Submitted by TK on August 10th, 2022 at 10:46 AM

Stole this from the BCS thread below and want to hear more opinions. I separate dramas and comedies.

Dramas:

1. The Wire

1a. Breaking Bad

1b. The Sopranos

4. Game of Thrones

Honorable Mention: Better Call Saul, Sons of Anarchy, Dexter.

Comedies:

1. Seinfeld

2. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

3. Curb your enthusiasm

4. The Office.

Miami Vice,   Law & Order (the original run),   NYPD Blue,   Sopranos,   Queens Gambit (or Hill Street Blues)

‐--------

Cheers,   Mash,   Taxi,   Barney Miller ("sign my name with dignity"), and  Seinfeld (sometimes too weird due to "familiarity")

---------

Also want to mention the Bosch and Reacher series on Amazon

I think Breaking Bad, The Wire and Better Call Saul are all close for 1st. I loved Sopranos, but there were some really bad episodes whereas the other 3 shows didn't really have any except for maybe the "Fly" episode of BB.

To me, any list of comedies has to include All in the Family. Absolutely brilliant TV that highlighted the bigotry of the time and probably still relevant today. I still have Seinfeld and Curb up there though.

Never watched a single episode of any show you posted.  Hell a lot of the shows people are listing I've never heard of.  It's not unusual for my TV to stay off for weeks at a time.  Just depends on if my out of market teams are on or not and then it kicks into high gear during football and basketball season.

Drama - Firefly, Longmire, Broadchurch (Season 1&2), Dr. Who (all with David Tennant)

Comedy - Cheers, The Office, Psych, Last Man Standing, Corner Gas (all-time best Canadian show)

Rocky and Bullwinkle, Naked City, The Defenders - There were other shows made before 1960, but at my age I can't remember them.  However, you must include Justified in the more contemporary period.

I started The Wire three separate times. Could never get past the start of the third season. I'm sure I'm missing out and there were parts of the second season that I liked, but that show was the slow burn of slow burns. I felt like I watched way too many episodes where I was just waiting for something to happen. Was not a bad show by any means, but I just couldn't get engaged with it. Neg away, friends.

Anywho, in no strict order:

1) Breaking Bad

2) The Sopranos

3) Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia

4) The Simpsons, Season 15 and prior.

5) Game of Thrones, season six and prior. Season 7 was entertaining but didn't carry the same oomph, and Season 8 was just a dud. A fart in the wind.

6) Boardwalk Empire - criminally underrated show that ended too soon. The show that allowed me to fall in love with Michael Stuhlbarg, loved his portrayal of Arnold Rothstein, he absolutely masters the art of quiet intimidation in every role he plays, and I'd love to one day see a spin-off with Meyer and Luciano.

7) Rescue Me - absolutely LOVED this show. Could hit so many notes between great comedic moments and absolutely heartbreaking tragedies. If you're a Denis Leary fan, HIGHLY recommend this.

8) The Office

I really don't get Breaking Bad. The beginning and end were good, but the middle with the super lab in the bottom of a laundry mat really lost it for me. If that existed, it would have been the most known secret out there. Everyone would have known there was a secret lab with 2 gringos always entering in a place full of employees.

Not the whole show, but the last Season of Stranger Things was one of the best season of any show I've ever watched.

Little mention of variety or sketch comedy shows on the list, so I'll add the category.  While they might not have the ongoing story lines of others, they surely feature incredible talent, innovation, and writing (plus music).

1. Carol Burnett (Carol, Tim,  Harvey, Vicky... c'mon now)

1a. Your Show of Shows (Sid, Imogene, Carl, Ed Hurlihy)

1b. Letterman

2. SNL (some iterations more than others)

3. Midnight Special

4. Kids in the Hall

5. Key and Peele

And I'd be remiss if I didn't at least mention Milton Berle.

For comedy, I'll settle for anything with Bob Newhart in it (The Bob Newhart Show, Newhart...maybe not Bob) and any of the shows on which he was a guest star.

And one underrated comedy, which I loved, was News Radio. What a great cast.

HBO has been showing Game Of Thrones repeats by season in a lead up to their new Dragon series which I think pre-dates GOT.  It's hard to understate how awesome GOT is and if you never binge watched the whole thing without waiting 8 months between seasons I highly recommend it.

I have recency bias so:

1a. GOT

1b. Sopranos

Sitcom

Office

Seinfeld

Cheers

Seen many other series mentioned but don't know if I've seen - The Shield.  Any Shield fans?  I was way into that show.

The first five seasons of Game of Thrones were some of the best television ever created, but the cracks shown in season 6 became chasms in season 7 which exposed black holes in season 8 that displayed the downright idiocy of the writing team; which was clueless without Martin's source material to work from. I don't think the entirety of GoT can be included in a discussion of the greatest shows of all time since its legacy and reputation were thoroughly ruined by the final two seasons (especially the final season).
