OT - Vengeance
I randomly decided to watch the movie Vengeance ( https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/vengeance_2022 ) at the local theatre last night. If you're looking for a great new release, I can't recommend this movie enough. I went in knowing nothing about it and was blown away.
The movie was surprisingly really funny, which we don't get much of in movies nowadays. It was also serious when in needed to be.
Above all else I think the one of the two main messages of the movie (which I obviously won't spoil) was outstanding and is very much needed to be heard by a lot of people amidst our current social climate. I also think it took a lot of humility for B.J. Novak to convey such a message. I look forward to see what he does next.
I heard the same thing!
Honestly, I think BJ Novak is very overrated, but maybe he strikes gold again on this movie.
EDIT: when I say BJ Novak is overrated, I mean as an actor, not writer.
Even an overrated BJ > No BJ
Obligatory
That’s what she said.
No matter how old you are, this is funny. I am 58
I know BJ Novak wrote for the Office and he wrote the children's book "The Book With No Pictures." The Book With No Pictures was really clever. Given that every celebrity in the world writes a crappy children's book and his was good, I'd say he's pretty good. Trailer for this movie looks fun.
He wrote one of the best episodes of the office, diversity day, when he was 25 years old. He's not overrated
I updated my post. I meant as an actor, not writer
I tend to agree with your update. I love The Office, but he was one of the characters that could have been left off, and the show wouldn't have missed a beet, IMO.
(Beet, get it?)
Nice. I'm always asking friends/relatives for show recommendations. I'll check it out.
Not a show but if you like action movies, I recommend RRR. It is streaming on netflix right now. It is an Indian film set during the British Raj and the best way I can describe it is Apocalypto meets 300. Completely over the top.
Not streaming on Netflix but for sheer action-per-minute, also see The Raid, which is an Indonesian 2010ish action movie.
This is an awesome action flick. It’s on HBOMax.
It's a movie, not a show. If you want any recent (past five years) movie recommendations, name a genre and I'll send you what I thought was best. I go to the movies every week.
Just finished Season 1 of "The Old Man."
I'll throw that out as another recommendation.
I concur. I recently finished Hunters on Amazon and Archive 81 on Netflix and those were good as well. Need something new. It seems like every show I find that I like is one season
Counterpart and Outer Range were good too
I know this isn't exactly late breaking news, but if you haven't seen Severance yet, you gotta stop what you're doing and watch right now. It's dystopian near future sci-fi, really unsettling, and extremely well made. My favorite new show in years.
Severance is really good, as is The Bear!
I second The Bear and Outer Range.
I’m in. I know a quick google search will tell me, but where do I find Severance and The bear? Feel like I may have saw Bear on Netflix
Right now I’m watching the documentary on DB Cooper
The Bear is on Hulu.
And here I thought this was a thread about OSU or MSU.
I concur about the “Old Man” series. Good stuff. On Hulu and FX.
Jeff Bridges reportedly got very sick with both lymphoma cancer and Covid, and took a year off from filming during the first season. We almost lost The Dude…

Just watched the trailer and it looks interesting. Nice seeing Boyd Holbrook from Narcos.
The recent Reacher series was very good. The character was played just like he’s written. I’ve read all the books and they’re a fun escape. I didn’t take issue with Tom Cruise playing the film role many others did because I thought he captured the feel of the character…only at 5’9” 165# instead of 6’5” 250#. Haha
Agreed. I had no problem with Cruise in the role. I enjoyed the movies. That said, my home town was the setting for the first one and that probably influenced my opinion.
Just saw this film called The Godfather. It's really good. I don't want to give away too much, but it's not literally about a godfather. Maybe it's sort of literal. I don't know, whatever. Al Pacino was in it--he was in Devil's Advocate which is just okay. He overacts in that a little, while Keanu Reaves underacts a lot. Anyway, The Godfather has a great message for our time. It's about family and faith, and keeping your head up when life gives you lemons. Check it out!
The Godfather and The Godfather II were both very good. I hope they make a third one. There's literally no way anyone could screw it up.
My parents were going to visit Dallas, so I recommended a movie travelogue that I'd heard about, Debbie Does Dallas. I'm not sure if they ever took my advice, but they've generally avoided looking at me or talking to me since then. Must not have been a very good recommendation.
Aww I hope nothing bad happened to Debbie, did Dallas do something to her? Or did she do something to Dallas?
Truth - play Scategories with the most church going women in your life including your straight-laced boss's wife and find they regularly write Debbie Does Dallas for the triple score when asked for movies that begin with a D. a) that movie name didn't cross my mind, b) I wouldn't write it down if it did (maybe you have to be a boomer.)
Ironically, I think triple D happened in Debbie Does Dallas.
The Godfather has a great message for our time. It's about family and faith, and keeping your head up when life gives you lemons.
It's fine when life gives you lemons. But when life gives you oranges, really keep your head up.
Saw this movie last night. It is not going to win any Oscars, but I think it's a solid 3 out of 5. Possibly 3.5. The funny parts were very funny to me. Where the movie came up short is in the third act, when it sort of stops being funny and stars being real. Still, an enjoyable movie. There are way, way worse ways to spend a couple of hours.
