OT: WI supreme court strikes down governor's stay-at-home order

Posting this since MI (and most other states) have a similar dynamic playing out with respect to the conflict over state executive mandated lockdown/closures (to varying extents).

While there is a marked partisan political overtone to this (especially in WI and MI where Republican legislatures are fighting Democrat governors), nationally this is not an exclusive partisan issue (for example, OH Republican state legislature is fighting similar orders by the Republican governor).  It is a more fundamental issue of defining the powers of a state's executive vs legislative branches during times or crisis (as well as what constitutes a time of crisis and how long it can last).  This is getting into some uncharted waters since the nation is not at war, nor are the states under martial law - in a murky gray area that hasn't been much of an issue until late, especially at the state level.

I will not comment on whether the WI court's ruling was right or wrong (not sure there even is a "right" answer), but it is interesting to note that neither side in the case wanted to ruling to go into effect - a stay was requested by the plaintiffs in order to negotiate a compromise but the court refused.  I'm not a professional legal scholar or practitioner, but I think that this recent health crisis will further define (or redefine) aspects of governing at all levels for years to come - with this ruling being the first of many to come (and many likely to be conflicting).

Interesting times.

You're a MAGAt living in the 1800s. The US government is the largest enterprise this country will ever have at its disposal. All the advances of the past 60 years are in due to some intervention from the government. This goes from the data analytics revolution to fracking.

You're a coward who clings to some idea of govt that is not real. The govt will never go back to being some loose entity stringing a bunch of states along. It should be run by competent people regardless of party affiliation. That is not currently happening and it's a disaster waiting to happen in 10-15 years when shit will hit the fan and the US will be caught w/ its pants down thanks to more MAGAts like you.

Every once in a blue moon I log on here to see what some of the more radical sheep (in this case Mr. Cube's nonsensical ranting) are currently bah-ing about. I usually resist their temptation. But in this instance, considering the sheer vitriol this man (or woman) is spewing towards people raising some objectively salient points — I'll make an exception. You're a spineless insect with no semblance of critical thinking ability. You're a lemming. An order-taker. A piker. A loser. I truly pity anyone who has been forced to ever interact with you on a personal or professional level. Let's delve deeper — would you attribute the above to: A - Having a non-existent prefrontal cortex , B - Your never ending quest for romantic company that you don't have to pay for, C - Getting cut from the co-ed JV badminton team senior year, or D- All of the above?

Virtue signal me when you're awake so I know you're ok?

I'm a history buff living in the 2000s, but thanks for trying.  Government intervention in technological advancement is something to be lamented not cheered.  Not because government shouldn't help direct advancement, but because there's only the one direct source.  If history or basic logic suggests anything it's that more sources is better for everyone.

Bigotry is cowardice, and I'm happy to keep pointing out your fundamental character flaw as long as you keep bringing it up.  I believe in individuals, and government made up of them, not monolithic entities which constitute exactly the kind of blind zombie existence that brought us Louis XVI France or Imperial Rome (yes, I am deliberately calling the government you espouse as being on the "wrong side of history", because the comparisons are so fucking obvious it's absurd).  You believe in a government that has proven time and time again to fail simply because of it's myopia.  The ONLY solution is to get more ideas.  Give more power to the states and let them all try ideas, and learn from each other.  Hell, give more power to the counties, so that the states aren't overwhelmed by their urban centers.  Let rural counties learn from other rural counties, and urban centers learn from urban centers.

There are no single answers.  There are only more ideas.  Social progress cannot happen in echo chambers.  The sooner the left learns stops lying to itself, the better off we'll all be.  And yes!  that does mean that the right needs to listen to the left, because they have just as many good ideas as the right does.  Solutions are found in listening, not in partisanship.

I would say the rancorous stage was already underway before that, but the *response* to the 2000 election did not help.  Shortly after Ted Kennedy passed, Orin Hatch was telling stories about the days when they would argue and debate heatedly in the chambers, yet after hours go out together for a drink or a bite and talk family.  This is what is now missing from politics (yet was present since the founding days): cordiality and the understanding that politics is not and should not be personal.  It is sad to see how ingrained and divisive the factionalism has become (only time worse was likely in the days preceding the civil war).

Fuck you ihglrkg!  You are a Nazi communist liberal racist elitist snowflake rhino fascist!

Just kidding, I found the thread quite entertaining.  But I tend to suspect there is a correlation between the divide in this thread, even though we all share the love of the best Football team ever, and what is happening in America.  These threads are getting more divided and likewise, the divide in the country is accelerating.

I am not kidding when I say that if this divide continues to grow that there could actually be a civil war in our lifetime. You guys can call me crazy for saying that, I don't care anymore. People I work with were also calling me crazy in February when I pulled all my 401k out of the market due to some little flu in Wuhan China.  The world is not as stable as people think.  Never has been.

I still have an image seared in my brain of dudes with machine guns storming the Michigan capital.  I have an image of a dude driving a car through a protest against white nationalism.  I was horrified at what ANTIFA did in Portland.  Shit's getting worse.  The COVID is just a catalyst for the exothermic reaction that has been underway for years in this country.

After reading only the first page of this thread. I'm taking a hard pass on the rest.

One comment and one comment only to the extremists on both "sides" first, though:

When it comes to politics and the future of your country, please STAY AWAY FROM THE TINFOIL.

Think about it, please.

If RR was not hired, Mallett would have been the starting QB. Even if Threet still planned to transfer here he would have been our backup QB.
