Peter King of MMQB calls The Big House the best setting in all of college football

Submitted by Maizen on

"And it's not even close." Said it on the Dan Patrick Show the other day. Also raved about Ann Arbor and said he tried to get his daughters to go to Michigan. Said that the only place in the NFL that is comparable is Lambeau Field in Green Bay. Pretty neat to hear from an NFL reporter.

You would have really gotten a kick out of the stadium experience in the 1970s.  There almost aren't words to describe it and maybe that's good since those times and experiences are never coming back.

Is this not the most MGOBLOG meme ever?!  A nationally prominent sports writer calls our team's stadium the best place to see college football anywhere, "and it's not even close."  (Really?  I think touchdown Jesus, the Coliseum, or one of those intensity drenched SEC venues might have a word or two to say about that.  Not that they'd be right...)  And, here we are arguing about whether maize pom-poms are a good thing.  "You darn kids get off of my stadium!"

I respect your opinion but I am going to have to disagree. I don't want us to become Notre Dame fans and freak out about stuff like artificial turf, pom pons, permenant lighting. Sometimes you just need to update. Some recruits already think the stadium is a dead old atmosphere. Could you imagine if they saw it the way it used to be??

You need to modernize is my point.

Yeah...I really miss the days when I had to sit in silence because everyone yelled at you to sit down. Not. I'm finally starting to see that people get it and that they should be up and making noise when we're on defense.

Ha, Peter King is a league apologist, writes at a third grade level, tries to make himself the attraction (guess what beer I just tried you guys!), and sticks his foot in his mouth (Sean Taylor as a draft bust because he didn't produce enough in his career...really?!?). But just because he has flaws doesn't mean his reporting isn't good--or, in this case, his 100% factual and verifiable statement.

one of my favorite things growing up was the tall flags that a couple of fans would wave high above the crowd after michigan scored.  they were right near the top of the bowl in section 38-42ish.  one maize with blue M and one blue with maize M.  looked similar to below but much higher above the crowd.

Seven weeks a year I have the most amazing Saturdays!!!  Every week when I walk through that tunnel to my seats I feel great, excited and full of anticipation.  I love the hype of the crowd and if it takes pom poms or maize outs so be it.  I love what some fan bases to with striping their stadiums and pom poms.  It's a great football environment to bring my kids to.  There are times that I find our crowd too reserved.   I would also like to think that for 85 young men, it inspires them and that a 100,000 plus cheering fans might have played a part in their committment.   I am not alum, my wife is and she knows that I married her for her season tickets.

When I bring non football fan friends to the stadium (muggles) I tell them to enjoy the experience and they do.  I remember one game, walking through our tunnel and there was two 17-18 year old kids talking smack in front of us.  As they breached the tunnel, they stopped dead in their tracks and had their "Wow" moment and in that moment, I remembered mine.

Will be good to get back up there tomorrow and experience what King is talking about.  Live 4-5 hours away and always try to get up there 1-2 times a year but took a break last year after every Saturday seemed to be turning into a funeral experience watching the team.

Can't wait to hear "Band TAKE THE FIELD!"

Pro stadiums as well.  There are those that do compare as far as the campus, the stadium experience, the tradition...But walking around the campus, walking to the stadium, especially for a really big game (that we have not seen in these parts for a while, and not too much in the past 18 years, though any OSU MSU ND game somewhat qualifies), watching the players and band come out, the tension in the biggest stadium in the country...All those things combined make it very, very unique.  Students are from all over the midwest, the country, the world.  The best and the brightest coming together for the thing that binds them---their school represented by their football team.

Whether you are a student, alumnus, or a devoted fan, you really feel that in a way that cannot be felt anywhere else.

I have done this all my life, as my father's ground floor looks like WD's bedroom.  Instead of chairs in our recreation room, we had five rows of maize (not highligher yellow) and blue bleachers. It has been the one constant in my life through good times and bad, through victory and tragedy. One of my favorite earlier memories is "Touchdown, Timberlake" from none other than Ufer himself, another one of a kind.

Yost, Crisler, Canham, Bo, countless others, and now...Harbaugh.  WE are the standard. Nothing is over until we say it is! Meyer---dead man.  Dantonio---dead.

"Not even close"---I do not agree with that.  Too many other great places in the world of college football.  Leaders and best?  No question about it, Jim.

What I miss about the Big House from when I went as a child is the ringing of the car keys prior to a kickoff. Does anyone remember when that went away? Sounds like something little but I always remembered that.

Interesting. Compared to many campuses with decent sized stadiums it's fairly close. Assuming you have two working legs, you can get from pretty much anywhere on central campus to the game in like 15-25 mins, with enough room for plenty of activities in between. As Amutnal noted, you get the added benefit of the golf course on the other side. It's hard for me to imagine a better placement.

TV does it absolutely NO justice! I've had the pleasure as a father to take my sons and their minds were thoroughly blown. So much so, that my stepson who was a spartan fan at the time, converted on the spot. He's been a Wolverine fan ever since! The atmosphere is electric and it's crazy how big the stadium really is! TV does it NO justice! It's gonna be a blast in there tomorrow yellin at the top of my lungs!! GO BLUE!!!
