Partridge Did Not Get a Raise to go to Ole Miss
January 30th, 2020 at 12:21 PM ^
He took the Co-DC position at Ole Miss. It was a promotion from being a position coach at Michigan.
January 30th, 2020 at 12:22 PM ^
Seriously. Why is it so hard to think a guy might want to take a promotion?
January 30th, 2020 at 12:44 PM ^
At least on the face, if you leave a job for one that pays the same it says that your former employer was not going to offer you more (salary or titles)
While I’m not putting down partridge or Michigan, in the day and age of ever increasing coach salaries it seems at least a little curious
January 30th, 2020 at 1:08 PM ^
Or it says you left for reasons that have nothing to do with money, like a promotion or b/c you hated your boss or whatever. It's not that curious. He was given a job with more responsibility, or at least a bigger title, and he was likely being "overpaid" at Michigan based on his role.
January 30th, 2020 at 2:18 PM ^
Or it says you left for reasons that have nothing to do with money, like a promotion or b/c you hated your boss or whatever.
I think the op was implying that this could be one reason why he left for no increase in pay although he got a better title. Harbaugh’s inability develop a decent coaching tree and the number of his coaches that leave for lateral moves is at the very least, concerning....especially when you leave to work for Lane Kiffin, or I don’t know, your most hated rival..
January 30th, 2020 at 2:55 PM ^
No coaching tree? A bunch of former Harbaugh assistants have been head coaches.
January 30th, 2020 at 3:52 PM ^
Isn't Partridge now PART of that coaching tree? What am I missing? You gotta leave to do it, boss.
January 30th, 2020 at 5:43 PM ^
No coaching tree and lateral moves?
That is so dumb, I hardly know how to respond. Compare the number of Harbaugh's assistants that moved up to Carr's, RR's or Hoke's and it's no comparison. Probably combined all three and they're still behind.
What are these lateral moves you speak of? Most were pushed out by Harbaugh and replaced by better coaches. If Hoke had done the same, he'd have stayed longer. Washington left after one year to go to his alma mater and got a nice raise.
Partridge was offered a lateral position by Saban. He stayed. He is taking a job with a higher title and more responsibility than he could get at Michigan. That's how you move up and make more money.
January 30th, 2020 at 6:17 PM ^
Maybe he is positioning himself for head coach once Kiffen gets fired on the bus to the airport?
January 31st, 2020 at 11:28 AM ^
Seems more like he's positioning himself to come back to Michigan as DC in a couple years.
January 30th, 2020 at 3:03 PM ^
When you factor in cost of living, it was a significant raise. Ann Arbor/Michigan is waaaay more expensive than the poorest state in the country.
January 30th, 2020 at 3:06 PM ^
It’s definitely curious and your first sentence is exactly what I’m talking about. That there appears to be more of a reason than just a promotion is possible and, if true, a reason for people interested in Michigan football to be concerned about.
Nobody thinks our recruiting staff is in better shape for next year. It’s definitely a curious move. No pay increase in a profession that has notoriously increased salaries in recent years. If you read this blog at all it’s talked about at every opportunity.
I’m not bringing any new ideas. Looking back, Brian mentions almost this exact scenario:
Would Partridge take a job in which there's a solid possibility he's swept out with everyone else after three years for a minor-or-nonexistent bump in pay on the off chance Rutgers gets it together enough to springboard him into a head job somewhere? Maybe. Doesn't seem like that's the move.
January 30th, 2020 at 4:12 PM ^
Nobody thinks our recruiting staff is in better shape for next year.
That's fine. But there is more to winning football games than recruiting. Coaching for instance. I still don't understand people who think Partridge should have been promoted to DC. He has done absolutely zero to prove he knows anything except how to recruit.
Both new defensive coaches are clear upgrades in the coaching department to me. Maybe we can hold OSU under 50 next year.
January 30th, 2020 at 5:25 PM ^
Carpetbagger I agree with you 100%. I guess I’m just concerned, among other things, that:
1) We lost our best recruiter, maybe ever, to Lane Fucking Kiffen
2) It did not take any additional money for that to happen
January 30th, 2020 at 8:10 PM ^
Yeah but it's Ole Miss; they're not exactly minting money like 'Bama or Texas. They probably blew their wad on Kiffin's salary and don't have a ton of cash left over for assistant salaries.
January 30th, 2020 at 12:39 PM ^
Lane Kiffin offered to share some of those beautiful blonde Mississippi sophomores with him. The ones with daddy issues, etc.
January 30th, 2020 at 12:46 PM ^
Please give Lane my number!
January 30th, 2020 at 3:45 PM ^
Picture checks out.... not that there's anything wrong with that... until there is.
January 30th, 2020 at 2:15 PM ^
Yeah, lots of people change jobs for the same pay but an upgrade in position because the ceiling is much higher in the future. Why this surprised people here is the bigger shocker
January 30th, 2020 at 2:55 PM ^
Would have been weird to just make him Co-DC at Michigan if he was willing to accept the same pay? Urban would do that all the time at OSU to keep people.
