OT: Thoughts on Who WMU's Next Coach Should Be

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

So it's official: P.J. Fleck is going to Minnesota. They're holding a press conference in Kalamazoo at noon.

I'm not sure if Western has a Lloyd Carr waiting in the wings to take over the program, but I'm speculating on who Western's next coach might be. I'd like to see Brady Hoke get a stab at it. (Although he's been rumored to be the next DL coach at Tennessee.)

Hoke was a failure as a Power 5 head coach and a failure as a Power 5 DC, but he was a success as a Group of 5 head coach. This job is made for him. He made $700,000 at Oregon, and Western was paying Fleck $800,000, so the money fits.

Any other thoughts as to what our friends in Kalamazoo should do?

Don't be surprised if Hoke gets a call. He's proven he can lead a MAC team to success. I think he needs an environment that is less pressure-filled than what he's been around the last few years. He does not seem like a guy who can handle the pressure of being a HC or a coordinator at a strong P5 school. Few can.

He's a Midwest guy, has Midwest values, and this gets him back to the state of Michigan. He'd be at a program that does not have unreasonable expectations and will give him time to build his program the way he envisions it.

After the unbeaten regular season Fleck just posted the expectations are far higher than ever before. When you factor in that Koke was once HC at the most storied football program in the universe the pressure to win big will be high. The better spot is not to follow Fleck but follow the guy who follows Fleck.

The big money boys in town had ponied up a pile of dough to keep Fleck here. Beauregard hinted that this money could still be on the table. But I don't think it would be for anybody but a big name, and I don't think Hoke is big enough. Might there be enough to lure the Hatter to Kalamazoo? He's already on record as saying his next job doesn't necessarily have to be at a Power 5 school.
