"Paperwork" hurdle BS

Submitted by Preacher Mike on January 19th, 2021 at 11:29 AM

What's the deal with Worhy's "paperwork?" There is no way this is an issue of him forgetting to sign a form, or not including a form, or forgetting to fill out a section of a form. It's also not an issue of forms arriving late or some other technical problem.

If a kid is academically eligible, offered a scholarship, accepts the scholarship and signs the LOI, the school gets him into the classroom and gets his career started. The idea that this is a problem of some clerical error that can't be overcome is complete nonsense.

Why does no one explain what really is happening? Were there fake grades reported on the "paperwork?" Was there a discipline or off the field issue that wasn't properly reported on the "paperwork?" This BS euphemisms to try and shoe away scrutiny are ridiculous. No one with a functioning nervous system buys this lame explanation. What gives?

Not sure why everyone is still so angry at Schoop for not wanting to work face-to-face with 100s of students in a global pandemic. Sure I guess there's a chance it is unrelated to the pandemic. But considering there has never been a well known example or precedent for this sort of remote work in the history of CFB, it seems reasonable to read between the lines.

I am not angry, just do not know the history of it all. Did he ever make it to campus to coach? I don't recall hearing anything abnormal while I was paying attention throughout summer and prior to the MSU game. Seems like it would have been reported he wasn't coaching in person. Maybe I just missed it.

That's fair. Sorry if I assumed. There's been a lot of other tweets / posts flaming him though. It just is frustrating to me when this is being viewed as some sort of unacceptable indictment of the program when it's been commonplace in our own lives for almost a whole year.

What are the odds that the “paperwork” glitch is something that could lead to program going on probation if the AD and University turned a blind eye to it, and got caught later on? If it wouldn’t lead to NCAA probation, then he should be able to enroll early. I would venture that it would cause harm to the program, and any other program in the country, and the vagueness is a way for Xavier to right a wrong privately before the Fall (whether the wrong was intentional or not). Other programs might turn a blind eye, or claim that they wouldn’t make him jump through these hoops, and if he is frustrated with Michigan, he’ll roll the dice elsewhere. But, if he’ll need to fix whatever the wrong is before he plays a down, otherwise Michigan will blow the whistle. Whether the NCAA would actually care is a while different story.

I am guessing this is more of an issue with the way his high school does credits or something of that nature where UM was not accepting his completed workload as being enough to be considered a full high school allotment.

Worthy didn't mention a paperwork issue did he?  he just said he's not enrolling early, could be any of a number of reasons why.  To my knowledge the paperwork rumor was just a defense mechanism among certain fans and insiders.

So, if that's the case, you know what the easy PR approach is? Xavier Worthy has decided to wait until the fall semester to enroll, he will join the team in June with the rest of the 2021 class. We are very excited for him to join the UM football family next season.

Or

After reviewing Worthy's academic goals and readiness for the rigors of being a student as well as an athlete in this especially difficult learning environment during the pandemic, Worthy has decided to do some extra preparation and will join the program in the summer.

Sources at the program or the Athletic Department are giving out the uniform spin to reporters. Worthy or people in his circle are the only other possible sources. I doubt Worthy is telling reporters there is a paperwork issue. This has the hallmarks of an under the radar PR effort coming from professionals who know how to leak uniformly to certain news outlets and with the know how to circle wagons and keep a lid on any unwanted information coming out.

Hopefully he still comes. I know he wouldn’t be able to participate in Spring Practice, but could he still move to Ann Arbor and start working with the strength and conditioning staff, and do drills on his own with teammates like most do during the summer months after they graduate high school? And could he be on the sidelines for Spring Practice absorbing the new playbook? He wouldn’t get physical reps, but could get the mental reps in. I don’t see how this would violate and NCAA rules unless the University or booster was paying his room and board prior to officially enrolling.

That's not important.  What's important is that Preacher Mike will not be lied to in a way that's insulting--it must be a credible lie irrespective of any desire to respect a student's or family's privacy if possible and appropriate.

Losing your mind over the indignity of our very own athletic department not utilizing the correct messaging for the change in a student's early enrollment status in such a way that permits us to more/less broadly and baselessly speculate as to a new student's academic or personal standing is what's important.

As an aside, in case he's already an avid MGoBlog reader, welcome to Michigan, Mr. Worthy. We do have a few pricks here, but we otherwise hope you enjoy your stay.

My guess based on the belief that Worthy actually wants to attend UofM:

His grades are just fine.  He has met the specific core requirements of the NCAA.  He has not met the core curriculum reqirements of the University which are greatest in the Big Ten.

First-year applicants to the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts are highly recommended to have completed the following: four years English, three years mathematics, two years biological and physical sciences, three years history and/or social sciences, two years of the same foreign language.  PLUS: 5 academic courses.

The above is 100% the case. People arguing a paperwork issue are hilarious and have no concept of how athletes qualify or don’t. My guess is the football program once again screwed up on this and the Worthy camp is pissed.

You are going to see more of these issues with schools like Bates Prep popping up.

Very likely this exactly and given this Covid year who knows what his school has been doing back in California for Fall Semester.

My wife's grade has added 5 kids from out west this year, none of whom had spent a day physically in school since March. They are so far behind they've started pooling the new kids in one classroom so they can pull them for specials as a group.

Not all schools are keeping up. Best keep an eye on your kids progress too.

It's called confidentiality. People generally don't like to pay fines or go to jail just to satisfy some upset internet guy's curiosity about someone else's personal business.
