OT: Top TV shows all time
Stole this from the BCS thread below and want to hear more opinions. I separate dramas and comedies.
Dramas:
1. The Wire
1a. Breaking Bad
1b. The Sopranos
4. Game of Thrones
Honorable Mention: Better Call Saul, Sons of Anarchy, Dexter.
Comedies:
1. Seinfeld
2. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
3. Curb your enthusiasm
4. The Office.

Funniest BBC comedy I’ve seen is The Inbetweeners, a hilarious coming-of-age movie about an awkward group of teenage boys. Skip the movie; dull and boring.
August 11th, 2022 at 7:49 AM ^
Don't forget "Are You Being Served?" for British comedy and "Call the Midwife" for drama.
August 10th, 2022 at 11:47 AM ^
One I haven’t seen listed yet - Sports Night. Also full of rapid-fire dialog: Gilmore Girls.
August 10th, 2022 at 8:12 PM ^
Didn’t figure I would see Gilmore Girls on here but it was a fantastic show. Started to despise Rory towards the end but the show overall was witty.
August 10th, 2022 at 11:49 AM ^
Miami Vice, Law & Order (the original run), NYPD Blue, Sopranos, Queens Gambit (or Hill Street Blues)
‐--------
Cheers, Mash, Taxi, Barney Miller ("sign my name with dignity"), and Seinfeld (sometimes too weird due to "familiarity")
---------
Also want to mention the Bosch and Reacher series on Amazon
August 10th, 2022 at 12:16 PM ^
I just finished Bosch and its spin-off recently. Overall, a very solid series. Not sure it was a top 5 for me, but its close.
August 10th, 2022 at 12:30 PM ^
Agreed about the "close". I'm a huge fan of both book series. The screenplays and actors are faithful to the author's original vision. The shows probably benefiting, a bit, from "recency" for me.
August 10th, 2022 at 12:54 PM ^
Extra point for Barney Miller. Though it was a comedy, I've read it was one of the first—the first?—show to do cops realistically.
August 10th, 2022 at 1:11 PM ^
Detective arrests a kid holding more cash than the cop makes in a year. Kid asks the cop, "how much you make". Cop's reply? "Well, I can sign my name, with dignity". Books the kid. Yeah, like that ...
August 10th, 2022 at 11:51 AM ^
I think Breaking Bad, The Wire and Better Call Saul are all close for 1st. I loved Sopranos, but there were some really bad episodes whereas the other 3 shows didn't really have any except for maybe the "Fly" episode of BB.
To me, any list of comedies has to include All in the Family. Absolutely brilliant TV that highlighted the bigotry of the time and probably still relevant today. I still have Seinfeld and Curb up there though.
August 10th, 2022 at 11:56 AM ^
Never watched a single episode of any show you posted. Hell a lot of the shows people are listing I've never heard of. It's not unusual for my TV to stay off for weeks at a time. Just depends on if my out of market teams are on or not and then it kicks into high gear during football and basketball season.
August 10th, 2022 at 12:56 PM ^
I've always assumed TV was an addiction I couldn't kick. But, sick lately, I haven't turned it on in over a month, and don't miss it.
August 10th, 2022 at 1:06 PM ^
It used to be an addiction for me, until I decided to start working out again and reading.
August 10th, 2022 at 2:47 PM ^
Reading? Y'mean other than scrolling online?
I vaguely recall reading books and shit. Maybe I'll try that again.
August 10th, 2022 at 5:25 PM ^
Well I don't want to make it out like I'm reading the classics lol. It's mostly sports or music related (football x's and o's or biographies/memoirs) but I'll throw in a Tom Clancy or Stephen King here and there.
August 10th, 2022 at 11:01 PM ^
Elmore Leonard and Patrick O’Brian for me lately.
August 10th, 2022 at 12:01 PM ^
Drama - Firefly, Longmire, Broadchurch (Season 1&2), Dr. Who (all with David Tennant)
Comedy - Cheers, The Office, Psych, Last Man Standing, Corner Gas (all-time best Canadian show)
August 10th, 2022 at 2:13 PM ^
David Tennant is a great actor. Des was an excellent three-part miniseries if you haven't seen it.
August 10th, 2022 at 12:02 PM ^
Rocky and Bullwinkle, Naked City, The Defenders - There were other shows made before 1960, but at my age I can't remember them. However, you must include Justified in the more contemporary period.
August 10th, 2022 at 12:58 PM ^
Wasn't Rocky & Bullwinkle the first animated TV show silly for kids but woven through with adult humor?
August 11th, 2022 at 8:10 AM ^
In the biz that's called layering.
August 10th, 2022 at 3:06 PM ^
Thanks for retrieving Rocky & Bullwinkle from your memory. I think it was orginally called The Bullwinkle Show or The Rocky Show?
Rocket J., Bullwinke J., Snidely, Duddley, Sherman and Mr. Peabody, Boris & Natasha. Wossamat U?
Ah, the joys of youth.
Thanks again.
August 10th, 2022 at 6:49 PM ^
I loved Ricky and Bullwinkle. I was sooo trippy for a kid's show.
August 10th, 2022 at 8:59 PM ^
I assume "I was sooo trippy for a kid's show" was a typo, and you meant "IT was sooo trippy..."
Still, I like the intriguing possibility that YOU were sooo trippy for a kid's show.
August 11th, 2022 at 1:26 PM ^
Methinks most old guys from The Bronx are "interesting". ;-)
Typos, gotta love 'em.
August 10th, 2022 at 12:08 PM ^
great lists already mentioned (Friday Night Lights, The Wire, Succession, Lost), I'll add Parenthood as well.
August 10th, 2022 at 12:12 PM ^

