President Schlissel's bar

Submitted by Michigan Made on November 2nd, 2019 at 8:04 PM

Talked with somebody who knows certain personnel in the athletic educational support program that schlissel is making it very difficult to recruit students based on a very high academic bar set by the president. Much recruiting has been hampered by the inability to land blue-chip athletes who would like to come here but cannot meet the requirements set by the president. He went on to say that our basketball coach left based on his inability to recruit athletes who inevitably could not make the grades. Something to consider with regard to Harbaugh who, it was said, to have lobbied schlissel several times to get the bar lowered. It opens up the debate regarding athletes who want to come here and compete at a high level to further their athletic careers professionally versus an academic standard placed on individuals who will not be going into... Say scientific research. It seems coaches hands are somewhat tied. I am certainly not advocating for Ohio State or Alabama standards by any means. Harbaugh himself, I would assume after his comments regarding the university years back, has a pretty high bar on his own.

Because we've heard about multiple recruits that weren't let in. Demarr Dorsey, Dytarious Johnson, and others. There's even been the rare case of a guy taking a prep year then coming to Michigan. There isn't some cabal running the university that was undermining Beilein's recruiting. The OP is far-fetched.

I don't buy this for a second. My kid has classes with current team members.

They sure as fuck didn't get in on their academic prowess. They do show up to class though.

And that's honestly true of most college students.  Obviously you have to be somewhat intelligent, but I have friends who are professors at some pretty large schools and they all say that kids who show up consistently and put in a modicum of effort usually at least pass the class, if not do reasonably well.  That does seem to be a consistent theme at UM going back for decades (I certainly saw it in the 90s); they push the kids who attend class and pay some attention.

Had a lot of classes with a lot of athletes from across the spectrum of teams. Some were genuinely intelligent, thoughtful, and could hold their own, including a few you still see playing on Sundays. Others... not so much.

The same was true for everyone else. The university is full of people who can't hack it, or who don't care enough to show that they can.

But your daughter's mileage may vary.

Michigan's 'academic bar' is pretty overrated. Yes, we won't take the actual illiterate unlike certain SEC teams, but athletes with very very subpar grades get into Michigan because of sports.

If Michigan loses recruits, it's more likely to be because of there not being a community-wide quasi-conspiracy to condone and contribute to the cover up of illicit payments.

Harbaugh didn’t mind saying what he said when he skullfucked USC.   I’m not sure what he thinks now for going 0-4 vs aPOSu.

Zero sources, nothing but hearsay and speculation.

Michigan just played their best road game in nearly a calendar year a week after beating up a top-10 team in a rivalry game.

Should've saved your shitpost for a couple weeks ago.

I have a very hard time believing that... before they hired Harbaugh,  Schlissel had an Alumni event at the Lincoln Center here in NYC, and I attended....his opening speech, in short order, devolved into the football program and getting it right.  Was surprised how fast he went, to what was on everyones mind.

Not bulshit. Don't care if you don't believe it for a second. Not going to name names and jeopardize jobs. The long and short of it is schlissel who has been asked repeatedly by the Press will not give specific information as to why he finds it so important for athletes who's career plan is for professional athletics deems it necessary for them to attain a higher than normal standard than most other colleges, and equal to Stanford. As you all know or may not know schlissel most recently comes from Brown university. My friend is a specialist in the oncology department at the U of M Hospital. Not someone to b*******. Works with someone close to the athletic department educational program director. Bottom line - Harbaugh's hands are tied to a rather large degree. Believe what you want, neg me all you want ya bunch a Salty Sea Hags. Pardon my bourbon.
