Or it says you left for reasons that have nothing to do with money, like a promotion or b/c you hated your boss or whatever.

I think the op was implying that this could be one reason why he left for no increase in pay although he got a better title.  Harbaugh’s inability develop a decent coaching tree and the number of his coaches that leave for lateral moves is at the very least, concerning....especially when you leave to work for Lane Kiffin, or I don’t know, your most hated rival..

No coaching tree and lateral moves?

That is so dumb, I hardly know how to respond. Compare the number of Harbaugh's assistants that moved up to Carr's, RR's or Hoke's and it's no comparison. Probably combined all three and they're still behind.

What are these lateral moves you speak of? Most were pushed out by Harbaugh and replaced by better coaches. If Hoke had done the same, he'd have stayed longer. Washington left after one year to go to his alma mater and got a nice raise.

Partridge was offered a lateral position by Saban. He stayed. He is taking a job with a higher title and more responsibility than he could get at Michigan. That's how you move up and make more money.

It’s definitely curious and your first sentence is exactly what I’m talking about. That there appears to be more of a reason than just a promotion is possible and, if true, a reason for people interested in Michigan football to be concerned about.

Nobody thinks our recruiting staff is in better shape for next year. It’s definitely a curious move. No pay increase in a profession that has notoriously increased salaries in recent years. If you read this blog at all it’s talked about at every opportunity.

I’m not bringing any new ideas. Looking back, Brian mentions almost this exact scenario:

Would Partridge take a job in which there's a solid possibility he's swept out with everyone else after three years for a minor-or-nonexistent bump in pay on the off chance Rutgers gets it together enough to springboard him into a head job somewhere? Maybe. Doesn't seem like that's the move.

That's fine. But there is more to winning football games than recruiting. Coaching for instance. I still don't understand people who think Partridge should have been promoted to DC. He has done absolutely zero to prove he knows anything except how to recruit.

Both new defensive coaches are clear upgrades in the coaching department to me. Maybe we can hold OSU under 50 next year.

Only one possible reasonable conclusion to draw from this - the program is in complete and total disarray and chaos is spreading like wildfire throughout the athletic department.

Is it possible that the co-coordinator label was added just to protect him from having to pay back 200% of his salary to Michigan per his Michigan contract?

Is it really a promotion?

Yes, going from a position coach to a Co-DC is a promotion.  Is that really up for debate?

he had a little better job security at UM than he does now.

I said nothing about job security.  You're bringing up an entirely separate issue.

Job Security? What do you think that if Ole Miss burns that Patridge is going to be standing in the bread line? What is the worst that happens? Kiffin messes up, they broom the staff and then do you think Patridge will have trouble getting another positional coaching position at a Power 5 school with his recruiting resume?

Recruiting is his main thing, and Michigan makes it way harder to recruit elite talent than any other public school in the power 5. His departure makes total sense. When are we going to start using what we have built-up for well over a century? Schools with much less are offering much more and beating us.  Time to be Champions again, be Leaders and Best again, and open up the damn vault.

He wants to be a HC and likely needs to be a DC before he gets that opportunity.  I'm guessing he didn't see the opportunity to be a DC coming soon enough at UM, which forced him to consider another opportunity that would get him to his goal sooner.

JH said good things about him on his departure and Partridge has not said anything bad about JH or UM on his exit.  I'd say just wish the guy good luck, thank him for his service, and let it go.  Maybe he'll be back in another role with more responsibility at some point down the road.

People threw a huge fit when Gattis showed up as a first time play caller on offense and he was more experienced than Partridge. Chris would have never been given the DC job here without proving he was capable somewhere else first.
