Pat Caputo from 97.1 says Beilein left UM because of Izzo surge

Submitted by lukepanici on February 27th, 2021 at 11:44 AM

I don’t understand the logic on this one. Caputo was adamant on air today stating his beliefs that Beilein left Michigan because of Izzo. Says MSU won three straight (which is true) and that the Spartans were accomplishing things that the wolverines no longer were. Claims Izzo was gaining so much momentum that Beilein knew he couldn’t compete with him anymore.

Am I alone in believing this is one of the worst takes possible?

The idiocy of many Spartan fans adds just a little more fuel to the fire for these upcoming games. Sorry for the rant.

Go Blue.

Their business model on UM sports is so obvious.  I tuned in on the weekend out of boredom and they had some truly bargain basement troll on the air trying to rile up M fans.  Enough called in I guess.  IDK, maybe some people just like the grabass of trash talk, but it's too bad we can't get decent car-radio analysis on any UM sports around here.  Last I checked on TKA they were still mainly sunshine-blowing.

This. With every radio host on any talk show, their “success” is based on callers.  Larger number of Callers makes the radio station seem more popular, which drives up advertising money.

So when listening to stations like 97.1, you have to take it with a grain of salt. Know that they have to throw in a few hot takes and have to rile up the local fan base to generate calls.

For guys like Caputo and Valenti, that means throwing shots at Michigan. For guys like Riger, they throw shots at Stafford and the Lions. People get pissed off and call in. They’re doing their jobs.

Is Caputo dumb enough to have a take like this? Sure. But he’s also smart enough to sell it the way he is to generate callers.

Ah yes. He left two years after making the NC game b/c Izzo beat him on the strength of some spectacular Winston performances. Beilein ONLY made the Sweet 16 that year. Clearly he saw the writing on the wall.

Once upon a time (like 20 years ago) Caputo hosted a morning show with Mark Wilson on DFN that was actually semi-entertaining. Since then Caputo, former beat writer and columnist for the legendary Oakland Press (legendary the length and breadth of Pontiac, Michigan), has become a caricature of the caricature of the caricature he initially became.

Obviously a dumb train of thought. Izzo has picked up his recruiting lately, but it hasn’t done much to widen any perceived gap. The only thing that was holding Beilein back recruiting wise was the perception of them playing a certain style of offense that made a lot of 5-stars think they couldn’t “shine” at UM, which I never thought made any damn sense. But overall in terms of team success, both programs are thought to be on even footing nationally at this point. I would argue they are the Top 2 basketball schools in the conference currently as far as program prestige/coach/etc...

dumb take.

I think Beilein got tired of watching kids leave early for the draft and having to start from scratch every year or two replacing key players personally...

Not only that, Beilein was actively interested in the NBA a year after being in the NC game.

Izzo didn't have anything to do this Beilein leaving

I always find it funny when people complain about Valenti, because he is far from the worst talking head in sports talk radio. The majority of them are closer to Caputo types.

I highly doubt it. No one team, rival or not, dictates so much sway over another program’s trajectory in college basketball. While it had an impact on the local recruiting, Beilein was still pulling in quality recruits and, largely, out-developing Izzo’s squads. I don’t see that changing. We dipped in his last year, but every team dips (see 20-21 MSU).

If I recall, it was rumored Beilein was flirting with the NBA for a couple years, and he finally bit. This wasn’t Saban leaving MSU for LSU supposedly for recruiting reasons, which at least is a more feasible explanation for football with so much quantity of recruiting, whether that was ever confirmed.

The Izzo angle is false. Beilein beat Izzo in previous years then came 2018-19 which Izzo's team won them all. The real truth behind Beilein leaving U of M was the 24/7 recruiting cycle. In the pros, he didn't have to recruit but that travel schedule required was a head scratcher to me. He also would have been afforded a real offseason in the pros which was what made him switch to the NBA. His age and energy required, per recruiting efforts, was a big factor for leaving Michigan as I heard it on local sports talk and on this message board in the past. I'll stand by that.

At least Beilein went out on a high note as he transformed the program into a winning culture and making NCAA runs was the norm.
