PJ Fleck contract extension...What about Harbaugh?

Submitted by Michigan9 on November 5th, 2019 at 4:12 PM

Just read on PJ Fleck's contract extension with the Gophers.

The discussions regarding a Harbaugh extension (even lifetime contract talk) seemed to end in the spring/summer.  Seeing his contract is up in 2021, is there any new information out there on an extension?

Minnesota is Michigan at the height of Rich Rodriguez' time here. IF Rodriguez would have been lucky enough to get to play the easy games he usually had early in the season on through game 8.

Really good teams with great recruits expose ugly weaknesses playing Purdue and Northwestern simply won't.

Minnesota has played no such really good teams with great recruits to date. We know they can beat up on bad teams with average recruits. And that's it.

One arguably challenging opponent they've had, they needed OT to win. At Fresno State. To date they've given up 30 plus to Fresno State, Georgia Southern and Purdue. And have luckily avoided the only teams in their division who haven't been plain awful.

Add in crossovers with Rutgers and Maryland.

They are better under Fleck but this start is a mirage and perfect storm rolled into one.

I bet Michigan has already asked Harbaugh if he wants an extended contract but he is probably holding off in case He wants to give the NFL another shot. But if he decides no to the NFL, he will get an auto contract extension, even if he fails to beat OSU in his first contract.

Why should we extend a coach that is 0 and 4 vs Ohio State (3 of the losses by double digits) and has never finished better than third in the east?

And who would you replace Harbaugh with?  And a coach that’s realistic get, not some bullshit about going after a Saban level coach.

Factor in that Michigan won’t use the money cannon to buy every five star available, actually has some semblance of admission standards, and an obnoxiously pious fan base that refuses to bend rules like Sec and Acc teams do. The simple answer is that Harbaugh is as good as its going to get and the expectations here may have to be realistic.

How many consecutive losses to OSU are you okay with? I’m not trying to be snarky, I am truly wondering. Not many Harbaugh supporters are willing to answer that. Where do you draw the line? 5 straight? 6 straight? 7 straight? We’ve been competitive in 1 of 4 games against them. Maybe you could say 2017 as well but still lost by double digits. No blueblood would be ok with this let alone more losses. Bama wouldn’t allow 4 straight against Auburn. Georgia and Florida wouldn’t allow 4 straight to each other. Same with Oklahoma & Texas. Same with Ole Miss & Miss State. FSU & & Florida/Miami.

Any more excuses? Wow!!  Did you ever think that maybe, just maybe recruits want to play for a winner. Maybe, just maybe our recruiting success is the result of good recruiters as well as results on the field. I agree with you that Harbaugh is about as good as it gets for you.  Football is cyclical. Give it a few years and you will be good again. Bama was trash before Saban got there. We had the cooper years. I will say that success makes it a lot easier though. We have created an NFL factory and as long as recruiting keeps rolling, there is no end in sight. Your problems begin and end with recruiting.
