Overtime by John U. Bacon - New Book on Michigan Football

Submitted by Nervous Bird on August 6th, 2019 at 6:43 PM

It will be out September 3rd. As usual, it looks like a good read. Here's a link to an article about the book, and here's a quote from the article.

https://wolverineswire.usatoday.com/2019/08/06/overtime-john-bacon-book-review-michigan-football/?utm_source=smg&utm_medium=wasabi&utm_content=home-hero

Though the end of the season was a disappointment, with two consecutive blowout losses after building towards such promise, the end of the book has quite the opposite feel, thanks to Bacon’s deft hand. We come to realize that, four years into Jim Harbaugh’s tenure helming the team, we’re still at the beginning. Bacon’s assumed final entry on the Wolverines football program may be called Overtime, thus signaling a nearing end, but given the constraints in which Michigan and Harbaugh are limited, we come to understand why the program is, indeed, on the right track. When the Wolverines return to the top of the pyramid – and Bacon makes a compelling case through the vignettes why the team is trending in that direction – fans will appreciate how those in leadership, from Harbaugh to those now wearing a winged helmet, haven’t cut corners or sacrificed integrity like many others in the NCAA.

article ends with:  Harbaugh to those now wearing a winged helmet, haven’t cut corners or sacrificed integrity like many others in the NCAA.

waiting for our one ardent poster to assure us that, despite all other appearances (and this write-up), michigan is cheating!!!

very glad we are largely keeping above the SEC/ohio dirt fray.  will take that 100 times out of 100 despite some tough losses.

and lastly, i never want us to cheat, but if we are we sure as heck better be the 'leaders and best' at that, too.  don't give me any business about some other school having a bigger money cannon.

I take integrity 100/100 times, as well. Nothing infuriates me more than hearing posters on this board advocate for a Michigan 'bagman', and imploring our fine university to join the legion of cheaters. The scandal of the Steve Fisher era caused me to become basically a non-observer of the basketball program for nearly a decade. Winning is not everything... especially in college athletics!

I am proud that I am a grad of Michigan and that we have integrity. Harbaugh is a great representative of the University as are others associated with the the university. The academic and college athletic worlds would be much better if others would follow the standard we set.

You voted for Donald Trump.

You have black children and you voted for a white supremacist.

Every time I unfortunately read your posts it makes my skin crawl to be reminded someone from the 'Send her back' crowd has black children in their possession.

Stop fucking posting on a Michigan board asshole.

Rodriguesqe seems to come on mgoblog once a month to stalk extramelanin and harass him for voting for Trump. Very strange. It’s as if about half of the country didn’t agree with extramelanin.

Actually, 26 percent of eligible voters went for Trump. But Rodrioguesqe is crazy out of line. And it doesn't please me that the mods are out to lunch here. XMelanin is a good-natured and generous poster here and--like all of us--his vote and right to it are sacred.

"Possession"?

Hardly the word I'd use when referring to a family (especially XM and his family);  to a loving dad and the children he and his wife adopted and are raising (and rather well, in my eyes) as a part of their family.

Maybe instead it's you who needs a timeout from posting here.  Spend that time addressing your own anger issues rather than passing judgement on and insulting someone you obviously don't know.

Sheesh, man. I am as polar opposite XM politically as anyone on the board. When political threads get going, we get on each other's cases a good bit. But what happens in those threads stays in those threads. I like XM's contributions to this board and agree with him on virtually everything non-political. It's an angry time in the country, but this is somewhere you can go to step away from it unless that's what the thread is about.

That's not what this one is about.

This is an internet message forum.

If you can't let things go, you're going to have a stroke.

It’s amazing to me that somehow calling out people who vote for a man calling minorities “infestations and rats” is now labeled as being bigoted.

Like how fucked in the head are right wingers in this country?

It’s like you can shit on minorities all day but god forbid you call out people (particularly white people) or stereotype them back (for shooting up every public venue possible) for their nonsense all hell breaks loose among conservative circles. Welcome to being judged like the rest of us you golden spoon fed babies.

It's easy to say you'd take integrity and losses over shadiness and wins when that decision has been made for you to be the former. I have a strong feeling that if shadiness was the route Michigan took then damned near every fan would be celebrating the wins and making excuses for the shadiness just as so many other fanbases have done when their programs ran into some trouble.

you may be correct.  however, i am not the only one on this board who has an occupation that requires those choices on an individual basis and daily frequency.  i know my default position.  second, even accepting your cynical response i would nevertheless hope that michigan fans would end up near the top of the pile of the mythical 'given the choice what would you choose' fan poll.

I'm 100% on board with everything you said in that post, XM.

Someday soon the college football world might finally have its first clean championship team of the playoff era.  And when it does happen we'll be as proud of that as we will be of the Championship Trophy.

We should be paying recruits, no one is  harmed if a bag man drops off $10,000 for a 4* that Don Brown needs to play corner for example. We absolutely should never allow players to be above the law.

Do you think John U. Bacon would compromise journalistic integrity by proclaiming loudly that Michigan is running a clean program if he had evidence that it wasn't? In the intrest of his credibility, he would have stayed away from the subject altogether, instead of making a declaration that Michigan is clean.
