PFF's top four rated CB's face off in The Game

Submitted by Brandon_L on

According to Pro Football Focus, Michigan and OSU have the top corners in College football.

Ohio State held MSU to 3 of 15 for 31yds  on passes beyond the line of scrimmage yesterday.

Other passes behind the line of scrimmage included Sparties creative Screen to LJ Scott on MSU's second play from scrimmage which went for 64yds. MSU went 4-4 on passes behind the line of scrimmage for 84yds.

Click to view the 64 yd screen that went for an easy score.

LJ Scott had an awesome game. He not only was able to get the edge a few times but the MSU line was able to bust open some holes for him through the heart of the OSU defense.

This play went for 60 right through the heart of the buckeye defense.

Scott had 160 yds rushing and another 74 receiving. As usual, whoever can run the football will The Game.

How the hell does the formula work? Lewis is better in literally every number except than Conley except 1 (LG) and yet is ranked behind him.

Minor complaint, but a pet peeve of mine is when analysts or in-game graphics claim that certain teams "face off" and then proceed to compare the same positions or sides of the ball.  If you want to say, "tale of the tape" and then compare, say, QBs  or CBs then fine.  But the OSU defensive backfield does not compete against the Michigan defensive backfield at any point in the game.

It happened in yesterday's game too.  There was a graphic about "who has the edge" and showed a Michigan vs. OSU graphic comparing apples-to-apples positions.  What matters is how does our O-Line stack up against OSU's defensive front 7 and vice versa, not which team has the better O-Line.  O-Lines don't face each other.

A much more effective framing of it is what Brian et al do on this blog:  Michigan's Run D vs. OSU's run offense; Michigan's Pass D vs. OSU's Pass offense, etc.

/end rant.

Jake Butt, Asiasi, Bunting, Hill, Evans, Ty.  OSU is a good team, but it's somewhat fortunate that we have excellent catchy-blocky guys to mitigate that CB strength.  Also screens and TE routes tend to be friendlier to a QB, so hypothetically helps O'Korn get in a rhythym (assuming he's the guy again next week).

LMAO! Stribs and Lewis would start over them two on any team. Dumbest thing I've witnessed today. I'll tell you kids what is fact though. Their secondary can be pounded. Like mentioned above, the edge has been taken on them by numerous teams. That's going to open up the inside. Michigan is the best offense and running game they will face this year. Anyone can argue with me all they want. I'm right. If Michigan cant pound the piss out of these young little speedy powderpuffs, then I just might fucking break down and cry. Their defense might put up a good fight right away but the Wolverines have too much fire power and veteran guys to not wear them down over the coarse of the game. The pounding will break them young guy's spirits. I've witnessed it too many times. Sprinkle in some Peppers on offense at half back, keep working the outside with the speed and power that the team has and things are going to open up. It's just nature man. It's really actually men against boys out there this year. Ohio being talented and high ranked recruits or not. Michigan just has too much age, strength and experience to not beat that defense. Same thing on the defensive side of the ball. The defensive line should have no problem having their way and the secondary should handle their business. This team has been doing this stuff for many years now in Ann Arbor and it's time to drop the god damn hammer.

Don't ignore the fact that Stribling played about 150 more snaps than everyone. The fact he's this close on completion percentage and yardage despite being targeted far more is really encouraging.

It makes some sense. Michigan has been very stingy with its CB snaps since Jeremy Clark got hurt, because the backups are mediocre (Brandon Watson, Keith Washington) or true freshmen (Lavert Hill, David Long). Meanwhile, OSU's backups are sophomore Denzel Ward (19 tackles, 8 PBUs this year) and redshirt freshman Damon Arnette (19 tackles, 1 INT).

Michigan's three main backups (Watson, Hill, Long) have notched 13 tackles, 1 PBU, and 1 FR combined. OSU just has more depth/talent than Michigan right now, which shouldn't be a surprise.

How does Stribling have 200 more snaps than Lewis? That's like 3 full games more snaps. Oh never mind, I forgot Lewis was out for a few games at the beginning of the year,
