Penn State Game Time Announcement

Submitted by cbs650 on September 25th, 2022 at 11:45 AM

So I went to my first game at the Big House for the season opener but I couldn't bring my son. I have been eyeing the Penn State game as a game to bring him to as a birthday present but the game time has not been released. How far in advance are the game times known? I gather they are probably waiting on the networks as it could be a night game.

I can't edit but this is not a post saying a game time has been ANNOUNCED. I am seeking timeline of WHEN a TIME will be announced. Sorry for the confusion.

Since the Iowa start time was formally announced this past Monday, five days ahead, the Penn Sate announcement might not happen until the Monday after the Iowa game. The Indiana game is already set as a noon kick.

73, I believe you are accurate - and, that game times are announced on the Monday - approximately 12 days before a given game is played.

Very few games are announced prior to that - e,g. Michigan v OSU will be at noon. EDT.

We know the PSU game is a Maize Out - the odds are Penn State will be undefeated, and that’s about all, at this time.

Though, one thing I find interesting is.. the Michigan October home games - PSU and MSU.  If you could schedule those games, what would you choose?  My choice would be a night game Maize Out against PSU, and a late afternoon game (3:30 pm EDT kickoff) for MSU.  But, my opinion doesn’t influence network decisions.

It is my understanding that if it is going to be a night game, they would have to announce it during the 12-day window (Monday, October 3rd). If it is not announced by then, it will either be a noon or 3:30 kick.

There have been statements made by FOX Big Noon personalities that they were getting Michigan four weeks in a row, which if true, would mean the PSU game would be at noon.

Joel Klatt knows about as much regarding his future schedule as he does how to be an effective analyst.

The reason that the game times haven't been announced yet is that they haven't been decided.  Nobody at FOX Is sitting around thinking, "sure, we're already made up our mind, but let's screw over people trying to make travel plans."

You have it exactly correct.  The announcement will be Monday, October 3, unless one of the networks elects its six-day option, in which case it will be announced Sunday, October 9, and which would rule out a night game.

If by "contract obligations," you mean "we're guessing which games ESPN is going to pick," then sure.

For most games, the network assignments haven't been made.  The networks start by drafting weeks to go first; FOX gets the first pick and selects the week of The Game, for obvious reasons.  I suspect ESPN probably chose Week 1 next, in order to pick up Notre Dame @ OSU.  They could theoretically announce their first selections at any time -- which is how we get the Michigan / OSU game time in the summer.

Incidentally, Minnesota @ Illinois is already listed as an 11 AM CT kick for that day.  It's their homecoming; I wonder if schools get some say in scheduling homecoming weekend or something.

Anyway, if FOX has the first pick that weekend, it's either the aforementioned Minnesota @ Illinois game or PSU @ Michigan.  The rest of the slate is crap (Nebraska @ Purdue, Maryland @ Indiana, and Wisconsin @ MSU; OSU, Northwestern, Iowa, and Rutgers are all idle).  So, yeah, I guess it may be safe to infer a noon kick, especially with FOX having Game 4 of the NLCS that night.  They won't want to put Michigan / PSU in primetime on FS1 opposite that.

If ESPN has the first pick, then I'd expect it to be a night game, probably opposite Clemson / FSU.

So I used to think the same about the 12 day announcement, but last year the Indiana game on Nov 6 was announced as a 7:30pm kickoff on Sunday Oct 31st (I only remember because I woke up violently hungover the day after the MSU loss + a Halloween party and being very annoyed to wake up to a night game announcement)

If both teams are undefeated on 10/3, it will probably be a night game. I don't see what other game would be Michigan's 2nd night game. A Maize Out at the BIG HOUSE.

If MSU continues to shit the bad and take themselves clearly out of Big Ten East contention, does this change the current narrative that the Michigan - MSU game will be a night game?

Will the networks prefer to have a Michigan night game be against Penn State instead of MSU?

I hope so.  A maize-out night game is a competitive advantage for Michigan.  With all the focus and attention that Penn State gets for their white-out night games (rightfully so) there is a tendency to underrate Michigan's own maize-out night games.  Michigan maize-out night games are legit.

Does Michigan have any say at all about what games it wants to be their night games?

The UM admin are already asking ticket-holders of the PSU game for a "yellow-out."  Yellow-outs look better on TV when it's a night game.

I give the PSU game a 60% chance it's a night game.

Five likely top25 matchups that day

Michigan/Penn State

Utah/USC

Alabama/Tennessee  CBS 3:30

Clemson/FSU

Arkansas/BYU

FOX/ABC/ESPN have some tough time decisions to make.

Late to see this so OP might not see it …but, at Saturday’s game the Asst. Usher Supervisor told us portal leaders that PSU game time was noon. He had just come from the meeting run by the stadium operations manager. I would expect a public announcement soon.
