Priority point bonus announcement

Submitted by EricSV85 on August 6th, 2020 at 11:00 AM

Just received an email from the AD.

If you convert both PSC and ticket payment to a Champions Fund donation, you get 100 points and 20% off of next years PSC/tickets (based off of this years prices)

Just PSC gets you 75 points and 20% off of PSC

Applying to next years costs gives you 50 points.

That 20% off next year is the kicker - I added two more seats this year (up from 2). So if I'm getting 20% off everything, then I'm only paying $19.40 and floating Michigan at loan of $505 for a year (only made one payment on this year's tickets) for 100 points.

no you only get the 20% if you donate; so i think for every $1 that you have paid / donate you are going to get a $0.20 discount.

Plus tax deduction  yadda yadda; but its not something that you are floating them a loan; you are giving up the $505 in return for $110 off next year, is how I read it

Oddly, I did not get the email from the AD yet.

One thing I would caution people on is whether there is any real value in having extra points. If you have your seats, you get to keep them. If you want to get better seats, you can almost always do that by donating more for the season you want to move. More points probably helps you get away tickets to OSU and MSU if you're inclined or helps you get Final Four or CFP tickets if we ever get to that, but I have found my point accumulation mostly worthless over the years.

I filled it out and elected to roll my PSC but not my ticket payment that I had already made.  I was feeling generous but not THAT generous.

I was planning to take a full refund but that's when I didn't know about this. So I based my decision on a combination of 1) helping the AD of my and my wife's alma mater during unprecedented times, 2) take some extra points, 3) slightly lower my PSC next year, and 4) get an 80% tax deduction (I'm in the 14% that itemize and would see a benefit here).

The 80/20 roll no longer applies due to the Trump tax reform.  Note that PSC payments (or priority seat donations) are no longer able to be deducted from taxes (including not 80% thereof, which was the rule under the prior tax laws).

What the AD is trying to do here is to offer the option to convert either the PSC amount or the full amount of PSC + tickets to an actual donation to the Champions Fund, which would then count as a full donation (100% of which would count as a deduction when you itemize).  Note that the effect of that is to economically net you back your marginal tax rate on such amount.

Alternatively, you can roll the entire payment to next year, or you can get a refund.
