Between this, the models, projections.  And if I hear one more conflicting thing about Sweden I’m gonna hurl.

I just do what I know is common sense precautions for me, my family, and neighbors and ignore the noise.

This is why it's so important for the Big Ten to be transparent in their decision making process.

Myocarditis was supposed to be a major reason for the season cancellation and this is the second study debunked in just the last 2 weeks. Millions of dollars and thousands of student athlete and university employee careers are on the line here.

Not playing a whole season harms many of the players.  And at some point even fifth year seniors who will be eligible for another season, won't stick around to for another semester to play.

As for financing, where is this magical money going to come from?  No games/no TV revenue.

If it's safe for high school, it will be safe for colleges.

In almost every operating entity your largest expense is salaries/wages and benefits.  Michigan's 2019 budget had $187 million in revenue and $185 million in expenses.  Now, reduce that top line by $100 million and you have $87 million in revenue to offset $185 million in expenses.  Salaries and benefits alone were $71 million and student aid was $28 million.  You're already running a deficit and you haven't even begun to touch operating expenses, maintenance, debt service ect.

I guess what I'm saying is that it doesn't matter how much imagination you have or how open you are to change when its mathematically impossible to do what this guy suggests.

It is not that people are afraid of change. Cancelling just looks like overkill at this point. We can still play. We have made adjustments and changes to mitigate Covid. We reassess risk, look at the data and move forward.

Lou Holtz said it best, "Don't keep me alive by keeping me from living." Parents, athletes and coaches want to play. Fans want football. This is not ignoring risk, it is respecting it.

Quality of life has to be measured against risk. This is a conversation that needs to be everywhere soon as this is likely something that's going be a way of life for a long time.

The study was not debunked. The study has not been published yet, and the number floating around is "close to 15%," a number that IF TRUE is still a no-brainer to not play.

Hopefully they can finish the peer review/edit process quickly and everyone can make an informed decision.

Dr. Sebastianelli has a future at the CDC.

My father had viral myocarditis when I was a senior in HS. He had more tubes in him than a wave pool. He had pneumonia and the bug jumped from his pleural cavity to his pericardial sac. He was down for a while and lost 30% of his heart function in his early 40's.

In addition to the article above and all the shit he has said on the record about veterans take note that over the 147 years the Trump family has been in America not one god damn member of the family has served in the military. Starting with his great grandfather all they way to his kids not one

Veterans and active military overwhelming support Trump. They care about policies, not personalities. "Trump said a bunch of mean stuff." The response from most veterans is, "I know wasn't it hilarious."

Veterans have felt for years that Washington has trolled them and used them as props. Now there is someone in the Whitehouse who trolls Washington.

He was one of 400,000 (!!!!) people at the event so I mean, is it that bad?  Do you think he even regretted attending?  I doubt it.  He was in his 60s. How many more rallies did he have left?  People need to live their lives and accept some level of risk and everyone there is probably glad they did.

For one, the study hasn't been published yet.  So it's not a published study.  And two, the article you shared links to an article that says "close to 15%" which like, ok, this PSU guy said "roughly 30-35%" which turned out to be total BS (what is "roughly" and "close to"? you either know the number or you don't).  Let's see the actual study and then the peer reviews.

Everywhere else we're seeing much lower (like the NFL saying 0 of 171 or something like that) and tons of leagues are playing without issues.
