So what is the possibility that knowing Don Brown was not leaving in the next year or two or three, JH allowed CP to depart for some DC experience so he can bring him back as DC when DB retires? I'd like to think that is the case, however I acknowledge the wearing of my maize-colored glasses today.

Partridge's performance as an assistant coach was very promising, and his recruiting was excellent full stop.  But he was a high school coach 5 years or so ago, and had nowhere near the resume to be DC at Michigan.

Webb said that if he excelled in DC roles, a return to Michigan in that capacity was absolutely in the cards.

I never understand hand wringing over any coach or player leaving. This is the new reality of the college football transfer portal and has long been the reality of the coaching profession. Why can't we just focus and support those who call Michigan home, either as a player or coach?

I mean...he's getting promoted, which is good for his career. Sometimes you don't need to make more money to move on up. No way Michigan was going to make him a DC or co-DC anytime soon (nor should they). And he'll be in the heart of the most talent-rich region in the country. I get it.

Silver lining: maybe Partridge proves himself an excellent DC, and Michigan comes calling in 3-5 years needing a new, young DC. Not likely, but who knows.

Sounds like the 5th year firm handshake.

Edit:  That was a bit tongue in cheek.  But seriously, CP's 2017 vaunted recruiting class was a near complete bust.  New coaches look like a big upgrade.

Linebacker coaches don't become head coaches without first becoming a DC.  It's not always about immediate money.  Sometimes it's about a long term gain.
