Practice clip of JJ McCarthy

I'm not sure who this poster is, but he somehow got access to a Michigan practice and shared a clip of McCarthy dropping a dime. Hopefully this embed works:

The future of Michigan Football is bright with #9 pic.twitter.com/ZT0OtKGboc

The clip is pretty grainy, so I had a hard time picking out some of the numbers/players, but it looks to me like:

  • RB is #22 Tavierre Dunlap
  • TE is #89 Carter Selzer
  • Oline is (left to right): #52 Karsen Barnhart, #66 Chuck Filiaga, #51 Greg Crippen, #70 Nolan Rumler, #53 Trente Jones
  • WR is #10 Cristian Dixon
  • CB is #13 Eamonn Dennis
  • Safety is #31 Jordan Morant

And of course this means that Dennis and Morant are all-conference players who just beat by two all-americans.

That ball traveled 50 yards in the air and McCarthy didn’t even step into it. It’s safe to say he has a cannon. It also looks like he went through his reads. Caveats of extended time in the pocket and it only being practice apply, but these are good signs for the future of the QB position

Yeah to be fair, he was a five star recruit for a reason. There really wasn’t any question about his tools and his ability.

The question, as with any recruit, is whether they can adjust to the college speed and talent, pick up the playbook, and put it all together. And do so with consistency and while under pressure.

We're gonna have to put up 40+/game to have a chance against the better opponents on our schedule (with the exception of OSU, unless JJ and Co. are good for about 85) which is something we can obviously easily do.

Right?

Even in regards to Peters, he went on to become a multi-year starter at another B1G school, Throwing 21 TDs and 8 picks.

These guys may not have worked out here for various reasons, but they’ve all shown to be talented guys.

Shea was a good QB with a couple flaws that really put a damper on his game (ability to hit a deep ball and keeping on reads). That kept him from being elite, but he still put together one of the best statistical seasons/careers in program history.

Milton was a high ceiling guy that needed a lot of work from Day 1 but had the raw tools to be great. I don’t think anyone can argue that’s still not the case, he simply didn’t put it together in his time here.

McCaffrey showed a lot of potential but couldn’t stay healthy.

Peters didn’t have the mental makeup Harbaugh coveted, transferred out after an injury and Patterson came in and went on to be a multi-year starter.

Patterson came in and started from day 1 at Michigan and had the 2nd best passer efficiency rating in the B10 his first year here. McCaffrey transferred out of Michigan after not starting over Patterson, who according to recruiting rankings, was the best QB in the nation. Milton wasn’t ranked as highly as anyone else on your list and was named the starter before injuring his hand and transferring out himself. But good comparison other than all the things wrong with your comparison

Except Mccaffrey didnt transfer out after not starting over Patterson...he transferred out after not starting over Milton who was awful.

Also everyone here said "Patterson is the QB to finally get Harbaugh over the top" and he was never more than good to okay. He wasnt even good enough to be drafted.

No, that is not why McCaffrey transferred out. It was an issue with the coach questioning his intensity.

Patterson had a questionable work ethic. He was a little small but had the skills. He had good feet and mechanics and threw well on the run but relied too much on hype and not enough on effort.

Let's hope McNamara or McCarthy can augment their talent with dedication.

Milton was always a project, it is known.

McCaffrey... 404 file not found... we never really got to see it, so yeah.

Patterson was pretty decent until the offense got fucked around too much.

Then there's Speight. He was pretty damn good for an after thought QB, until he got his neck broken and was never fully healed while here.

So, yeah. What?

You're not doing your MgoBlog Michigan fandom correctly—you're not supposed to be happy or encouraged that McCarthy made a good throw.

You're supposed to be worried—if not downright miserable—because "Eamonn Dennis got burned crispy by Cristian Dixon, or that FS Jordan Morant got caught in no-man’s land."

I am worried about the coverage the defense ran there. It seems like we don’t have the corners required to keep up with  faster WR.

I now one upped your post by ignorantly posting something with limited knowledge and without actually watching the clip.

That single throw, in spring practice with no rush, was better than anything Shea ever threw - Spring, Fall, Winter, or Summer!  So does this mean it's time to ramp up the Hype Machine?

YEAH!!! LFG!!!!  GONNA WIN THE B1G BEHIND SHANE'S ARM!!!!!

Alas, he will still be running Harbaugh's run-centric offense. 'There vill be NOO big plays!'  He was probably scolded for making a dangerous throw...

(Please, I beg you  - let last year be the lesson about the need to score points!)

I can't speak for all the negative posters, but ... I don't think it's unreasonable to be skeptical/cynical at this point. I enjoy all the posters who write things like "it's going to be a great season -- Go Blue!" -- but after the disappointments of the past few years and the outright disaster of last year, I can't match their optimism. I think all of us hope -- really really hope -- things turn around this year. But I honestly think people predicting 7 or 8 wins can only do so by ignoring last year completely. And I can't do that. Last year was the most terrible year I've ever experienced as a Michigan football fan (and yes, I lived through both 1984 and 2008), and I can't quite see, in terms of personnel, at least (or head coaches), any reason to believe this year will be better. We may be headed for a 2 or 3 win season this year. I think the players' hope and optimism is superficial, and will disappear with our first disappointing loss of the year, and at that point I fear the spiral will grow quickly.

Oh man I hope I'm wrong. I'm really really hoping the new coaches bring in a new mentality and game-planning. Please let me be wrong.

I get it, but it’s hard to blame them. It’s just hard to feel optimistic about next year’s team given what we saw last year and knowing who/what is waiting for the team on the last Saturday in November. I can’t envision any scenario where Michigan ends that game within two scores of OSU. I just can’t. Not unless McNamara/McCarthy somehow play like Heisman caliber QBs or someone goes and spikes OSU’s Gatorade coolers before the game and everyone on their team goes down with chronic diarrhea right before kickoff.

I hope the team does well, and I’ll never say there isn’t talent there. There definitely is. But I am in a “prove it on the field against a good team“ mindset with this program until it shows it’s earned the benefit of the doubt.

It's too bad they'll never call such a play in any reasonably competitive game situation. Starting from the five is a three runs and punt situation, some clock will get killed though.

While that is impressive and a great play, what the video doesn’t show is his ratio of great plays to bad plays. If we hear that he can limit the bad plays then he might be a good starter. This shows his potential though.
