Plausible Realignment for Michigan

Submitted by AeroEngin04 on November 10th, 2023 at 8:04 PM

Screw the BIG first and foremost.  Since the Regents reportedly have discussed this, what is a plausible conference to go to?  I think there are only two choices.

1. SEC; we would have to probably try to bring the two LA schools and either PSU, ND, or OSU.  There is sure to be language in their SC/UCLA contract to join BIG that will allow them an out if something bad happens like one of highest revenue member deciding to leave.  Michigan will have more TV money in the long run than even staying with BIG.

2. Independence with an ND ACC deal.  5 games with ACC teams.  7 games that we’ll have to find opponents for.  Probably have to schedule MSU and OSU annually.  Less money than going to the SEC or staying with BIG.  Need to find a TV partner: probably NBC.  NBC will then have UM and ND at noon and 3:30 and BIG at night.

I don’t think ACC is viable.  It’s just not enough TV money even if M joins.  ACC will still likely breakup especially after their GOR expires.  Then M will still have to go to SEC anyways while making less money along the way.  I think there is no way M can join Big12 and Pac2, not enough money.  Any other thoughts?

I do not care how long "The Game" has been.  At this point it is obvious that the conference hates M.  I say this as an alumni and someone who was on board for letting Haubaugh go after his lack luster beginning to his tenure.  He has since proven his method.  Now the powers that be can't let that stand.  They can't stand that the Michigan Difference is real.  I say let's go our own way.  The Big10 is M and OSU.  Any media outlet and conference (even one of our own making) would be welcomed with Big $.  Maybe that is what the new conference could be named the Big$.

Get with the big boys and negotiate a TV deal on your own without these dumbass conferences. Let the NCAA “police” it until they overstep. Then start your own regulatory body.

This would be ideal and is essentially ND’s independence approach. But there’s reasons that only ND can make it viable for the moment e.g. scheduling nightmares, networks don’t want to negotiate piecemeal with every team upset with their conference package, and no margin for error if you have a bad spell of performance that hurts your program’s value. Maybe it becomes a real possibility by the time the next rights package is negotiated.

It would be great if people like you would just log off. You have no idea, you get your panties in a bunch yet you still click on the post and then comment some tough guy shit like you're talking to your child. I'd bet money you get run over in every aspect of your real life and never have the balls to stand up for yourself.

Look, I hope Michigan gets the hell out of the Big Ten as well but right now we are awaiting word of whether or not our coach will be on the sidelines tomorrow. How many times are we going to deal with the same hypothetical, redundant posts that have a tendency to push important information down - sometimes even off the main page completely.

Whatever you do, have a 1972 U.S. Olympic men's basketball team agreement by important people at the University of Michigan to NEVER play Ohio State in the regular season in football again.

If you're going to play Ohio State, just stay in the Big Ten.

Yeah no sense bringing them with us to any conference. These are the same dickheads that are pushing this shitshow to begin with. Why would we want them or Staee anywhere near us. If we are intent on playing both of those teams then we might as well be resigned to the Big Ten and just fight over revenue share.

I'd rather go with Ohio State. That's the best rivalry in sports. I could give a shit about anyone else. Wanna screw the Big Ten. Take the two biggest brands.

Seriously though. Michigan and everyone needs a conference with better leadership. Like Michigan or not, this whole thing has become an embarrassment for every school in the Big Ten. An experienced commissioner would not have allowed that "drip, drip, drip" of press releases or let ESPN know of a punishment before the university itself. Or allow the other coaches to have that kind of input. Of course they all piled on. It's not input you can take seriously.

If Warde Manuel was the commissioner of a conference...

This is not happening.  We played a dangerous game and got caught. Take the hand slap, win all the games and move on. We get Jim Harbaugh back for the championship run. Coach can go mow his yard, move trees off roads, smash buckeyes on Bo's grave and get his mind right for the bigger games. We aren't leaving the big 10, even though we feel like it today.

Actually, I more or less agree with you. Except ... it wasn't "we" that played a dangerous game. Sure seems like it was one ambitious young man who got out over his skiis and took chances without informing the coaching staff. (I actually feel kind of bad for him too, as I think he was only trying to go above and beyond in doing his job, and he made a catastrophic mistake in the process).

I think some penalty is more or less reasonable — regardless of whether or not we gained a major advantage by doing so, you're not allowed to decide which rules you're allowed to break and which ones not — but it certainly is unfortunate, given that there's no evidence Harbaugh or anybody else knew about it.

C'est la vie. I don't think it substantially hurts us, and it may well give the team even more motivation for the next few weeks. Whatever. Go Blue.

Start the super league now with Michigan, ND, USC, WA, Oregon, Texas, Oklahoma, Clemson, and FSU. Throw Colorado in for fun. Consider Utah and UNC.

This is the answer, and is what will eventually happen.  We can get a head start on it.  It won't be just for Fox, it will be several networks.

This is why it is so incredibly stupid and short-sided on the part of lower-tier programs like Purdue, Northwestern, etc. to gang up on Michigan.  If Michigan leaves and maybe takes some programs with them to greener pastures, the Big Ten could collapse.

If you are programs like Purdue, Northwestern, etc. you are getting the world's best sweetheart deal by being allowed in the Big Ten.  You would never get in otherwise.

So why in the world would you do anything that even remotely threatens the stability of the conference?

There's plenty of schools that want a big cut and are tired of dead weight schools.

Michigan was never one of these, and in fact, often stuck up for the "little guys." No more.

Make a real "Super conference." USC, Mich, Tex, Okl, and ND would be a good start. TV would be throwing money at them.

I don't think any of this is gonna happen

But if Michigan leaves, OSU leaves and then the Pac 4 aren't gonna care about the remnants of the Big 10. There would probably be a new league of some kind with the ACC + Pac 4 + Michigan/PSU. OSU probably just goes to the SEC

Again, not happening, but Michigan should put the fear of god in the other Big Ten schools that stand to lose a pile of money over this

If UM/ND join it's open season on the Big 12. This would be an elite athletic and academic conference.