August 10th, 2022 at 12:15 PM ^
Dramas

I started The Wire three separate times. Could never get past the start of the third season. I'm sure I'm missing out and there were parts of the second season that I liked, but that show was the slow burn of slow burns. I felt like I watched way too many episodes where I was just waiting for something to happen. Was not a bad show by any means, but I just couldn't get engaged with it. Neg away, friends.
Anywho, in no strict order:
1) Breaking Bad
2) The Sopranos
3) Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia
4) The Simpsons, Season 15 and prior.
5) Game of Thrones, season six and prior. Season 7 was entertaining but didn't carry the same oomph, and Season 8 was just a dud. A fart in the wind.
6) Boardwalk Empire - criminally underrated show that ended too soon. The show that allowed me to fall in love with Michael Stuhlbarg, loved his portrayal of Arnold Rothstein, he absolutely masters the art of quiet intimidation in every role he plays, and I'd love to one day see a spin-off with Meyer and Luciano.
7) Rescue Me - absolutely LOVED this show. Could hit so many notes between great comedic moments and absolutely heartbreaking tragedies. If you're a Denis Leary fan, HIGHLY recommend this.
8) The Office
August 10th, 2022 at 12:39 PM ^
I really don't get Breaking Bad. The beginning and end were good, but the middle with the super lab in the bottom of a laundry mat really lost it for me. If that existed, it would have been the most known secret out there. Everyone would have known there was a secret lab with 2 gringos always entering in a place full of employees.
Not the whole show, but the last Season of Stranger Things was one of the best season of any show I've ever watched.
August 10th, 2022 at 12:42 PM ^
Little mention of variety or sketch comedy shows on the list, so I'll add the category. While they might not have the ongoing story lines of others, they surely feature incredible talent, innovation, and writing (plus music).
1. Carol Burnett (Carol, Tim, Harvey, Vicky... c'mon now)
1a. Your Show of Shows (Sid, Imogene, Carl, Ed Hurlihy)
1b. Letterman
2. SNL (some iterations more than others)
3. Midnight Special
4. Kids in the Hall
5. Key and Peele
And I'd be remiss if I didn't at least mention Milton Berle.
August 10th, 2022 at 12:59 PM ^
Wow. Maybe the most non recency bias comment in these 100 comments.
August 10th, 2022 at 2:30 PM ^
Show of Shows ?!? So much talent all in one show. Wonderful.
August 10th, 2022 at 4:42 PM ^
No Mr. Show?? Booo!
August 11th, 2022 at 7:56 AM ^
Don't forget the "Dick Van Dyke Show" and the "Mary Tyler Moore Show".
Showing my age. By the way, get off my lawn!
August 10th, 2022 at 12:47 PM ^
Greatest sit-com ever: Seinfeld.
Greatest hour-long drama series: The Sopranos.
August 10th, 2022 at 12:52 PM ^
For comedy, I'll settle for anything with Bob Newhart in it (The Bob Newhart Show, Newhart...maybe not Bob) and any of the shows on which he was a guest star.
And one underrated comedy, which I loved, was News Radio. What a great cast.
August 10th, 2022 at 12:52 PM ^
HBO has been showing Game Of Thrones repeats by season in a lead up to their new Dragon series which I think pre-dates GOT. It's hard to understate how awesome GOT is and if you never binge watched the whole thing without waiting 8 months between seasons I highly recommend it.
I have recency bias so:
1a. GOT
1b. Sopranos
Sitcom
Office
Seinfeld
Cheers
Seen many other series mentioned but don't know if I've seen - The Shield. Any Shield fans? I was way into that show.
August 10th, 2022 at 12:57 PM ^
I am surprised to see so many Cheers mentions. Glad to see it.
August 10th, 2022 at 1:54 PM ^
Cheers had staying power. And their additions/replacements were fire. Woody was a perfect replacement for Coach and the same could be said for Rebecca/Diane. I can still binge watch that show.
Plus as a Pistons/Tigers fan, it took Cheers for me to like Kevin McHale and Wade Boggs.
August 10th, 2022 at 3:01 PM ^
The first five seasons of Game of Thrones were some of the best television ever created, but the cracks shown in season 6 became chasms in season 7 which exposed black holes in season 8 that displayed the downright idiocy of the writing team; which was clueless without Martin's source material to work from. I don't think the entirety of GoT can be included in a discussion of the greatest shows of all time since its legacy and reputation were thoroughly ruined by the final two seasons (especially the final season).
August 10th, 2022 at 6:02 PM ^
Game of thrones was my favorite show until season 7 and 8. 8 was so bad and that ending was just awful tv. It ended so poorly, I have no intention of watching this spin off.
August 10th, 2022 at 12:56 PM ^
LONGMIRE
No matter what
August 10th, 2022 at 12:57 PM ^
How has no one mentioned Coach yet, especially before the whole NFL storyline?
August 10th, 2022 at 4:51 PM ^
that show was so damn fun
August 10th, 2022 at 1:08 PM ^
Quantum Leap is one of my fave sci-fi nerd shows.
August 10th, 2022 at 2:05 PM ^
I just saw that they are coming out with a new Quantum Leap. I don't see how it could be anywhere near as good as the original.
August 10th, 2022 at 1:09 PM ^
The Andy Griffith Show, my favorite since I was a kid
August 10th, 2022 at 1:23 PM ^
Justified, Mad Men
August 10th, 2022 at 1:36 PM ^
First two seasons of Fargo were pretty great to me