January 30th, 2020 at 12:21 PM ^
Ver od.
January 30th, 2020 at 12:27 PM ^
His compensation at M was already pretty high, especially for a position coach. But it makes sense that he would take a substantial promotion up the ladder regardless of money.
January 30th, 2020 at 12:38 PM ^
I think he was just making fun of the OP's spelling.
January 30th, 2020 at 12:26 PM ^
Only one possible reasonable conclusion to draw from this - the program is in complete and total disarray and chaos is spreading like wildfire throughout the athletic department.
January 30th, 2020 at 12:32 PM ^
I think this is /s. But I can’t tell for sure given the state of the board these days.
January 30th, 2020 at 12:36 PM ^
The bag men got to him
January 30th, 2020 at 12:57 PM ^
probably should go ahead and shut this(football program) motherfucker down
January 30th, 2020 at 8:22 PM ^
We do need an Ohio State beating mother fucker dude. Thanks for reminding me.
January 30th, 2020 at 12:30 PM ^
Well, he won't be handcuffed on the recruiting trail at Ole Miss, that's for sure.
January 30th, 2020 at 12:41 PM ^
You don't know that... Some guys like to role play.
January 30th, 2020 at 12:47 PM ^
LOL!!!! Comment of the week, easily!
January 30th, 2020 at 7:57 PM ^
Role playing as the bag man? Count me in ;)
January 30th, 2020 at 12:32 PM ^
Is it possible that the co-coordinator label was added just to protect him from having to pay back 200% of his salary to Michigan per his Michigan contract?
January 30th, 2020 at 12:40 PM ^
It’s possible.
January 30th, 2020 at 1:59 PM ^
Dude, there’s no 200% pay back in his M contract. That’s in his Ole Miss contract AND is also only applicable if he leaves with the first 120 days of the contract.
So you’re not even close.
January 30th, 2020 at 2:54 PM ^
sir this is an INTERNET MESSAGE BOARD and we never let FACKS get in the way of our THEORYS!!1!
January 30th, 2020 at 12:34 PM ^
It's odd that a guy left for a promotion? Why?
January 30th, 2020 at 12:41 PM ^
Is it really a promotion? He's making the same money, and is working with DJ Durkin, under Lane Kiffin. I don't know. I'm not begrudging the guy for leaving, but he had a little better job security at UM than he does now.
January 30th, 2020 at 2:01 PM ^
Whether or not it's a good career move is a separate issue from whether or not it's a promotion. He's got a better title and more responsibilities under Kiffin, so yes it's a promotion.
January 30th, 2020 at 2:21 PM ^
Is it really a promotion?
Yes, going from a position coach to a Co-DC is a promotion. Is that really up for debate?
he had a little better job security at UM than he does now.
I said nothing about job security. You're bringing up an entirely separate issue.
6.5.0January 31st, 2020 at 3:11 AM ^
Job Security? What do you think that if Ole Miss burns that Patridge is going to be standing in the bread line? What is the worst that happens? Kiffin messes up, they broom the staff and then do you think Patridge will have trouble getting another positional coaching position at a Power 5 school with his recruiting resume?
January 30th, 2020 at 12:35 PM ^
Recruiting is his main thing, and Michigan makes it way harder to recruit elite talent than any other public school in the power 5. His departure makes total sense. When are we going to start using what we have built-up for well over a century? Schools with much less are offering much more and beating us. Time to be Champions again, be Leaders and Best again, and open up the damn vault.
January 30th, 2020 at 1:14 PM ^
False.... It is most definitely not "way harder to recruit elite talent" to UM's program than Cal, Virginia, Georgia Tech, etc. I get the academic requirements part of the argument, but other schools have those too without having the program/brand recognition of Michigan.
January 30th, 2020 at 12:40 PM ^
He wants to be a HC and likely needs to be a DC before he gets that opportunity. I'm guessing he didn't see the opportunity to be a DC coming soon enough at UM, which forced him to consider another opportunity that would get him to his goal sooner.
JH said good things about him on his departure and Partridge has not said anything bad about JH or UM on his exit. I'd say just wish the guy good luck, thank him for his service, and let it go. Maybe he'll be back in another role with more responsibility at some point down the road.
January 30th, 2020 at 12:42 PM ^
So you’re telling me he left merely for a promotion? Shocking.
January 30th, 2020 at 12:46 PM ^
People threw a huge fit when Gattis showed up as a first time play caller on offense and he was more experienced than Partridge. Chris would have never been given the DC job here without proving he was capable somewhere else first.
January 30th, 2020 at 4:17 PM ^
Gattis hasn't shown those fit throwers wrong yet either. Score in the second half against a real team and I might start believing.
January 30th, 2020 at 6:13 PM ^
omg
I'll bite. Who are the real teams?
