Profile: I think we're gonna like VanSumeren

Yes, it's from the Free Press.

Ben VanSumeren is officially the "sleeper" of this class, a kid who sounds remarkably as consumed and intense about football as his new Head Coach (he goes to bed every night at 9 p.m.), and also a quote machine.

“I haven’t had a sleepover since sixth grade. I value that sleep. You don’t get sleep at sleepovers.”

Sam was talking to him, and mentioned a comparison to the Panda (Khalid Hill), and VanSummeren said, I think I'm better than him. He didn't say it, in a dismissive way, but he said it. It caught Sam of guard.

When watching his highlight tape the first thing that stands out is his passion to hit, and hit hard, whether on defense or offense. Was definitely immpressed by his film, it's 4* level. What is the competition like that he played against?

wasn't very good this year, but they play in a conference that includes Frankenmuth a perenial playoff team and two time Division 5 semi-finalist, and Millington also a perenial playoff school, they made the 3rd round after making the semi's the previous season.  Bridgeport also made the state playoffs from their league this year.

They also played Nouvel Catholic (and lost), Nouvel was the Division 8 runner-up.

This was Garbers first losing season (4-5) in 5 years,  4 of thsoe losses to playoff teams, 3 that went deep into November.

a combo of Houma and Hill, that’s a huge find. Watch a Lions game and you’ll see that the ability to reliably pick up 3rd or 4th and 1 with the same play is a huge asset. Hill also made some great plays as a receiver, but he wasn’t elite in that regard. And Houma was always a real threat as a runner, but wasn’t the lead blocker that Hill was.

If you can get strong lead blocking, impact rushing, and a real passing threat out of one guy, then that is huge.

Yossarian is the protagonist in a classic WWII novel by Joseph Heller called "Catch-22". In one scene Yossarian finds himself stripped naked and sitting up in a tree overseeing the insanity of the war and the crazy army regulations that have driven him to exasperation. This is much how I see myself overlooking Michigan football for the last ten years. However, I, like our hero Yossarian, will forge ahead.

Fullback is the best position in football. I played the position and it doesn't get enough love, and this guy is one of the most athletic players I have seen at it. Him and Bench leading the charge is what I'm going to love seeing next fall. They are going to be the next bash brothers.

You like cool stories?

When I coached my daughter's travel soccer, we asked the parents to discourage sleepovers the night before league games (eg, the games that could promote or relegate your team). It worked with some parents. One time before an *important* game a parent rolled into the parking lot and dumped 3 or 4 of the girls into warmups after driving all night following a trip to Cedar Point. She defended herself by saying that they all slept "just fine" in the car, thank you. Naturally, the game was a bit sloppy.

Someone tell the kid to just exercise instead of sitting in outfield for 3 hours a night, though somehow I think he will still manage to add strength and speed by July.

Slightly different from what I did in college. I went to the library every night. I really did. Then started playing quarters at about ten PM.

Hmmmm, I enjoy his intensity. But it sounds like the poor guy has almost no social life. If that's what he wants, great, go for it! But I'll bet that football has seen some things at night that shake it to its very core. Gross, gross, sticky things...

I actually love that we got this kid but why does he have to already be pegged at fullback? I can see how he would have been an all big ten caliber linebacker at Iowa fitting their mold of linebackers perfectly. What happens if the kid shows up at 6'4 next year 240? Why not TE? What if he stays the same size, why no SS? The kid reminds me of Kam Chancellor the most...

How about our own Aaron Shea? I still recall his block on the end of the line, taking down two would-be-tacklers, opening the way for the score. Play of the game and eptimomized how he always played the game. This is what I imagine with Ben.Aaron,as you will recall had good ball skillls as well, solid runner and excellent receiver coming out of the backfield.
